As someone who is aging. Late thirties. How can I keep my finger on the pulse of current trends, particularly in music?

As an example. I grew up in hip-hop but at a certain point I stopped listening to new people and realised recently that I’d slept on some bangers. Like Kendrick particularly, but even people like Juice WRLD and Xxxtentacion....

harrys_balzac,

It depends on which algo/service. Pandora and I have never meshed so I just avoid that one. YouTube occasionally tosses a good one in my feed. Spotify does well enough that I pay. SoundCloud is probably my favorite.

Aside from that, I’m subscribed to a few music communities here. That has widened my net. Same with imgur - 99% of the time I’m there for the memes but occasionally someone will post something that helps me find a new band.

I’ve gotten back into going to concerts. I go by myself and end up meeting bunches of new people and we all end up talking about music, sharing the names of our favorite tracks and bands.

You’re going to have to blaze your own trail. There’s so much new music being made every day that it’s very much a “needle in a haystack” thing.

Plus, don’t automatically rule out a band because they’re not new. That is, Alien Ant Farm was never on my radar until last year. Their cover of “Smooth Criminal” hit my SoundCloud recommendations. It’s from before MJ died…anyway, I’ve listened to some of their stuff and added some to my playlists.

Keep your ears and mind open.

harrys_balzac,

So, since they’re not-so-subtlely trying to murder these students, then they are saying that political violence is okie-dokie?

harrys_balzac,

I can’t believe I forgot Caesar and Pharaoh. I played the f out of those when I was a PC only player. I sucked at them but loved them.

harrys_balzac,

The cynical side of me really can’t find an issue with the seas swallowing Florida.

harrys_balzac,

This is how you encourage piracy. Just let capitalists be capitalists.

harrys_balzac,

I’m with you on that.

Him: “Let’s go for a walk on the beach.”

Her: “Sounds romantic…but why is there a photographer following us?”

Him: “LinkedIn business to business engagement stuff.”

harrys_balzac,

Big spiders are useful though.

harrys_balzac,

There better be a scene where Gollum gets drunk, slides the ring onto his dick, then runs around screaming “my preciouses are gone!” for like ten minutes.

harrys_balzac,

Mostly “this has been answered in another thread” and “why don’t you Google it” comments in my experience.

OctoPrint USB disconnects on Linux Mint at midnight? (pawb.social)

A new and bizarre issue has emerged on my Linux Mint server that seems specific to my Ender 3 and OctoPrint. Every night at midnight, regardless of whether a print is running or not, the USB connection to the Ender fails and restarts. (See screenshot from my Telegram OctoPrint plugin.) I’ve tried setting usb.autosuspend to -1...

harrys_balzac,

Hopefully Boring. As dumb as a cement parachute. Unless it’s for billionaires.

harrys_balzac,

Someone call the Romanians. Andrew Tate has gotten his hands on a contraband cell phone.

harrys_balzac,

Found the NYPD burner account.

ACAB. Eat the rich.

Get fucked bootlicker.

harrys_balzac,

Don’t forget about running a social media company too!

harrys_balzac,

Pretty much. The RNC belongs to Herr von Shitzenpantz.

harrys_balzac,

The paradox of tolerance does not exist. Tolerance is a social contract, not a moral imperative.

Acceptance of false paradox is what the intolerant and authoritarian want.

By rejecting it as false, it lays bare that the intolerant have rejected polite society and have made themselves open to be rightfully marginalized and ostracized.

harrys_balzac,

I’m not trolling.

The minute you allow intolerance to exist, you have lost.

Karl Popper framed it incorrectly. He makes it sound like a moral imperative and the hateful have seized on that.

If tolerance is a moral issue there is little that can be done about those who choose to be intolerant. Being moral is an individual choice.

It IS a social contract, howevet. If I want my lifestyle to be tolerated then I need to tolerate that of others, unless my (or their) lifestyle imposes unnecessary restrictions on the other.

For example, all the Christians whining about Christianity not being tolerated. They’re getting it wrong - nobody is saying don’t be Christian. They break the contract by imposing their specific values on everyone else by force.

There is a baseline on which the vast majority agree concerning appropriate behavior in society. Murder, for example, is generally considered wrong. We don’t tolerate it.

Breaking a contract has consequences.

harrys_balzac,

I didn’t have to program this, thankfully. The code was used as an example of recursion but the explanation was lacking so I ended up writing out each frame by end until I understood it. Took a few pages and a couple of hours.

I am grateful that I learned what I did going through it but I’d rather not do it again.

harrys_balzac,

It hasn’t but the capitalistic system has. Actually, it’s dead but they’ve been “Weekend at Bernies”-ing us since the 1980s.

harrys_balzac,

Obviously we should be encouraging this person to refuse the papers.

By accepting the papers the private person is passively entering into a contract with the Marshalls of Mathers allowing the judge to impose sanctions because You’ve accepted their authority even if you didn’t vomit mom’s spaghetti on your sweater so the only recourse is to reject the papers and produce your writ of nonincorporation and decorporation to reinforce through habeas mentam stulta that you were clearly traveling not driving because operating a motor vehicle isn’t the same as driving obviously as driving means using a golf club and operating uses a scalpel and as you were using neither, you were traveling.

Star Wars – The Phantom Menace: still terrible after all these years? (www.theguardian.com)

Can it really be that there are Star Wars fans who see George Lucas’s Episode I – The Phantom Menace, once considered the emblem of everything that went wrong with the long-running space saga, as a bona fide classic ripe for rehabilitation 25 years on? As the much-derided 1999 film returns to cinemas this weekend, there are...

harrys_balzac,

Terrible? Yes. The worst Star Wars movie? Very debatable. Especially if they had bothered to make Episodes 8 and 9.

harrys_balzac,

Judges hate this ONE trick! Click here to find out how.
