Geeks: coworker was arguing against putting some configuration stuff in environment variables. Their primary argument was that they didn't want it to "become a kitchen-sink"

I honestly can't think of a reason why that matters? who cares if you have 50 additional environment variables configuring various portions of your app?

Do you know why? Because I'm stumped.

side note: yes, there are good arguments for not putting specific types of things in there. That's not what I'm discussing.

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@masukomi personally, I prefer a config file. It can encrypted with a password supplied through environment variables if required.

Jesus. The new outlook for Mac forced me to "upgrade" to the new interface which is, to put it mildly, completely different to the old version. Spent a couple of minutes googling how to revert. Why the heck do software engineers do this?

harshad,
@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@iangriffin sigh, people haven't learned after decades of these shenanigans and customers complaining.

// I remain happy with previous colleagues in design who understood that customers spend time to learn our tools and corporate rebranding or fresh ideas in design does not imply resetting their skills. They continue to use our tools because they're good at using them, upsetting that is dumping a big landfill in the "business moat" 🤷‍♂️

Android app from a large company frequently asks how you would rate the said app. Takes you to play store to get your "feedback" on record if you vote thumbs up, does nothing if you're not happy 🤷‍♂️

No luck photographing the lunar eclipse tonight. However, fireflies!

Also it started to drizzle as I compose this post, so no chance going outside after this.

Long-exposure and close up of branches of a small acacia tree, a firefly has walked over a branch leaving a blinking yellow-green light-trail behind.

Edit: Checked dates again, this photo is 10 years old.

Sharing because the quality is fried-potato, but since I didn't care that I wasn't carrying a bigger/better camera and made the photo anyway, the memory remains :)

Given how vast the cash-cows of Azure and AWS are ... it is astonishing to me how bad the user-interfaces for both actually are

@harshad@sharma.io avatar

@Pwnallthethings @tdp_org from a recent issue closed with Oracle today, "This is your final warning, pay up or…" sent screenshots of every screen where their system also grays out the button to pay and shows "no items" for pending payments. Someone manually reset stuff to finally make the system accept my payment.

me: sets up new server, logs in for the first time
server: "There were 12 failed login attempts since the last successful login."

Update: today it's 2946 failed login attempts. Gonna move the SSH server to another port just because I can.

@fasterthanlime Have been using Tailscale / Wireguard for many months (years?) now; considering disabling direct SSH access from public internet completely. Have fallback for console access if/when VPN fails.

@float13 @strypey I use a custom dictionary of top 10k English words (+ domain specific words) when writing documentation and code, along with reasoning that that's the average vocabulary of a non native English speaker. The word list and configuration is included in the repository.

The last team i worked with were unsure at first but feedback from users after my changes to the docs convinced them enough to adopt the configuration into their text/code editors.

Make it explicit; helps our case

harshad,

@strypey @float13 here's the wordlist in a recent repo, haven't included the vscode config yet, I use cspell plugin with default dictionary to l set to "lorem ipsum" and custom workspace dict set to this file.

Goooood morning.

Here's a cute goat, because I want to run a night sky poll with all of you that I run with my astro 101 class every semester (with incredibly depressing results).

Should be interesting to see how different or not the results are - loads of people I interact with here are astronomers, so will be a bit skewed and hopefully not as depressing...

@ScribblingOn it's hard, sorry for your loss! i have no words that may comfort right now.

I'm already hearing people under 40 saying "the worst of climate change won't be my problem, I'll be dead before that happens" and it's disheartening.

Here i am doing what i can with what i have to hold on to biodiversity so that those who come after me might have a fighting chance. I'll likely live and die alone, but that doesn't free me from the what i owe to the next generation, whoever's kids they may be.

Sure my generation got shafted by "elders", that's no excuse to be like them.
