I was presented with some materials that are DRMed (digital restrictions) that has a extension, ".acsm". Found this site: https://www.acsmconverter.com/ that removes the DRM and generates the PDF. This effort needs wider awareness and publicity. Thanks, creators of acsmconverter.com!

Amazing numbers at @fossasia 2024: 206 speakers, 215 sessions, onsite participants day 1: 2076, day 2: 1833 and day 3: 1146. All is a wonderful celebration of free and open source and the communities that sustain it. See you all next year.

Seeking all those interested in open source software tools to test whether AI solutions are fair, unbiased, transparent etc. Please consider joining the Matrix Space setup by the AI Verify Foundation (aiverifyfoundation.sg) - https://matrix.to/#/#ai-verify-foundation:matrix.org

Yes, I'm involved in AVF and look forward to global participation in this important aspect of the emerging ecosystem.

When someone or an organization says that their "generative AI solution" is production ready, it does not automatically imply that it is able to generate output that is correct.

Unless that "generative AI solution" publishes test results of the "generative AI solution", and those test results are public and verifiable and is correct, that "generative AI solution" is NOT production ready.

Convince me otherwise.

@kushal indeed, wtf. but then again, atleast, with FF/Mozilla, it will not be proprietary.

As I have predicted earlier this year, the trough of disappointment of (faux)OpenAI is upon us. The future of AI is definitely NOT generative AI: https://www.wired.com/story/openai-ceo-sam-altman-the-age-of-giant-ai-models-is-already-over

On my way to FOSDEM 2024! The last time was in 2020 and we know what happened then. Looking forward to meeting old FOSS friends and making new ones. This time I'll be representing an open source entity, AI Verify Foundation - the first of its kind from Singapore. Looking forward to the various hallway tracks. Do come say hi, won't you?

https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/irs-free-file-is-now-available-for-the-2024-filing-season it only took the US Internal Revenue Service 25 years to have a direct filing of taxes. We've been doing this in Singapore since 1997 or so.

Pro tip: cool command line: "nmcli dev wifi show-password". It will show the wifi SSID, password and a QR code to scan to connect.

Back in the late 1980s when I was working at a software company in Bellevue/Redmond, Washington, I repeated came across questions from developers as to why their code would not work on DR-DOS but is OK on MS-DOS. I found out the reason, but I did not get to document it and did not follow up with it after leaving that software company because I could not agree with their business ethics. And here is the clue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AARD_code. DOS wasn't the only area. Windows as well.

I have been invited to the ‘Vietnamese uncle just came back with a lot of fish and crabs that he caught’ gathering of Vietnamese aunties. The stuff is at the back of someone’s car and we are all gawking and asking about prices. I feel like I’ve made it in my neighborhood

@mailfence why does your QR code to enable 2FA fail when I use FreeOTP?

It implements standard TOTP and HOTP (https://freeotp.github.io/).

I have FreeOTP working successfully for years with all the sites that need it and yours is the first one that has failed.

The LTA is going forward to an update to the Electronic Road Pricing system and it is too little, too late and with ancient tech.

It is a pity that the powers that be can't pull the plug on this. They are suffering from the sunken cost fallacy after awarding a contract in 2016 (7 years ago!!!) to the tune of US$560million or so.

I’ll write a fuller response later, but when billionaire tycoons who profit from genocide say that they want to become “supermen” while explicitly endorsing colonialism, that’s not optimism. That’s fascism with a smile. I actually make stuff, and help other people make stuff, and genuine optimism (technological or not) looks like community, nurturing, organizing and empowering — not indulging billionaires who profit from genocide.

@anildash Thank you for your keynote at OH!2023. It resonated with me because I too started in the early days of the Internet - then known as ARPANet. It was the ability to network and reach out to systems somewhere out there, that was magical to me. That was in 1986/87 in grad school at ECE, Oregon State. Along with that, chip design (aka VLSI) and the thing called "AI" (Lisp etc) were my three areas of interest. I've got lots to share. Lots.
