How are you with animals?

I tend to throw off the wrong vibe for people, but get along with even the iffy animals. Dogs that don't like most people warm to me.

Just wondering how much of that is autism and how much me. My dad hates animals.

@Uair @actuallyautistic I haven't had a member of another species really dislike me except twice, a neighbors small mutt who was terrifying, and an orange tabby at a camp I really wanted to be friends with who taught me, in no uncertain terms, how cats operate.

The ants in my house and I are enemies. Trespassing is a captal offense. I will also kill-on-sight centepedes (d* video games corrupting my mind....)

@lolgop I'm poor as a church mouse, given my church wouldn't even hire me when I begged. That means I have friends like me. Multiple people are saying (quoting directly), "Democrats could end poverty with the donations they collect."

I know many small donations looks better on paper, but I'm going to ask everyone who asks for cash donations for a campaign to carefully target the ask. Those blanket asks are going to people who need actual blankets. This really, really isn't OK.

@joeinwynnewood @lolgop I'm not sure what datasets are allowed, but you could look at neighborhood of residence, medicaid status and/or coverage info, or maybe use AI to look at SM feeeds to get an idea of who not to target. The legislators, though, should have an idea.

@Radical_EgoCom Unless you can find a PT job that actually pays the bills and you have enough time on the side to train for another job. This is why I insisted my kid get a free CNA certification (could have been welding or coding) before heading off to college.

I'm not sure it's a wage issue so much as it is a housing-cost issue. Capitalism is supposed to be regulated so that those numbers realistically work. Reagan broke it.

@lawas @Radical_EgoCom I'm not really an economist, or a political philosopher. I'm a dabbler, at most. My feeling is that we need innovative solutions that drive hope (HF do we need that). We need something to respond to the massive clog that happened in the "trickle down" fuck up that doesn't leave middle-income investors feeling sucker-punched.

That system doesn't yet exist.

@lawas @Radical_EgoCom Those small-time investors are all retirement accounts, and maybe a few small-to-mid-sized business owners. They are also the bulk of Americans. If you don't care about them, you'll just have their police, with the support of the big investors, shut you down.

With all due respect, you're talking about at least 100 million people, probably a third to a half who own guns themselves.

I'm not the one who's stuck in ranchville, but they are.

They negotiated some pretty hard deals, most of them, for those wages they painfully stashed, and now they've just retired, or their on there way there, inside the system. The fact is, most people work, have worked, and have tidy-but-tiny retirement nest eggs. They have literally spent their lives at it.

How are you going to make it an easy blow to them when they find out that was for nothing? Think they'll cave?

@TessRants @lawas @Radical_EgoCom I know, I'm one of them. Unfortunately, the way things are set up, there are enough voters who poured themselves into the system for whom that worked. I'm not fighting on their behalf. I'm articulating what I see as the biggest obstacle folks like us face. Neither one of us has figured out how to tackle that.

Capitalism appeals to our basest nature, there isn't even a parenting book that's got tips on how to talk people into leveling up.

@TammyGentzel @compost I use a municipal composting service. We have a huge, independent garden store that takes most of it, and some of it goes to local farmers who reliably sell at our (also municipally organized) farmers market.
One guy started the whole thing just by having the right conversations with key people. 450K people in the county have access to the service.

Much to my shock I realised that I could be autistic when I was 53, roughly 7 years ago. And it was a shock, even though I suspect a very small, well hidden and very much ignored part of me, might have suspected. No one told me about it, or suggested that it might be the case. I did not see myself in relatives, the way so many of us do. I just happened to come across an autism test online and for no particular reason, took it.

It was that, that started me on my path to realising and finally accepting the truth that I was autistic. But, looking back, I sometimes find it hard to understand how I didn't know earlier. So much of my life now, just screams autism at me. But even ignoring the horribly ableist and medieval view I had of what autism was, the main reason why I didn't was probably because I could mask, both from myself and others, so well.

