Finally got some good pics of the lights…

@revk Cor, look at all those colours! High altitude aurora, that. Beautiful.

One of my absolute favourite @stuart_cb illustrations today. The 1950's pinup style but with iPhone on the bed is just... chef's kiss. Sorry the blog post turned into something so weird.

@girlonthenet @stuart_cb "...and fuck like an SDS chisel."

Bloody hell. Spat my tea right out when I read that. Epic phrase. Superb, Ms. Net.

I am never going to look at my SDS chisel (*massive drill, but has chisel mode) the same way again.

I can’t help feeling that giving some of my grandkids a BBC micro, and cassette player, and the BASIC manual would help them learn so much. Sadly I’d have to lock them in a sealed room for a year as well, they would get so bored these days I bet. They just don’t appreciate quite how much happens behind the scenes on their gadgets. The layers and layers of code and hardware. Shame…

@srtcd424 @revk I like your comment about tinkering at a different level.

I'd buy my kids a Pi or an ESP development board in a second (they could use my spares..) but am cautious not to overdo it too soon. Temptation is to go "oh you like a 10 min Scratch/Logo session? Here's a Pi" and that's such a huge jump I think it would put them off, possibly for life.

I just continue to do cool stuff, and to ensure I demonstrate/explain to the kids if they ask what I'm up to.

@girlonthenet I first read this as some beautiful classic British sarcasm (in which case: heartfelt sympathies and solidarity :fistbump:)

But then I wondered if it's genuine, and you've been up since 4 having the sort of fun that makes for a good blog post one day..

Every time a friend comes round my place, they are forced to spend at least five minutes admiring my moquette. Not a euphemism.

@girlonthenet Nice, is that Jubilee line? I'm quite tempted by the LT Museum's shop, perhaps for some moquette socks.

I continue to LOVE @homeassistant - recently my house has been treated to a new LG TV, so naturally it needed some HA integration.. but how come I now need Wake on LAN? Read on..

I think I have finally solved a long standing network problem at my daughter's house.

So PSA...

Fucking Sky Boxes!

They have them on Ethernet, obviously, why not, but it pesters you to set up WiFi.

It seems a lot like some bridging then happens, creating broadcast storms with things like DHCP and ARP.

We tried the engineer mode turn off WiFI, but does not stay off.

Eventually created a NoWiFi SSID, set it to that, then zapped the SSID.

Arrrrg!

gilester45,
@gilester45@twit.social avatar

@revk Oh, interesting. So the Sky boxes bridge between themselves on WiFi which causes loops if you've got them wired?

I run mine on wired and try to keep the WiFi off, though I did notice a couple of Sky SSIDs have turned up recently so some boxes have obviously switched WiFi back on.

But I haven't noticed any loops or storms so far.

@revk Hi, I've got a Q about your Shellys: Tasmota is great, I use it on my various Sonoff relays. But I quite like the Shelly native OS, and the fact it implements overtemp protection (not impossible with Tasmota, granted, but at significant time/effort). It seems to work fine for me so I've not Tasmotaized my Shellys.

Why do you prefer Tasmota on your Shellys?

gilester45,
@gilester45@twit.social avatar

@revk Thanks, good point on the uniformity of one's estate.

This is a good opportunity for me to get around to looking into what Matter actually is, too.

@simonzerafa I have always had a fascination about disasters like this, specifically in understanding the failure of the controls involved. I often read inquiry reports in detail.

But Aberfan has always stood out as particularly awful.

Now I have children at primary school it cuts deeper still.

Shedding a quiet tear here for all those who died and those they left behind. ❤️

Thanks for the toot.

@simonzerafa 60 days until the annual Turning On of the household Christmas lights.. that's the more pressing deadline. I'd better get on that.

If you are tempted by a new iPhone but have a perfectly good existing iPhone, and really want something new, a new case or new wallpaper might do the trick.

I sometimes feel like I'm the only person who still wears a mask in busy / crowded / riskier places.

The other day, it was the train.

Today, it was the pharmacy - not a single person wearing a mask, even the person saying, rather loudly, that they think they've got covid.

Am I holding out for just too long?!

(Truth be told, I quite like wearing a mask in public. It's not something I want to give up.)

gilester45,
@gilester45@twit.social avatar

@neil I still wear FFP2 & secondary cloth mask on GWR and the tube. I prefer to reduce the likelihood of catching anything even a cold. On most commutes I see one or two others in masks. Out of the hundreds of people I pass.

I don't wear a mask in the office though, but that's less populous than public transport.

Oh. So, apparently, despite optimistically coming with the same connector, the polarity of LiPo batteries doesn't necessarily match that which the Adafruit Feather expects.
Ask the magic smoke how I found this out...

gilester45,
@gilester45@twit.social avatar

@revk I should know better, and should have checked. Ironically this is for an interface to some new smoke detectors! I don't usually bother with the LiPo battery on my ESPs but given the Feather has a built in charger it seemed sensible for the application. That'll learn me.

I do not know which of you frequent travelers needs to hear this, but I picked up one of those tiny 65w GaN chargers that fits in my pocket and it powers both my usb-c capable dell and hp enterprise laptops and is a massive life changer.

*even though the Dell states it needs higher wattage on paper

@gilester45@twit.social avatar

@hacks4pancakes Seconded! The first time I did a trip away with just a single charger for laptop+phone was oddly nerve wracking!
