Listen.

It's not about whatever Microsoft is doing with these features today. Maybe it's apocalyptic, maybe it's not. But what we're seeing is next-level disregard for user choice about their OS. Yes, even for Microsoft, this is exceptional.

And in the constant pursuit of monetizing our data or extracting training sets, we must confront the question of what they will push on us next, without consent or reasonable recourse.

This is not an OS under owner control, and as such, should not be trusted for any purpose where data security is a concern.

I struggle to think of a use case where it isn't.

So-called progressive/liberals and conservatives as outlined by Malcolm X: 'The white liberal differs from the white conservative only in one way: the liberal is more deceitful than the conservative. The liberal is more hypocritical than the conservative. Both want power, but the white liberal is the one who has perfected the art of posing as the Negro's friend and benefactor; and by winning the friendship, allegiance, and support of the Negro, the white liberal is able to

"Surprisingly, our results show that women's contributions tend to be accepted more often than men's. However, when a woman's gender is identifiable, they are rejected more often. Our results suggest that although women on GitHub may be more competent overall, bias against them exists nonetheless."

A public service announcement with an expiration date: if you've loved my writing and science, I have a book proposal+sample chapter out on submission right now. The pitch is "The Psychology of Software Teams": a general audience, warmly human, accessible book for teams, leaders, and curious minds, filled to the brim with practitioner stories AND the new empirical social science of technology innovation. 🙌❤️

Let me know if you know editors who might be interested in this uniquely cool project.

THE CODE REVIEW ANXIETY WORKBOOK IS OUT

https://developer-success-lab.gitbook.io/code-review-anxiety-workbook-1

This workbook takes the code review anxiety intervention that we designed and tested in our empirical research (https://osf.io/preprints/psyarxiv/8k5a4) & distills it into a self-paced workbook for you. It's designed for you to read & work through as many times as you wish and provides you with the tools you need to mitigate & manage your anxiety about giving or receiving code reviews.

This is great but can we please also have Fedora (& Ubuntu, etc.) acknowledge they started shipping operating systems without a functional screen reader when they switched to Wayland and that that’s still the case?

This is not to name and shame. Unless we acknowledge this as an error on par with shipping without monitor support and unless the culture is altered to make accessibility a showstopper, it’ll happen again.

Never ceases to stump me that we have the technology to kill 99.95% of airborne viruses, proven to work, non-invasive, cheap to deploy and install, and is produced at scale already and we just like - collectively - kind of just don't really use it.

HEPA-grade air filtration is proven, cheap, and makes everyone's lives strictly better. It, like, makes zero fiscal sense for governments not to mandate its use in all covered public spaces ASAP.
