@mitsuhiko it's still nicer on balance. I'm not going to hold my breath for Twitter to die but I'm pretty ready for it to end.

During BLM protests, the major news networks kept framing upcoming BLM protests as dangerous for white people. "The Black people are coming to your town!" even though many of (most of!) the BLM marchers were white?🤔

Now I'm seeing a similar dynamic with Gaza ceasefire protest coverage. But it's getting harder to ignore the fact that many (admittedly not most) of the folks asking for human rights to be respected, are Jewish and/or Israeli. ♥️👍🏿

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@mekkaokereke Are you seriously saying, with a straight face, that violent mass riots with people chanting genocidal slogans like “from the river to the sea” are safe and inclusive?

@mekkaokereke I don't follow

Probably something most people don't realize yet: the extreme left has robbed the entire left of the ability to persuade anyone in the middle. "Oh I guess the people shitting on the whole 'woke' thing were right."

I mean, yes, but also it was nearly twenty years ago when Hamas murdered Fatah and every other challenger in a brief and bloody civil war. Hamas wasn’t incapable or small twenty years ago and it’s a mistake to think they could have been “nipped in the bud”.

The PLO/Fatah is not Hamas today, becaise they elected to pursue their goals through means other than murder. That glosses over a mountain of context, Fatah is not all peaceniks, the world is complicated. But the point is: Hamas are the hardliners rejected the political process. They were never harmless. We might have been able to kill them more easily twenty years ago, but we chose the political process. We chose to leave Gaza (and it was a painful choice, to forcibly uproot our own civilians).

I don’t know if I regret the effort or not. It’s easy to be principled about pursuing peace. But then I look at the hostages, at the blood, the fear, the terror, the evil — and I cannot be sure anymore. https://infosec.exchange/@0xamit/111309928826442106

Networking nerds: I’m in the market for a UniFi router. I think within the next two years, I would like to upgrade to a Dream Machine (DM) type thing. But right now, all I really need is a Dream Router (DR) at ~1/2 the price.

Should I…

…and why?

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@janl I have a Unifi Dream Machine not-pro (predecessor to the Dream Router), three additional APs, a handful of switch minis for spots that need a few devices, and a 16-port POE switch to power all the things.

It's a really great setup and has been solid for me. I don't need any of the doorbell or camera things. I see the appeal in rackmount stuff but the reality is I have a shelf in the garage with all that stuff plus a secondhand mini pc running home assistant. Zero complaints.

I bet Biden was pretty exasperated to fly halfway around the globe and not actually get to sit down with Jordan, Egypt, etc — all because of amplified literally fake news. I mean even with Air Force One, it’s a long fucking trip

Hey coffee fedi, my aeropress has died again (plunger shrank, is weeping gross oil 🙃) and I kinda don’t want to keep making coffee in plastic, even when I’m traveling.

Does anyone have better, ideally non-plastic travel press recs from personal experience? Search results are hard to trust and I can find little french presses but they are so goopy and messy. (And I love you, pour over people, but I cannot deal with all that on the road.)

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@kissane @mattrambles @DavidDarnes I also have a Clever Dripper with a metal filter. But it’s just not the same as Aeropress. I don’t have the science to say why, AP just tastes better. But the Clever Dripper is great for tea. And either way it’s still plastic.

The striking parallels between Israel and the United States reveal an alarming trend in today's democracies. How do we understand such parallels, especially as they fit within a larger framework of anti-democratic and authoritarian movements around the world? And what is the path back from the brink? That's today's topic in . https://thinkbigpicture.substack.com/p/netanyahu-trump-strongman-israel-weaker

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@georgetakei @jaykuo good piece!

You kinda glossed over the sheer scale of the protests though. Hundreds of thousands of Israelis, every week, for forty weeks. Rain or shine.

The equivalent of MILLIONS in the US taking to the streets to oppose autocracy and corruption EVERY WEEK for FORTY WEEKS.

I am a child of both cultures. I've never seen anything remotely like this energy in the US. BLM protests were the closest thing and they were a faint echo in terms of % of population.

    Translating the zeitgeist: "We were fine being sympathetic but Israel taking any kind of action is really too far."

    Subtext: "I don't understand how Israel can't magically conduct warfare in urban areas with zero collateral damage"

    Subsubtext: "you owe us a say in exactly how you defend your civilians from murderers"

    idan,
    @idan@sfba.social avatar

    @tshirtman This is a fabulist take that imagines some kind of urban warfare that does not exist. It’s racist and ignorant, and presumes that Israel should somehow conduct military operations in a way that nobody else ever has.

    The collateral damage is because of Hamas. They hold civilians in place and operate from schools and hospitals. So we should just let them continue murdering us?

    Condemn hamas for the suffering of Palestine. Saying anything different is racist.

    https://sfba.social/@idan/111224735997399550

    idan,
    @idan@sfba.social avatar

    @tshirtman Listen, as gently as I can say it to you:

    Unless you’re suing your voice to demand the safe return of our hostages, then you’re a racist tool.

    Did you vote in our elections? No? Did you show up to protest the extremists in government? No? Do you have any connection to Israel or Palestine? No? Then when did you give yourself permission to sit and talk about a conflict you barely understand.

    If you’ve ever said “I’m not a racist”, then this should be a wake up call that you need to close your mouth and reflect on how you repeat reasonable-sounding words that actually amount to racist propaganda.

    Israel has been out of Gaza for nearly twenty years. We have gotten blood, murder, literally THOUSANDS OF ROCKETS fired at our cities.

    Palestine is not the enemy. You want to improve the lot of palestinians, ask your government to apply pressure to Hamas to return hostages.

    You can pity the people of Palestine. Your words are not that.

    idan,
    @idan@sfba.social avatar

    @tshirtman Also, the fuck do you know about urban warfare and how to conduct it.

    idan,
    @idan@sfba.social avatar

    The people accusing Israel of genocide? Actually the ones calling for genocide.

    It's just like Trump accusing people of the crimes he commits. Except: genocide
