I'm an #ActuallyAutistic and #AuDHD life coach, helping later identified autistics to break free from a lifetime of “shoulds” and NT-norms to make a better life.

It has taken me a long time to get to the point where I can give myself permission not to do things that a part of me thinks I have to do, but it's so much nicer inside my head now.

When I was tired, or burnt out, or couldn't do as much as I saw other people doing, it wasn't because I wasn't good enough, it was because I was using up all my energy just to deal with my environment.

Autism explained why I had so many of the difficulties I had growing up, and as an adult. It explained why I kept doing things that hurt me but also couldn't stop. Why I could be so smart academically, and yet so stupid socially.

It’s such a weird thing that our society requires people to display such a unique skill set (interviewing) in order to determine whether you can do an entirely unrelated job.

hmm_cook, to random

Interviews are a perfect storm of anxiety producing mechanisms.

Not only do they put you in a highly unusual environment and then ramp up the stakes, they give you very little useful feedback about how to perform better the next time.

When we have a little fun each day—and it really only has to be a little—there's something to look forward to the next day.

Life then isn’t just dragging yourself from one day to the next, or working towards a future better life; the process of day to day life now becomes more enjoyable.

Here's the recording of a workshop I gave on anxiety reduction for :
https://youtu.be/2kduDa0MXbs?feature=shared

(There's a lot of good info here, and if you're interesting in more on how to put this into practice, I'm offering a course on that in Feb.)

Behavior is always a symptom. Granted, sometimes it's not obvious what it is a symptom of.

Trying to control or modify a behavior doesn't fix the underlying problem, and not being allowed to cope often adds anxiety and an identity of being broken or wrong or not good enough or unworthy.

Getting through tough situations by sheer force of willpower can get results in the short term, but it always has huge long-term consequences.

And forcing yourself to do something that hurts you is not success.

You can’t learn and grow and thrive when you’re struggling to just get through each day.

First find and reduce your hidden stressors, so that other improvements can become possible.

Here's a few of my thoughts on, is it rude for autistics to spend holidays in their room?

Meltdowns are not tantrums. They are not a choice. They are not manipulative. They are an extreme stress reaction.

Trying to repress our stims is a double whammy. It both doesn't let us get the calming affect, and it takes a lot of energy to try to repress the impulse, which further the ramps up our stress.

If you're looking for some Autistic friendly alternative income ideas, and tips on how to make it work for our neurotype, and answer some common executive functioning questions around alternative work, from an actually Autistic woman: that's the topic of my next free workshop, in Jan.

Yes, it really is free, not a disguise for marketing. You'll get my newsletter, but that's all, the workshop will not be a sales pitch.

Follow up question about ANC headphones. Does anyone have a good trick for dealing with headphones pressing glasses into the side of your face? I hate that feeling.

(I definitely went over the ear, I have the Loops already, but sometimes I need more.)

Do you prefer over-the-ear headphones, or in-ear earbuds?

As for me, I strongly prefer over-the-ear. I don't like things in my ears. [shudder]
