„With CarPlay increasing its hooks into the systems of vehicles“: Can someone explain what precisely they are referring to? https://appleinsider.com/articles/24/05/01/gms-carplay-replacement-doesnt-work-well-and-has-a-long-road-ahead-of-it

hagedose68,

@below The next generation of CarPlay is intended to integrate more deeply into a car's systems.

Tomorrow is my birthday. What kind of dinner should we go out for?

(Other than Korean or sushi since I just had those the other day)

Anybody have suggestions?

@Chris I love Thai

I'm trying to decide if I should update my avatar on here. I feel like "guy with sunglasses and a baseball cap" can maybe come off a certain way if I pop into someone's replies.

I had a pretty nice headshot taken at a recent work event. Too serious/boring?

@Chris I think changing it is a good idea, but I prefer the composition of the current one. Why don't you take a new selfie without the glasses and the cap?

Here's a "fun" thing I discovered: iCloud mail (me.com) can be forwarded to Gmail.

But it won't work now because Apple doesn't adjust the headers so our domain (iconfactory.com) looks like it comes from Apple's IP (17...*) and fails Gmail's SPF/DKIM checks.

If you're forwarding an iCloud email to Gmail, you're going to find this out the hard way.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@chockenberry I'm "Postmaster" for a large university, and that's just how email works these days. Forwarding is inherently unreliable. I wouldn't blame iCloud for that.

I'm starting to look at electric vehicles and seeing ~100 MPGe on quite a few. That's kind of shocking considering you can get like 70 MPG on a Prius these days.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris I don't drive a car regularly (I actually live in a car-free neighborhood and I am not allowed to own a car), so I don't know how they compare, but I recently drove a Renault Megane E-Tech Electric with CarPlay as a rental, and I liked it a lot.

My daughter picked up Tears of the Kingdom a few weeks ago, and has completely fallen into the Zelda lore rabbit hole.

She’s been begging me to dig out my Game Cube so she can play Windwaker and the N64 games, which I have on the promo disc, as well as Twilight Princess on the Wii — which I don’t own, so I’d have to get a copy.

However—the TV we got for our basement two or three years ago apparently doesn’t have component video? Don’t worry though, it’s got two sets of standard RCA jacks.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris The Game Cube was the first console I've ever owned. I bought it used, but I never played it much because I bought the then brand new PS3 shortly after.
I've thought about hooking the Game Cube up again, but I'm not sure I'd actually use it.

Is there a decent sleep tracking app for iOS that’s not constantly trying to sell me things? After 10+ years, I think I’m finally done with Sleep Cycle.

I want to pay for something, preferably outright, but I’d settle for something with a reasonable annual subscription ($40/year is not reasonable).

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris I switched from Sleep Cycle to Autosleep many years ago. I'm generally happy with it, and it's not a subscription:

@Ardvaark @Chris Agreed!

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris @Ardvaark I always sleep with my watch on. I rarely use alarms, but when I do, I use AutoWake. I think I bought a bundle that included both.

Modern TV shows and movies need two options for subtitles: One with all the lyrics to soundtrack songs and descriptions of sound effects and background music. The other should be the closed captioning and nothing else.

I turn on subtitles because I can’t always hear the actors speaking clearly, not because I can’t hear anything at all.

A lot of people might benefit from all that but it’s a distraction for me, and often gives things away. Make it just another language option and everyone wins.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris Some have that option. I can't remember where I've seen it, but I know for certain that I have.

Should I bother with for any reason? I’ve had the account forever but I never open the app.

I feel like it’s just a place to consume a steady feed of posts from Big Accounts, not a place of communities like has been for me.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris I haven't made up my mind yet. I resisted Bluesky until early this year. Now I have basically all the platforms, and each one has a few accounts I wouldn't want to miss. But I don't get any engagement anywhere but here, so that's where I mostly post.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris It's not only big accounts I would miss. Some of my IRL friends are on Bluesky because they didn't like it here. Most of the accounts I follow have hundreds or low thousands of followers – not small, but also not what I would call big.

Happy 40th birthday, Macintosh!

To make it about me for a second, the fact that PCalc is 31 years old too is just wild, because it means I’ve been doing all this for a not insignificant chunk of the Mac’s entire existence.

It definitely felt to me like I came late to the Mac, because I didn’t use one until 1990, but in reality it was only 6 years old when I bought a Mac Classic.

Not to mention, I was working at Apple itself when the Mac was only 12.

Now somehow, it’s 40? How does that work?

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@jamesthomson I wouldn't have thought I've been using a Mac longer than you. My parents bought a Mac II in 1987. In Germany it cost an absolute fortune, even with a large educational discount.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

I’ve got a DoorDash order on the way and I feel like I should tip the guy more after the restaurant kept him waiting for like 25 minutes.

It was a $22.50 tip. Should I add $5? I feel like I should.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris How much was the order when the tip was already that high?
Tipping works differently in Germany, and the guys often seem surprised that I tip at all.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris Who gets the "service fee"? I'm assuming DoorDash? At least that would make it transparent. I typically use Lieferando in Germany, which is the same company as GrubHub in the USA. Here there is no service fee, which means the customer doesn't see how much the company gets and how much the restaurant.

hagedose68,
@hagedose68@social.cologne avatar

@Chris By German standards they're still not very good jobs. For example, Lieferando is fighting unionization. I know that's par for the course in the US, but here anti-union measures are still frowned upon.
