Why, apt. Why can you not update a package if a file you expect to be there is in the file system that you're supposed to install is missing?

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

I have written a script, I kid you not, that runs "apt --fix-broken install" in a loop, parses the error output for missing file errors, touches them, and re-runs until it succeeds.

It's beyond bonkers.

jens,

And, yes, this is because I installed some Python packages system-wide via pip a long time ago.

Consuming news has ceased to be something that can be done passively in order to be informed of the goings-on in the world. You have to watch your emotions closely. What phrase made me feel that way? What about it triggered that emotion? What other phrases were used to a similar - or different - effect? Who benefits from me feeling this way? Stripped of those particular words, what other ways can the events be described in?

Welcome to 2024, where news is a full contact martial art.

@jens An understanding of historical theory helps - or, at least, that part of historical theory that says "all writers are biased - which bias does this particular writer have? And how does that affect what they've written?"

Trains in Germany keep on giving. 1+h late now, with bored kids. There is no compensation you can pay me that is enough.

mcv,

@chris @jens

Germany is increasingly becoming like that. German trains used to be pretty decent, but these days you can pretty much count on delays, chaos and cancelled trains. In most countries it's considered bad if a train is 5 minutes late. In Germany you're lucky if it's only 5.

Went to Switzerland last year, and you've simply got to go through Germany. It was a mess. Did not get to enjoy our first class seats; had 5 transfers and had to stand. Went to Spiel! in Essen in the fall: had to pay 80 euros for a taxi because the train to my ICE connection was cancelled. Still almost missed it because they switched platforms at the last minute. Went to Italy with the Nightjet earlier this year. Nightjet was leaving from Munich, and every connection in a single ticket had only a 10 minute transfer there, which was way too risky. We planned our own route and made sure we were 3 hours early. No delays this time and had plenty of time to eat in Munich. But the return trip was all chaos again.

It is truly surreal how bad the Deutsche Bahn is these days. And the problem is: if I want to go anywhere other than France or Spain, I have to go through Germany.

@mcv @chris It's what 16 years of Merkel has left behind. Her conservative party is significantly more interested in propping up the car industry than providing good transport options.

I love deadlines! I love the sound they make as they inexorably grind closer, and the scream they make when you defeat them at the last possible minute.

slothrop,
@slothrop@chaos.social avatar

@jens You should really learn to be more relaxed about deadlines.

I just sit back and enjoy the fresh breeze they create as they rush past.

@slothrop Ah, but this one was important to me.

In this house, father's day doesn't mean getting drunk with friends. It means spending time with the kids. You know, embracing the dad life.

OK, I did get some presents and a nice brunch.

You've heard about the man vs. bear thing. Now for the ultimate poll:

Would you rather be trapped in an outhouse in the woods with...

jens,

This relates to the ongoing mystery of whether a bear shits in the woods. There's only one way to know...

I'm gonna half to assume that those folk choosing Rowling here are also lactose intolerant and have packed copious cheese supplies. Otherwise it'd confuse me.

I've been catching up with some games I buy for the kids, and recently played Planet of Lana and Gris on the switch. Both show an interesting trend, in that they're very beautiful games, but strangely empty.

I notice this in particular with the first, because it reminds me a lot in how the character steers of @jmechner 's Prince of Persia, or Flashback. And compared to either of these games, there is very little going on in each screen in terms of obstacles or puzzles.

And then there are...

Theriac,

I think you might like it - it's an rpg but in the same vein as the games you described part art, part experience.

jens,
@jens@social.finkhaeuser.de avatar

@Theriac Hmm. I do also like the crunchiness of the older games, though.

I'll check it out, thank you!

Not so long ago, I finished parking about 900 computing related papers, books and magazines in my paperless instance. I felt like I'd finally finished the annoying work of fixing titles and tagging stuff.

Then I remembered the ca. 400 RPG related PDFs.
