#Israel / Ben-Gvir: “lethal force should be used against women and children approaching the fence”

During a cabinet meeting, far-right Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir clashed with #IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi over rules of engagement along the #Gaza border. Ben-Gvir argued that clear directives were needed to prevent another #Hamas attack, saying lethal force should be used against women and children approaching the fence as potential militants.

The heated exchange reflects tensions between the military and the new right-wing government over policies toward Palestinians, with hawkish ministers pushing for tougher measures and clearly illegal measures, despite warnings from security officials and the international community.

@nilsskirnir @oatmeal that's ridiculous. Bernie is proud of his Jewish heritage, he's just unhappy with the way Israel is conducting itself in the last 50+ years. I share that sentiment deeply, but I'm stuck here with my one passport (working on that).

Zionism was a great idea till 1967, and then it got distorted and taken over by messianic racist fundamentalists. It may be too late to roll it back now, unless somehow Bibi's successor actually founded a Palestinian stable state.

@nilsskirnir @oatmeal also, AIPAC and the ADL are a hard right leaning bunch. Not sure they're doing Israel any good. From the little I know about them, they are not on the "good guys" list in my book. If Bernie stays away I bet he has excellent reasons and I should trust them.

In about 11 hours Israelis are going to vote. No, we won't be able to vote out Bibi just yet, sadly, this is just for municipalities and regional councils. However like with national elections, haredi voters have a higher turnout than secular voters, and so many liberal cities end up having too many messianic conservatives hogging seats, budgets and in general using the popular vote for unpopular governing.

I urge all diaspora Jews to be relentless nudniks and send your Israelis to vote!

The terrorists who decimated kibbutz Be'eri somehow skipped the printing factory. Little did they know, it's where Israel prints all of its drivers' licences, credit cards, monthly credit reports and many more sensitive items from privacy-sensitive computer data.

A month later, MKs and ministers finally start to show up and visit the area, the few kibbutzim like Be'eri that have people present are blocking their entry with their bodies.

After seeing FB used to derail democratic elections, the Brexit vote, fire up the Rohingya pogroms and used as a terror effect multiplier for the Netanyahu massacre, I think Doctorow's criticism is quite relevant.

Lazzarini says has not provided substantive evidence to back its accusations against UNRWA employees and dismissal of the organization's neutrality. He calls for full cooperation from Israel in investigating the claims.

Despite Israel not providing full intelligence report; Lazzarini says he fired 10 of them immediately based only on a verbal briefing from Israel's Foreign Ministry.

Israel did not raise any issues with the list of all UNRWA employees that is shared annually. The 12 suspected employees were included on the latest list from May 2023.

Lazzarini questions the claims that 10% of UNRWA Gaza staff are linked to Hamas, saying they have not received this information and don't know the source.

He argues UNRWA has limited ability to detect Hamas tunnels under its buildings in Gaza, as it lacks military expertise and mandate.

He denies claims of widespread diversion of UNRWA aid to Hamas, saying aid is distributed directly to families without intermediaries. He acknowledges he can't fully rule out some aid being taken and resold on black market.

We see 76 years of perpetualizing hereditary refugee status and false hopes of return.

This isn't a fluke.

When I was at Columbia, there was an undergrad senior in the program who bragged about his nunchuk collection. When central admin heard, midway through spring semester, they stripped him of his TAship and banned him from campus except for the classes (IIRC 1 class?) he needed to take to graduate. Columbia did not bother informing the grad schools he'd applied to. Then while at admitted students' visit to the school of his choice, he sexually harassed women, and had his offer rescinded.

@faab64 woah. When I find myself agreeing with Shapiro I feel like I need to go see a doctor and give a stool sample and some blood work. He's wrong calling it a blood libel maybe but Andres calling it a targeted killing is also an ugly accusation. Wars are a mess, and after 6 months a lot of mistakes are made by fatigued people. I blame Bibi, of course, for so many things that got us here, but not for targeting foreign aid workers. Makes no sense.

The cars were not marked for night vision, the communication between the unit on the ground and the high command was broken and I have a feeling even more officers will be discharged (and brought to judgment). Contrary to what you believe, this is is a very bad incident for us on every level.

first, there were dozens of campaigns of disinformation in this war, from all sides, and hitting "retweet" or forward is way too easy.

Third, I support the war against Hamas, not against civilians and chemical warfare use. I supported a humanitarian 3-4 week ceasefire, but this tips me over to full stop.

@faab64 @palestine @israel this is absolutely horrendous , but a picture search returned only political results from Instagram and Xitter. Is there news reports or some official source corroborating this story? When and where? How many others hurt? If true this needs to be escalated and we Israelis should take immediate action against the army officers that allowed this, but if false it's just hateful disinformation.
