think of a package that you know is technologically similar to what you want to package
search in https://github.com/nixos/nixpkgs for that package. entry point is /pkgs/top-level/all.nix, from there you get the path to your desired package
read the default.nix of that package
copy that one and start adapting it to build your source
build the package by being in your nixpkgs checkout and issuing $ nix-env -f . -iA $yourpackagename

@isotopp für die betroffenen tut es mir leid, aber im allgemeinen finde ich grossartig, was das gerade passiert. man predigt den leuten jahrelang erfolglos, dass es eine schlechte idee ist, die eigene datenhaltung auf anderer leute computer aufzubauen. im endeffekt sind die konsequenzen aber immer so abstrakt und theoretisch, dass man die leute verständlicherweise nicht erreicht. das hier ist richtig schoen greifbar.

@paddi@xr18b you are formally right. yes. there is no such thing as a real wildcard in regex. "." in regex is "one arbitrary character". you can expand using * or + to "zero or more arbitrary characters" or "one or more arbitrary characters" respectively. as such , * takes the role of a quantifier rather than a wildcard. the * in filename expansion is not a regex in the mathematical sense. as it is not mighty enough to parse a regular language.
