he/him

You probably heard about me because I am the founder of the Twisted python networking engine open source project. But I’m also the author and maintainer of several other smaller projects, a writer and public speaker about software and the things software affects (i.e.: everything), and a productivity nerd due to my ADHD. I also post a lot about politics; I’d personally prefer to be apolitical but unfortunately the global rising tide of revanchist fascism is kind of dangerous to ignore.

PyCon is a magical experience, but maybe even more magical is multi-gig wired ethernet at home. Many things about the conference and the hotel were very thoughtfully put together but 0.3Mbps internet wasn't one of them

@danilo the phrase "sorkinese liberalism" is going to haunt my nightmares. now if you'll excuse me I am going to ineffectually mutter "expand the court" under my breath while I scroll through a list of explainer articles that expound at length about what it means that 5/9 justices are open supporters of the confederacy, including, inexplicably, the only Black one

Logging in to take a look at some talks on the online platform for #PyConUS, even though I'm done with the conference now, I just noticed that the attendee dashboard has a section for "sponsor badge scans", giving transparency over which sponsors got my contact details. That is a really nice touch, thank you @ThePSF .

Hi folks! Former chair of @ThePSF Conduct Working Group with a message that might be timely!

If you see a member of the #python community behaving against the spirit or the letter of the CoC, especially if the comments are in public about an official #PSF event, especially if using a hashtag, please report to conduct-wg@python.org as you are comfortable.

The WG might not be able to take action due to the CoC’s scope, but its useful background for the inevitable next incident.

Thanks! ✨

As I learned from Dan Olson’s excellent “This Is Financial Advice”, a defining feature of the conspiracy theorist mindset is the firm conviction that the elements of the conspiracy are so persuasive and self-evident that not only does the theorist become themselves overconfident, but also becomes overconfident that everyone, all the real people and not the hired cutouts of the conspiracy, already agree with them. They strongly believe their view is consensus.

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

Because their reasoning is heavily influenced by social proof (most people value social proof more than they realize, and that includes both me and you, dear reader) if you try too hard to convince them they are wrong on the facts, they will only begin to regard you as a part of the conspiracy, which destroys your own credibility with them. It is always more helpful to find ways to remind them, as gently as possible, that a majority of the people they actually respect don’t share their views.

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

Obviously if you’ve been watching my feed today I am subtooting one particular guy with notably poor scientific literacy and rhetorical skills but unfortunately this is regularly useful advice these days. Your chances of success are always low and shooting for social proof only helps a little bit, pulling some numbers out of my butt I’d estimate it increases your odds of convincing somebody to chill out from like 5% to 10%. I wasn’t successful in my effort. But it’s still worth remembering.

The vlogger says "subscribe so you don't miss it!". At that exact moment, assuming you are not full screen, a little rainbow shimmer runs over the "Subscribe" button under the video.

…did the vlogger set a flag somewhere, or is Google doing speech rec to look for the word "subscribe" in videos and triggering a CSS effect when it finds it? Does this happen in all videos now?

glyph,

@mcc the latter. It’s in all videos.

Hey, um, #Python folks? You might want to come collect the COVID denialism happening right now, claiming authority on the basis of a PSF fellowship.

(Thank you for those of you who have already done so.)

(edited for clarity and correctness)

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade no, they are life-long (I am also a fellow, and I am pretty sure I predate him) but let’s see how far we escalate into CoC territory here. Just saying masks are unnecessary is obviously not a violation but I suspect he may not be able to help himself based on his tone. Hopefully he will calm down and think better of this particular tirade.

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@xgranade I really do think that some mask critics are unfairly maligned and do have points that need listening to and addressing and not just shouting down all the time. Even just “masks are dumb” folks’ ignorance is understandable, when the public messaging from officials is so badly mangled and scicomm is struggling (and mostly failing) to fill the gap.

But uh maybe not “unfairly” in this case. Again, hope springs eternal, I hope we can de-escalate to our inside voices.

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@SnoopJ @xgranade the problem is that the people who actually care about not looking like they don’t care if immunocompromised people die, feel silenced by community norms and don’t want to speak up, almost as much for the “friends” they will make as a result as for the opprobrium they will receive from the rest of the community. That’s why you don’t hear the good faith version of this. (Which is exactly why I keep highlighting it: I want to reform the norm that we yell at every mask critic)

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@SnoopJ @xgranade sorry for that backflip of a double negative, hope I landed it grammatically

Hilarious. Some random ass paid-for blue tick on X said Microsoft were looking to buy Valve, and loads of people fell for it. News articles even got written on it today.

Totally false, it’s news from a leak that was from 2023 (that i wrote about back then https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2023/09/microsoft-keep-your-filthy-hands-off-valve/) and is not a thing that’s happening.

This is the problem with paid “verification”, people see the blue tick and think they’re trustworthy.

glyph,
@glyph@mastodon.social avatar

@ThePlant totally fell for it over here too. Should have done more fact-checking on my own of course, but in defense of everybody who did fall for this (myself included) it's exactly the kind of absolutely horrible thing that is happening with regularity across the entire industry, all the time, so it doesn't seem implausible enough to take a second look at. (thank you for writing about this)
