DPLL has a "Pure literal elimination" phase that makes it a good sat solver. If a literal exists only in a single polarity in your formular, you can just assign it that value.

This does not work for dependency solvers however. To translate this to a dependency solver:

It would install every package that has no conflicts

Anyway thinking about literals and CNF formular is much harder than thinking about the whole thing in terms of dependencies.

@juliank in the context of apt you have to admit that would be pretty funny

Hello Toronto - I'm giving a public talk there in 8 days. Want to hear me yell about satellites for an hour? Come say hi!

EDITED to add: Oops I didn't give image credit! The image in the poster was taken by Joshua Rozells, see APOD link: https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap220614.html

@sundogplanets oh hey, that's like 18 minutes from my front door! Right, see you there. Want me to bring you anything? Fisherman's Friend, air horn, pastries?

Blurgh, in the last 25-30 minutes the back of my throat has developed that worrying little ache that usually precedes a cold or a flu. Haven't felt that in a long time, at least a couple of years. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but I'm skipping Katie's and my dance lesson tonight. :-\ Means missing something I was looking forward to, but better to not take risks with other folks's health. (I hope it's not actually an illness coming on but rather, like, a bad pollen day or something.)

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@ottaross thank you, me too. Took a couple of snootfuls of Betadine, now I'm just crossing my fingers and keeping my distance from humans. Probably use a rapid antigen test later tonight just in case. 🤞😬🤞 🚫🦠

Cars parking in the bike lane radicalized me 13 years ago, and these days my willingness to "just go around" has hit rock bottom. It feels more important than ever to make it safe for ALL of us to walk and bike.

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@WTL @mbonsma for dealing with exactly the issue of motorists not hearing my bell, I have been using a bike light with a momentary-maximum button on the handlebar. (A Fenix BC30 light.) It's less useful for signaling to pedestrians or fellow cyclists - my bell works better with them - but for motorists the high-beam flash works very well.

(And there are other options further up the scale of force if you're feeling aggressive, https://mastodon.social/@gnomon/111230137100068919 )

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis @WTL @mbonsma I can only imagine that they measured the beam angle by standing the bike up on a trail, triggering the boost button, then checking which trees had all their leaves burned off

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@WTL @johnefrancis @mbonsma there are indeed, and they are shockingly less expensive than you might expect

https://www.sanwulasers.com/category/striker

(You can also find "laser 303" / "JBL4107" lasers with similar power output levels for about 1/10 the price of the Sanwus, but what you're trading off isn't total power output, it's quality control of the specific spectrum range produced by the emitter. That matters because it's how you buy the goggles that ensure you burn only paint and not your retinas)

gnomon,
@gnomon@mastodon.social avatar

@johnefrancis I have been advised to express my sincere belief that these devices are generally safe as advertised and that any information to the contrary would come as a great surprise.

@geerlingguy how would you feel about running a performance and perf/price comparison between the Geekworm X1011, the CM3588, and something like the i3-N305 CWWK fanless boxes with one of their 4× NVMe breakout widgets¹ that Patrick over at STH reviewed last year²? They're bring-your-own-RAM but also mighty keen...

(I know you have one of those neato little Minisforum machines, but I don't know of a 1→4 NVMe breakout board for those.)

Keeping a little brief log of bicycle maintenance activities with automatically added timestamps has turned out to be a really useful little tool now that I have a few years of data in it.

I started it in 2017 as a project tracker for my ridiculous frankenBrompton. Now I can predict with decent accuracy when I'll need wear part replacements like new chains, brake pads, tire reinflations, battery recharges, a new helmet... super useful!

And NO ADS

@juliank drink cappuccinos and feel guilty, but awake

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

And here's the thread for "year three":

If you do end up going down the path of discovering how davmail¹ works, I'm at your service if you run into snags. (I hope you don't have to, and that a smoother solution exists in your situation!)

Some kind of heavy hydraulic machinery starting howling literally right outside my office window at 9:01 sharp, about 55 minutes ago, and I cannot hear a n y t h i n g. Going to be a challenging day for concentration I think.

Uhhhhh rumour has it that the fire service is here and at least one person was evacuated from our building..? Today could be getting unpleasantly exciting.

Currently trying to figure out if I should be evacuating too

I am not entirely positive I'll be able to work my way through two hours of synth soundtrack like this.

(The people being renewed during this carousel sequence are going to the Heaviside layers like in Cats (2019), right?)
