4 years to the day after George Floyd was murdered, here's where we are:

  • Racist people are just as racist as the day before George Floyd was murdered.

  • Black people are still asking for the exact same things.

  • "Liberal" and "Centrist" white Americans are more racist, and less supportive of DEI than they were the day before George Floyd.

  • Police budgets have grown faster than they did the day before George Floyd.

  • Biden has undone any of the gains made during the protests.

I think of this every time I wake my MacBook up from a furious sleep, its fans blasting full-speed to render Apple's default screen saver of a fully animated drone flight over Californian vineyards, in order to get back to my screenful of tiled xterms.

@jmac @randomgeek TBF, wouldn’t something like an M1 Mac be characterised as pretty “cheap, efficient and reliable”? (Speaking as someone who’s both main computer and band’s main computer is computers of that generation, bought second-hand .)

I bet Apple hate how long they last, though. 😛

Why does Apple keep making the iPad thinner when all we want is to run OSX on the thing!?

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@andycarolan Hopefully they'll overhaul the software at WWDC...

But there are great reasons for why it needed to be lighter! (And "thinner" is just a bi-effect.) https://havn.blog/2024/05/14/yes-the-ipad.html

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@andycarolan Yup! And the lighter weight literally made it possible to give the keyboard a function row, which is absolutely not nothing.

Plus, as opposed to with Macs, you want to be able to hold it in your hands (or preferably "hand") for an extended period.

I 100% agree with everyone on the limitations of iPadOS (but holding my harshest judgement until after WWDC) - excellently summarised by @viticci. But I don't think making it thinner and lighter was in vain.

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@andycarolan Yeah, and it's extra annoying because it feels so unforced from Apple! Like, they even refuse third parties to fix Apple's problems. 🤷🏻‍♂️

When I worked as a teacher, I used my iPad as my main work computer - because the pencil made it a fantastic whiteboard. But now I'm way too deep into Raycast, BetterTouchTool, Cleanshot X, Keyboard Maestro, etc., to go back. 🙃

Huh, you don't even like to draw on it? Affinity/ProCreate/++ and the new pencil doesn't excite you? 🙂

(1/2)

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@andycarolan I do some amateur dabbling in Affinity Designer - but I don't feel the urge to use the iPad, though. But I could imagine doing it if a non-zero amount of the work was closer to drawing, and my iPad was faster and larger.

Can someone explain to me why we don’t have media queries for browser engines in ? Just pride?

I get that we, in a perfect world, wouldn't need it - because the standards were strong enough. But I live in the real world, and would prefer not to write shit like this:

--variable: 0.17rem;
@supports (text-wrap: pretty) {
--variable: 0.07rem;
}
@supports (-moz-appearance: none) {
--variable: 0.11rem;
}

Advice for doing this better is appreciated!

I use a custom smart list for my "today" view in Reminders (default doesn't allow for custom parameters and is thus not very 'smart' at all). Want to map Action Button to that Smart List, but it's not an option. So, Shortcuts... right?

Well, Shortcuts lets me open a "Smart List" or just a regular "List;" however, my Smart List doesn't appear in either—not in Lists because it's no regular List—but also not in Smart Lists because that apparently only shows the defaults?

Am I very dumb?

image/png

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@snazzyq I've sometimes had slowness in data populating in Shortcuts - so I'd wait/do a restart dance. However if I understand you correctly, the smart list ain't new. 😕

So then I have nothing, except saying that Shortcuts has to be the most buggy thing Apple ships by far. 🙃

Oh, you could try adding from your Mac instead. That worked for me once, for some reason. 🤷🏻‍♂️

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@snazzyq Good stuff...

I haven't used Reminders much - but does it support x-callback-urls? Could you fetch that somehow and use an open URL action?

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@snazzyq Hmm, it seems possible, but not easy: https://hookproductivity.com/help/integration/using-hook-with-apple-reminders/
(Hookmark is on Setapp - which I assume you know. ☺️)

If it's a one-off, so you just need to get a hold of this one link to set up this one shortcut, it could be worth it to do some finessing to extract the concrete x-apple-reminder:// URL. But it seems like a clunky workflow to do often.

Whenever I make feature request to developers, I try to be constructive and nice about it - but this is the most positive feedback I think I've gotten on one. 😅

"Hi!

I’m enjoying Empty a lot - it’s a delightful little app, at a great price. But there’s one thing I’m missing from Zero: Lock Screen Widgets. (1/3)

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@dxzdb Weird! I got the link by long pressing on the app icon on my phone…

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@dxzdb @seanallen_dev Ah, cool!

Yeah, the ones the Zero app has are really nice, as they are live countdowns. Btw., even if you don’t care about fasting (which I’m not big into myself, even though I’m dipping my toe) I’d check out Empty anyway. It has some great UX stuff that could provide some inspiration down the road. 🙂

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@dxzdb @seanallen_dev Yeah, I’ve experienced before that that list takes a bit to refresh. (With other apps.)

Yeah, I liked the on-boarding as well! I discovered the app through @johnvoorhees, when he talked about how he didn’t like the on-boarding. And one of the reasons was that they ask for your theme preference so early. And I think that’s perfectly fair - but I always go for theme as the first thing, so I was happy. 😁

@daringfireball Can you help me understand something, @gruber?

As an example, say Apple made APIs and processes to let other, serious smart watch makers get (more or less) the same interoperability with the iPhone as the Apple Watch currently has.

How would that make the Apple Watch worse?

(Because I think something like that would make "everyone" happy. It's unfair to say that the only alternative is to let "everyone automatically have access to everything".)

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@gruber I absolutely do not accept the premise that the only two choices are "Today's situation" and "Kernal extensions for everyone!" - like there's absolutely nothing in between.

My sister has an iPhone and a Fitbit, and my wife an iPhone and an Apple Watch. Can you please explain to me how my wife's Apple Watch would become worse if my sister's Fitbit worked better with her phone? Because I honestly don't get it.

Hi, @hotdogsladies!

I don’t remember which podcast, but I’ve heard you talk about wanting to shout out in space and have your thoughts be collected with some info. Like when you said it etc.

How are you doing re: that workflow? You see, I’m working on something similar atm, and if you give your specs (it’s must do this and this in these settings and put this and this info here), I think I could give you a solution. 🙂… (1/2)

People in the music industry, explain to me this.

Spotify pays you $0.003 each time your song gets played. Meanwhile, on Discogs, I see recently released copies of vinyl albums selling for $200.

If you can sell one vinyl album for that much money, why don’t you do it?

havn,
@havn@mas.to avatar

@benroyce Agreed!
I've been thinking about this a lot these past months - and I did some dreaming about in this blog post recently: https://havn.blog/2024/03/09/an-idea-for.html

(Would love to hear your thoughts about this as well, @atomicpoet!)

Vinyl, and other merch/ways to support artists, is still a good idea though.

Just read the 18.000+ words (😓) essay by :
https://hardcoresoftware.learningbyshipping.com/p/215-building-under-regulation

It ends on this:
«[] are handling this with incredible aplomb in the face of what I think of as an assault on a brand promise that single-handedly brought computing into the twenty-first century.»

It’s fascinating how differently one can view the same world…

The most «shocking» sentence to me, though:
"Regardless, it is not a tax, and it isn’t rent seeking as those are bad things only governments can do.»

havn,

What do you say, @stroughtonsmith? Agree on Apple handling this with «incredible aplomb»? 😅
