@gruber “In hindsight, this was a mistake on my part. Everything is simpler if you only have one Apple ID that you use for both iCloud and iTunes/App Store purchases”—NO. In hindsight, Apple should have, somewhere in the last 10 years, offered a consolidation option. I and so many people I know have split accounts for historical reasons…and the fragile rigidity of the Apple ID and purchasing system and records.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf @gruber Yep. Bothers me to have two accounts for no dang reason that I can't combine.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf @gruber Relatedly, I think about all the old internet infrastructure that's essentially incapable of sustaining the massive amount of data each individual now accrues every day of every year, and I grieve for all the emails and photographs and videos that are lost every second as people upgrade or lose devices and can't figure out how the hell to recover or archive their memories.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf @gruber I mean, I guess it's not much different from folks chucking boxes and boxes of old papers and letters and photos when people die. Entire family histories, generations of records just tossed in the dumpster, every day, thousands of times around the country. But it's sad in the digital age when it should be so much more easy to archive and maintain.

I meant to be finishing a post about books I'm reading but I got distracted and wrote ~2500 words about Mastodon and Bluesky and the related things (welcoming design, insular culture) I've been stewing on for a few months

And also about vegetarian meat substitutes in the 1980s, which were really something

@stevelieber @kissane It's interesting because my onboarding experience with Mastodon -- back in 2017! -- was pretty smooth, and when I really started using it more than any other social network this year, the Elk and Ivory interfaces made it feel pretty great. But at the same time, this year I've really become aware of how tedious it can be to do something as simple as to follow people.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

@stevelieber @kissane I still prefer Mastodon over every other alternative. But it's painful how many folks I'd LOVE to see on here who have been turned off by the interface friction.

In the gym at the High School of Art & Design for Fan Faire NYC! Come see, come see! https://www.fanfairenyc.com/

Had a fantastic first day at FanFaire NYC. My first con since the pandemic began. Great to see readers, say hi to old friends, chat with colleagues, sign books. Big thanks to everyone who came by the table! I'll be back tomorrow!

Day Two of Fan Faire NYC begins now! I'm doing a panel with Free Van Lente and Ryan Dunlavey about making comics at 11:30 - otherwise here in Artists Alley all day! Come see, come see! fanfairenyc.com

Interesting anecdotal data point: during the course of this con, maybe a half dozen people asked me if I was on Instagram. No one asked me about Twitter or any other social media site.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

Continue to be fascinated by this. Yes, just anecdotal stuff here. But I'm beginning to strongly suspect that the biggest beneficiary from Twitter's downfall will be Instagram.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

Instagram winning the post-Twitter hunger games would be bad. It's a walled garden that purposefully disables outbound links. Terrible for independent creators and grassroots organizing. So I'm rooting like hell for Mastodon and any other non-horrible viable alternative. But I'm gonna get a little more serious about maintaining/nurturing my Instagram account.

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

Also Instagram isn't text-friendly, and I'm a writer and work best with text-friendly social media. Yes, I write comics and presumably have lots of images I could post, but for fast, in-the-moment posting? Text, baby.

Wondering how it would be received if I made a big square graphic that just read "TEXT POST" in Impact and used it for the image whenever I wanted to just post text on Instagram.

I will never criticize anyone for worrying about follower counts on social media because I live in the United States where a few thousand more followers might be the only thing that saves you when you launch your seemingly inevitable medical emergency GoFundMe.

Hey, old internet friend @caseymckinnon is here! We bonded back in the day when we were investing lots of time in Google+ (sob). She's an actor and producer and a good follow on the interwebs.

Moved to tears by "Let My Testimony Sit Next to Yours," a Larry W. Cook installation at the Brooklyn Museum. In the case are letters telling stories of three generations of absent fathers, the first from Cook's great grandfather, which includes the line "After I hit that white man I knew it was no longer safe for me" and "I pray that Lord forgives me for leaving you such a burden"...

gregpak,
@gregpak@mastodon.social avatar

The last letter is from Cook's father to his father, and includes the lines "In many ways, I'm the same kid waiting for you. I needed you then, and I need you now." and "I forgive you and I love you, Pops." I'm tearing up even as I type this. Incredibly strong piece. Go see it if you're in NYC. It's part of the "A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration" exhibit.

If you make art about failure and forgiveness in a deeply flawed world, it will make me cry like a baby.
