Dear new followers:

I'm the kind of Tooter who will absolutely toot about orgies+shenanigans, middle age sciatic pain, my dog Benson, and the ongoing genocide in Gaza. It's all my jam.

Hope you enjoy your stay on my feed.

@DeliaChristina someone being their whole self on the Internet? Love it ❤️

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

Have you thought at all, for even a minute, about the business model of OpenAI?

In one sentence: "We will take every actual human-created content, the golden egg, from everyone, without permission, and then we will use it to sell plausible made-up shit, simultaneously choking out the creation of all new human-created content, the goose."

Ponzi was vastly more sophisticated than this.

I've long regarded extractive capitalism as corrupt, but I had no idea they were all so stupid.

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@GeePawHill probably the most absurd thing of the entire proposal for me is how stunningly ineffective it is. Seriously, we take every single ounce of human written content and pour billions of dollars into it, analyzing it, categorizing it, and building a computational engine that requires an entire fucking rainforest of computers to run.

With the result of... "Not ready for primetime. Come back when it can be as useful as a 7 year old kid"

Really? That's the game changer?

@filenine I did! Whoops :)

hazelweakly,

@filenine @recursive oh yeah absolutely. Quite a few also love that I drive a stick shift too :)

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@filenine @recursive they work great for me cause I'm super ADHD and I need the extra stimulation to pay sufficient attention to the road. My mind wanders otherwise :)

My favorite genres of animated movies:

  • sapphic and queer love
  • trans coded coming of age
  • traumatized parent tries to raise young kid and struggles with not traumatizing them while young kid deals with being torn between external expectations and internal desires
  • strong female lead kicks ass and is allowed to be both powerful and pretty
hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

Ok let's be honest that's my favorite genre of movie period

@theogrin I'm literally watching that with my kiddo right now and it was the inspiration for this post hahahaha

So yeah! It does!

The Trap of Soulless Productivity by @hazelweakly Seriously! Humans are wired to be productive by sharing, by loving, by growing. ... It just breaks my heart that we have so much out there still that’s stuck in this old way of thinking that the only way to have humans create efficiently is to torture them into submission and rip out their very souls and dump them into the Capitalism Monster.` <-- read the whole thing: https://hazelweakly.me/blog/soulless-productivity/ !

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@roland thanks for sharing!

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@filenine @roland In reality it will be quite adversarial. However, in theory, it doesn't need to be. Performance and excellence of output in groups doesn't require you to stoop to the level of punishment perverse incentives, and bribing people to do "shit work"

There is a world in which "just do what makes you feel fulfilled and work towards a goal that achieved that" actually works out. The harsh cruel real world is a human invention of laziness and greed rather than a necessity of scale

The folks at InfoQ published (and transcribed!) the talk I gave at QCon New York in June 2023—Embrace Complexity; Tighten Your Feedback Loops—and is now available at: https://www.infoq.com/presentations/complexity-feedback-loops/

how adhd am i? very. very highly extremely levels of adhd

You want me to design extremely resilient distributed systems and teach people how to do that, design architecture, and level up an organization? Sure, no problem

Make one single solitary tiny lil phone call or fill out even the barest hint of paperwork? Absolutely not, it is so hard

hazelweakly,
@hazelweakly@hachyderm.io avatar

@artcollisions oh shoot I forgot about the photo 😅

Excellent, thanks for reminding me! There are some places that do the photo in location and have availability, I just need to have all the other documents in order first
