If you don't mind specifying, I'd love to know what region of the world you're from!

@ju @thibaultamartin I was also donating quite a lot to GiveWell, I was attracted to them trying to do the most good for the money. Then I started reading about Effective Altruism and how it is aligned with the Tech Bros AI human extinction narrative, and misogyny inside the EA movement - and I quickly noped out of giving to them any longer.

We realized we need to get a new car, as our 2001 car is on its last legs. I realize I've never actually bought a car, always just got hand-me-downs, so I don't know how to reason about such a large purchase. We're thinking PHEV (plugin hybrid), and we're a family that mostly takes very short trips. Any rec's?

@pamelafox Ford Escape PHEV, or if AWD is important to you and you want to pay a bit more, a Toyota RAV4 Prime.

Anyone out there drive an Ioniq 5? I’m looking at it for my next car and need to gather opinions both good and bad. If you have thoughts you wanna share please let me know. Thx!

danyeaw,
@danyeaw@fosstodon.org avatar

@gedeonm Mach-E has better acceleration, interior features, cargo space, Blue Cruise, and less dorky looks. Ioniq has faster recharge time and a smoother ride. I think the prices are pretty similar with the Mach-E price drop this week, but you could also get 0 APR.

Shots fired by the flake8 maintainer.

We can have a nuanced discussion about the failures of flake8 etc, but you’ll still have to acknowledge that a VC-backed, non-Python project profited from decades of community work, & has sucked all air out of the space.

It’s not like I’m not using Ruff—but I do it begrudgingly & find the cheerleading around it baffling. It has practically destroyed a part of the ecosystem & it looks like nobody has seen the VC playbook play out.

@hynek Although I am deeply grateful for his contributions to so many key Python projects, the fact that I don't have to deal with Anthony in the issue tracker or if I want to make a contribution is one of the top things that encouraged me to switch many of my projects to Ruff.

Riot Games just laid off 530 employees today, but to their credit, their severance pay is incredibly generous: 6 months pay for everyone, including health benefits, plus an extra 100% of their last bonus, and workers can still vest some RSUs for the next 12 months. They let employees keep a laptop for good, and let them retain access to email until they have to leave. They will provide immigration support for workers on visa.

suck, and there seems to have been a ton of them in the tech industry this past year or two, but this is as good a way to do it as I’ve ever seen. This must cost Riot a fortune to execute. Good on them for actually caring about what happens to their workers after their last workday.

@drahardja It looks like Riot employees deserve a tech union. We shouldn't celebrate a severance package and getting informed by email that you got laid off.

Folks, I hope you are all prepared for an incredible because it is going to be great. I’m so stoked. I hope we can do Denver justice in just the few days most people will be here, but I think between the talks, location, and social events, we will do pretty well. 😁

Submit a talk and plan your trip over at https://guadec.org 👀

@cassidy @nekohayo At least from Michigan I could do a Wolverine to California Zephyr combo, would be about 26 hours vs. the 3 hour flight (plus another 3 for check-in, travel, and security time). It would have about 5 times lower emissions taking the train though and might be kind of fun.

Given how Pydantic 2 broke compatibility with Pydantic 1 in a way that's still shaking out - you can't use 2 in a project that has dependencies that use 1 without making changes to those dependencies...

... I wonder what the downsides of releasing Pydantic 2 as a new package called "pydantic2" such that it could be installed in the same namespace as the original pedantic would have been?

Presumably this is how Jinja ended up as "jinja2" forever?

Going through my notes on There Are No Accidents by Jessie Singer (@JessieSinger), and I figured I'd share them here as I process them.

This is a book about how our systemic decisions make America a dangerous place to live. It really made clear to me that Covid is nothing new. We've always been needlessly cavalier with each other's lives - especially the lives of the poorest and most marginalized among us.

You can get the book here: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/There-Are-No-Accidents/Jessie-Singer/9781982129682

danyeaw,
@danyeaw@fosstodon.org avatar

@rst @shauna Do you have a source for that? My understanding is that the engines had to be moved so far forward on the wings to clear the ground that it created another aerodynamic surface during nose up conditions. This could cause the aircraft to get into an unstable stall condition with a high angle of attack. This is why they had to add MCAS. It wasn't for marketing, Boeing wanted the aircraft to be treated just like any other 737 with better fuel economy, that's what airlines wanted.