It was, I realise now, a life lived in denial. A denial of how much things bothered me, how much effort I had to put into things. Even a denial of the things I knew I couldn't do. Because this is the thing about appearing to mask so well, for so long. It is, in a sense, a lie. I couldn't mask well, if at all. Not all the time. Not in all situations or circumstances. There were things I just couldn't cope with, or even begin to deal with. But the trick was, that I either knew about them, or learnt the hard way about them and then I could manage my life to avoid them. Because they were things I could live without, without affecting how I appeared to be coping. Things that didn't affect the way I lived, even if they did affect my sense of worth. Because, how broken did you have to be, not to be able to go to crowded events, like a sports match, or a concert? Or to be able to deal with the socialising of a large gathering, or a family event, without having to hide in the kitchen, or forever outside, or break down in a toilet?

It was all part of how I masked myself from myself. The internal masking, as I like to call it. If I couldn't cope, then I was broken. If I couldn't stand something, then I was too picky, or sensitive, or I simply needed to learn to ignore it. And somehow I did learn. I learnt how to cope with noise and smell and visual overwhelm. I learnt to not let things bother me. To a point at least. There was always a step too far, when I couldn't, or didn't have the energy any more to maintain it. And this did take energy, a lot of it. Something I've only realising now that I don't have the energy to spare to even try it. Or the ability to, in many respects now that I know what I was trying so desperately to hide from.

Because when the truth is known, it's far harder to deny it. It's far harder to live the life where appearing to cope, is as good as coping. Where blaming yourself, is easier than seeing others faults. Where ignoring the pain, makes the pain go away. It's hard to see the mask as a benefit and always a good thing, rather than the shield and tool it always was.

It sounds to me like you've been struggling with yourself as if you've believed you're, as you put it, fundamentally broken. One thing the community has shown me is that in so many cases I was just trying to use the machine I've got for the wrong job, so to speak. My router is a terrible wood chipper.

Stay curious! There may not be an answer, but you can still make some beautiful things.

Today we learned that our elderly neighbour(the man) went to sleep for the last time in the hospital :sad_cat:

A little while ago he was fallen again and broke the upper leg and got into the hospital. He was in much pain and it went worse quickly unfort

He did get to say goodbye to the family and was in reasonable state for that❤️

It feels kinda weird since I was helping them out recently with (something simple) like the TV and now she's living somewhere else and he is basically gone🕯️

@RustyBertrand @StillIRise1963 It's about trajectories. Republicans have always been more about bombing brown people, maximizing the profit from it, making the rich richer. That Biden wasn't able to uninstall 6 hyper-conservative SCOTUS justices wasn't a function of Biden, it's the bastions of conservatism built into a system erected by conservatives to protect themselves & their wealth.

Biden is a centrist. We don't have a Lefitst choice, but I'm sure as hell not going to roll over.

This account of a teenager & his family is heartbreaking 💔.

Families raising kids who have violent meltdowns struggle to find support. Kids like this are acutely vulnerable to the influence of anyone who is kind to them & any group in which they find acceptance. For those of us who experience meltdowns, learning to understand & manage our overwhelm & the eruptions it leads to is a lifelong journey. For most of us it’s full of failure & shame. Where & how can we find acceptance & love? How can we learn to be gentle with ourselves?

I think many folk, especially those of us who grew up undiagnosed & unsupported then raised similarly undx, distressed, overwhelmed & volatile autistic kids while unable to find help, would shudder with recognition at elements of this tragic story.

@moz @26pglt @actuallyautistic I am so very, very lucky to have such a wonderful GP. She'll back me and give me a referral to a different provider for any reason. I was mis-billed by one, and she just aid, "Try these people." I'm also in a city where there are enough providers to hop around to.

They're not all bad. And if you find good ones and go there, the one square of "free market" that works for consumers should theoretically kick in.

So sorry it's been so rough.

It's disorganized because it's multilingual and culturally inclusive.
It's disorganized because it's fighting for the rights of those who have mental illnesses and communication difficulties.
it's disorganized because by definition it lacks the resources (money) the establishment has.
Disorganization isn't a bad thing. It just is. We need to see it in and outside ourselves. We have work to do.
