What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

More than half the CO₂ emissions of the industrial age have been dumped into the atmosphere since 1990.

@davidho Much of the Amazon rainforest is only 400 years or so old, it grew after millions of indigenous peoeple died from diseases brought by conquistadors. Before that large parts were populated, with farmland, cities, states

But this doesn’t change the far bigger fact that more than half of CO2 emissions occurred since 1990

@davidho The universe may just end without warning. A small part could undergo "vacuum decay", which releases a huge amount of energy, causing a cascade which basically destroys all matter and possibly changes the fundamental laws of physics. Given that it hasn't happened yet it's probably unlikely, but there's a non-zero chance.
On the upside, the effect would probably travel at the speed of light, so we wouldn't see it coming.

bezorp,
@bezorp@mstdn.ca avatar

@_thegeoff ah so we should probably run those tests in a desert then

_thegeoff,
@_thegeoff@mastodon.social avatar

@bezorp Yup, with hardhats and hi-viz jackets.
The argument is basically the same as the LHC and black holes: nature produces much higher energy events on an hourly basis in the atmosphere - if we were capable of triggering the end of spacetime as we know it, it would have happened already.
Still, fun risk assessment to do...

mcnees,
@mcnees@mastodon.social avatar

@_thegeoff @davidho The true vacuum bubble asymptotes to the speed of light, so there may be just enough lead time for the photons to reach your eyes and send nerve impulses to your brain before The Ending.

@davidho Government/state digital services not rebuilt in the last decade years ago are most likely held together in the back office with string and prayers to a degree that would astonish most people. Some of these services rely on decades-old systems whose original developers have mostly retired now.

@davidho (Spanish teacher, I will put here a common knowledge shared with English teachers) A comma between subject and verb, is a mistake.
You should never put, a comma between verb and object.

But most laws and attorney documents, have, commas in these places.

So the next time you see the white cliffs of Dover think: " this used to be atmospheric CO2, bit nature did safely store this".

@davidho Galileo didn't prove that the earth revolves around the sun.

And, to make the case worse for the pro-empiricist religion-bashers, astronomers (including the church ones) came to accept that the earth revolves long before the evidence became available – decades before indirect evidence from Bradley circa 1720 and direct observation by Bessel circa 1840.

If that's not scientists embracing "faith", what is it?
