Leading teams who build apps, websites and other restaurant tech. Love tech in just about all forms, cats in many forms and cars in a few forms. Pics of fire pits, family, and hammocks are likely to be found here. Read way too much, mostly sci-fi, fantasy, tech and history, but random other stuff as well. Enjoy tinkering in my workshop and building random bits. He/him.

I’ve really tried to get into Doctor Who. It’s never stuck. Even Jodie Whittaker and David Tennant — bags of charm, both of them — couldn’t pull me in. Matt Smith seemed fun, too. Ncuti Gatwa was good in his small role in Masters of the Air, and he more than held his own alongside Tennant, but I think I’m resigned to the fact that the Doctor just isn’t my bag. It’s the stories. They just aren’t aimed at me.

@tantramar that so mirrors my own experiences. I have forever felt like the weird person who doesn’t get into it, despite trying.

About 99.9% of corporate management or business owners tell unionizing employees, “a union would wipe out the ’flexible and open-door atmosphere we have tried to foster.’” When pressed for specifics, these bozos never have an answer. Unions have specific ones: wages, sudden scheduling changes, understaffing, work conditions, sick leave policies, etc. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/27/nyregion/board-game-cafe-workers-union-nyc.html?searchResultPosition=2

Seattle legislated a lot of this. Our regional (not just Seattle) unemployment rate is 3.9%. https://www.bls.gov/eag/eag.wa_seattle_md.htm#eag_wa_seattle_md.f.1

@glennf couldn’t agree more. Had a thought the other day, that most of what people think HR should be for, is really the purpose of a union. I’m not even talking hourly workers; I am fully on board with everyone up thru first line managers in offices being in the union.

@jamesthomson so, did you also ignore the guys responding to our conversation on LLMs this morning? They dribbled in today and I was wondering if you deal with that regularly?

hardly_ted,
@hardly_ted@hachyderm.io avatar

@jamesthomson that was what I assumed you were doing, and I learned long ago don’t argue with people on the internet, but yeah, that is super annoying. First time in my year+ here it had happened. Ugh.

hardly_ted,
@hardly_ted@hachyderm.io avatar

@jamesthomson lol, no kidding. i just wasn't quite expecting team LLM to be quite that unable to see criticism for what it is. I know the crypto bros can't take a hint. :)

Oh my gosh I just figured it out.

Okay, all you open source evangelist people: your knee-jerk reaction to come at people who are talking about a problem with whatever commercial software they use and suggest Your Favorite Alternatives™ is exactly like saying "why don't you just buy a house?" to someone complaining about their landlord.

EDIT: There's more than one post here. Pick apart the analogy if you will but... beware you'll be proving the point.

@hardly_ted@hachyderm.io avatar

@TechConnectify I hadn't experienced what you have been discussing, until today, when I made the mistake of talking about LLMs and HOLY SHIT can these fuckers not read and understand any criticism of their pet projects. They've been all up in my mentions today and I just 🙄 every time.

When your laptop says it has 10% battery remaining, do you:

a) Plug it in immediately
or
b) Think "I'd better plug it in soon" then wonder why it switches off an hour later, like I do basically every time.

@twostraws I wonder how it was that I got myself into this situation. Questionable life choices. ;)

@glennf I might be able to help. I've led tech at brands with 4000+ locations. Happy to chat, even though I'm not front line.

I'm a little sad today. Not just for remembering the passing of Steve Jobs. But after almost a year of being here, I'm finally having to block trolls on Mastodon. Dammit.

These assholes should realize that I spent a decade working for Steve. So, this girl doesn't get intimidated.

And I almost pity the poor motherfuckers who try to mansplain Web browsers or video transcoding to me. Almost.

Hilton has this check-in system now where you don't have to interact with people. While it's more efficient, it's a weird thing to make part of your brand.

hardly_ted,
@hardly_ted@hachyderm.io avatar

@glennf tried it 2 weeks ago at ORD Hilton and did not work at all. Waited in a massively long line at 1130pm just to get a key. Was really infuriating.

Seeing people say they’re trying bluesky and threads, it makes me wonder if the lack of an algorithm here (👋 @lisamelton ) is part of what makes some people prefer the other networks. It’s largely, at least in the people I see commenting about trying these other networks, the same people every time a new one launches. Algo can make it easy to be lazy and get fed junk, where here you need to work to build your community. No idea if it’s true, just a small pattern I am seeing.

beaveinflow, to random

Was on Threads for 35 seconds. No drafts, no DMs, a bunch of people I don’t want to follow are populating my home feed, so basically it’s a crappier Instagram with a repost function.

@beaveinflow appreciate the review. Happy with my decision to wait. Thank you for the information.
