It is astonishing how productive I can be on an ICE train.

A small linguistic observation - I was initially confused by the Polish signage for both 'platform' and 'track' numbers.
Most platforms have 2 tracks !

The British don't distinguish between the two, the Dutch consistently use 'spoor' which is a track - but never talk about platforms.

What can I expect in Italy / Switzerland next week?

(I'm trying to recall what the French do)

@steely_glint I remember the times when we had the platform+track combination in Austria as well but that's long ago.
From my memories of Swiss and Italian stations, I think I've also seen only tracks there in the last many years.

There's a big Austrian news paper called "derStandard". Every time they write an article about a developer or programmer, they headline "us" with "Hobby-programmer" or "Hobby-developer".

So I wrote a Chrome Extension that adds "Hobby-" to other job titles on their page as well.

e-mail is a failed federated service. anyone can become a provider, but only a handful can even dream about actually delivering a message to an inbox hosted by Microsoft, a major provider used by lots of entire companies.

  • email is still the perfect example for federation on a theoretical level, looking at the RFCs (821, 822) from the early 1980s
  • in practice it gets a bit messy, as companies like google and microsoft put up more and more hoops to jump through, but for the mailservers I run I still can say that I can communicate with accounts on all kinds of servers/operating systems/clients/โ€ฆ

Struggling today

I feel like any solutions I have to Europeโ€™s railway problems are not seen or understood by anyone with any decision making power, and these people would sooner stay in their self contented bubbles instead

And Bluesky booming also leaves me cold - as there too weโ€™re repeating errors of the past, not learning or correcting. And that worries me

All this research about (lack of) availability of cross border rail tickets makes me annoyed

DB Navigator is an excellent route planner

Imagine adding easy booking - even for trains outside Germany! - to that. It'd be amazing

But DB being paranoid about Flix, ร–BB paranoid about Westbahn, SNCF paranoid about everyone... means no state owned railway will make a transformative, EU-wide app

The only players that can and will are hence going to be private
