When social justice protests swept the country in 2020, tech companies mostly welcomed employee activism. The Gaza demonstrations are getting a much different reception. @zoeschiffer talked to folks at Apple, Google Amazon, and Coinbase about it: https://www.platformer.news/tech-protests-gaza-israel-workplace-activism/

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@caseynewton @zoeschiffer Yes because BLM was about confronting our inner racism, and the Gaza protests are not innocent fights against racism, they are themselves racist agitations that call for systemic violence against millions of Israelis and have few qualms about Jew hatred.

You are platforming hatred by drawing a false equivalence.

@idan@sfba.social avatar
idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@Jonathanglick You have mobs of people calling implicitly or explicitly for the murder of millions of Israelis, dehumanization of Jews everywhere, restricting the freedom of movement of Jews. You have protestors calling to treat Israel by a different standard than they would apply anywhere else, but it goes unnoticed because they have never concerned themselves with anywhere else.

I have stood on the streets in Israel and protested the actions of my government as a citizen. Fighting oppression is a thing. But it is nearly impossible to look at these protests with a functional bullshit detector and fail to see the hatred upon which their premises and arguments rest.

Of course there's a legitimate reason to put pressure on the Israeli government to do the right thing. But I don't see anyone saying that everyone should divest from Shameful Disgusting America because Trump was once president. And I definitely don't see anyone protesting China. Or Syria. It's racist.

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@Jonathanglick Man, there's a lot to unpack in that, it's like three million dollar questions in one.

Start by unpacking whether you're really accomplishing that with whatever you're doing, or if it's just furthering someone else's agenda to enable and encourage violence against Jews and Israelis. Right now, that's the biggest problem. You cannot right a wrong by adding bigotry.

I am not understating the amount of homework it takes to understand the complex system that is FMF and how aid to Israel is ultimately a form of job subsidies for various congressional districts. Like any complex system, there are rarely single moves like "halt funding now!" which are neatly scoped. I do not see simple, slogan-sized actions. For starters, I do not think that calling US aid to Israel "funding Bibi's regime" is a legitimate simplification.

@idan@sfba.social avatar

The radical left has decided that they have the momentum to shove their racist agenda into the mainstream. And they're not wrong about that assessment, clearly. But it doesn't make it less racist.

The normalization of left-wing hate is not more okay than right-wing hate.

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@grimalkina Rust! OMG Rust. I mean, I don't know what language(s) you're into already. But I think Rust is maybe the most interesting language I've come across in years. So many languages are kinda the same. Rust... isn't? But in a really cool and thoughtful way?

And it's fucking fast, and portable, and you can target webassembly with it, and it's fast, and it's fast. Memory management without the overhead of a garbage collector. I'm still a n00b but I love reading about how the high-level features of the language work. Like, there's the borrow checker which enforces ownership, and that works by tracking the lifetime of things. But the crazy part is you can explicitly talk about object lifetimes IN THE CODE as a language feature.

It's mindbendy and awesome. I haven't had this much fun learning something so useful in years

If you are using the word genocide to describe anything about Israel or Palestine (other than the repeated attempts by Arab actors to murder every Jew across decades), then you're a racist.

@seb This toot reposted because it's not in response to anyone. It's not here to make anyone comfortable. It's here to make people uncomfortable with their own hypocrisy and racism. It's here to document my lived experience. And it's entirely factual.

idan, to random
@idan@sfba.social avatar

The sfba.social mods seem to be fine muting my posts that criticise people who racistly abuse the word "genocide". There's a pattern here, and it's not about de-escalation.

@seb This isn't okay. You're holding my speech to a different standard than you hold other people's speech.

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@shekinahcancook @seb I think about it frequently.

As a Jew in 2024, I should not have to move to a Jewish instance in order to be able to point to blatant racism and call it racist, just like I should be able to enjoy basic safety without having to live in Israel.

@serge is good people. I already have an account. But I feel the bile well up from my stomach with every space I abandon to the rising tide of normalized antisemitism.

Tonsky's exploration of JS size for many webapps was entertaining https://tonsky.me/blog/js-bloat/

On a lark I wanted to see what my favorite mastodon UI, @elk, does

500k for a fantastically polished PWA. "Twitter, the good parts". Did not disappoint.

🤔When someone questions Biden's fitness for president because he gives MK84 bombs to a dude that he knows will drop them on refugee camps full of kids, and that he will then cut off food and medical aid to the surviving kids, y'all yell "Shut up! Trump is worse! You're a fool if you even think of not voting for him!"

But when someone says, "Biden is old, and old people forget things! Let's do an ageism!" Y'all are like "Yes. Let's discuss old people. They should go away! This is a valid debate"

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

@mekkaokereke war sucks. Israel is not dropping bombs on kids for fun. Nor is it starving a population for fun. Your language matters. Stop using it racist ways.

You might not be aware of it, but the reason the GOP loves to support Israel is because… wait for it… Evangelical Christians. It’s not that Israel and the GOP is aligned somehow, therefore placing Israel in the “allies of evil” bucket because we = left, them = right.

Evangelicals believe that for The Rapture™ to happen, first all the Jews will be redeemed by christ or something, so supporting Israel is basically step one in their plan to bring about the End Times. Yeah? And now those evangelicals are running the GOP. And that’s how we get hypocritical differences on supplying arms to Ukraine vs Israel. The verbal explanations don’t make sense. Because there is no sense when God gets involved.

👋 Hi, friends who have landed on Eleventy, preferably from Jekyll.

Are there any growing pains and positive stories you can share?

Is moving from Jekyll templates to Eleventy an apples-to-apples experience, or are they different enough to be a total rewrite?

Also, will an Eleventy created today still work in two, three, or five years, or is keeping up with npm/JS an issue?

I cannot emphasize this enough: you’re on the wrong side of history, and you are also not achieving any pursuit of justice by yelling for anything but the end of Hamas and security for Israelis. There is literally no other path to the peace that both of us want but which you likely have no consequences for lacking.

In my hometown:

  • Open praise of hamas
  • Calls for (actual) genocide
  • Verbal abuse at (actual) peaceful protestors

Generally speaking the ones dressed in ski masks and calling for violence: not peaceful protestors

idan,
@idan@sfba.social avatar

I wrote a letter to my city council, after physical violence and harassment, as well as graffiti like “No peace until Israel dies” have proliferated in my town, making me and every other Jew unsafe.

It might as well be a letter to the municipality of Oakland, Berkeley, or San Francisco. Or any other local government that thinks it is “just solidarity” to accept violence against Jews as the new normal.

The two-minute speech I gave to my city council stressing the importance of serving their electorate over pretending that statements about Israel or Palestine do anything but incite more violence against Jews here, not seven thousand miles away.
