@petes_bread_eqn_xls Huh, for some reason I expected an in-ground swimming pool to cost far more than a truck

Given that indoor CO2 levels are a strong indicator of transmission risk (1, 2, 3) I feel like we should have laws mandating that public spaces have CO2 level monitoring alongside HVAC improvements if levels are found to be bad

Not just for COVID in particular, but our inevitable future pandemics

@Inextinguishable_Ravings Reasonable. I feel like this is one of those polices that would pay for themselves in increased productivity, but I have no numbers to back that up, just vibes

Yesterday I had one person say I'm too so pro-tech pro-capitalist and one person say I was trying to force a leftist ideology, and both were responding to A City on Mars. All I can say is I wish people would stop trying to find the hidden motive and just read the words as plainly written!

@ZachWeinersmith nice try, we all know you're secretly a Bonapartist

Less than half [of Americans] think electric cars are better for the climate. Pretty damning, considering there is strong consensus that EVs have a lower carbon footprint (even when the electricity mix is pretty heavy in coal).3 Electric cars are certainly better for the climate in the United States.

This is bad. Let your friends and family know that EVs are good, actually

My Mastodon server, cyberplace.social, has received a legal threat in an attempt to have a user's thread deleted. It is styled as a cease and desist.

I have published the email here:

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@NBAnthony2k fingers crossed. Of course I'll do my absolute best to keep the instance up, but legal issues are probably the most likely way things could go wrong

I've got enough money and pettiness to at least consult a lawyer but not enough to actually go through a lawsuit

  • Higher magnitude stars are dimmer than lower magnitude ones
  • "Giant" and "dwarf" refer to brightness, not size
  • Population 3 stars formed before population 1 stars
  • Stars are given letters depending on their temperature, which are in order OBAFGKM
  • Planetary nebulae have nothing to do with planets

Does any field have worse terminology and units than ?

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@Smoljaguar I'm willing to cut some slack in that case because "planet" isn't a category provided to us by nature in the same way that the brightness of a star is. It's a category that is fundamentally arbitrary

But yeah the naming still sucks

printers are funny because retro tech enthusiasts like to fuck with the most geriatric shit ever but i don't see anybody talking about old printers, let alone with any affection.

i wonder why.

jenbanim,
@jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

@IoI_xD I think the exception that proves the rule is dot-matrix printer enthusiasts like @vkc. It's easy to enjoy something so simple

    Do you guys think Gadot's momentum will continue and become a popular engine within the decade?

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @Mike_the_Cleric I think so. Based on the time I spent with Godot it seems like it has all the necessary ingredients for long term success

    "Easier, cheaper, almost as powerful" is the recipe that made Unity competitive with the likes of Unreal a decade ago and Godot now seems to have the same edge over Unity

    The foundation seems solid, development is quick, the community is active, and game engines are mature technology at this point. Unless something wild happens I expect it to stick around

    jenbanim,
    @jenbanim@mastodo.neoliber.al avatar

    @Mike_the_Cleric I may be a bit idealistic as a FOSS stan though

    Dropped a piece of pasta on the ground so I went to toss it in my compost. It was too wide to fit so I broke it in half. One of the pieces went flying, bounced off something, and hit me just barely above the eye

    That would've been possibly the stupidest way to damage my vision possible and I'm wondering if this was the spirit of Italy trying to take revenge on me for looking up vegan carbonara recipes
