Scotland is a separate country in name only.

Can I ask how much research you have done to arrive at this conclusion?
How much time have you spent living in Scotland?
How aware are you of the culture, languages and literature of Scotland? Can you name any authors? Can you speak any of the languages? Do you know why it was decided not to put the dissolution of the Scottish parliament to a public vote?
How much do you understand of the meaning of the phrase "the Cringe"?

Regarding the 2014 vote - how well do you understand the UK media? Were you in Scotland in the run up to Indie Ref?

Tell you what how about I post a link for a panel program that aired a couple of years before the 1979 Devolution bill, broadcast nationally and while you watch it ask yourself why there was no such broadcast for Indie Ref. Why weren't Scots allowed to discuss their issues in such a frank manner? Oh and incidentally it was a Labour Government that put the boot into the Devolution Bill.

@AnthonyFStevens @CloudyMrs @Wen @soren

The answer is the media. No voice is given on the UK media that doesn't push a unionist agenda and it has been that way since the run up to Indie Ref.

If you watch the panel program I linked - there is a Tory/Labour/SNP panel with a studio audience comprising of Tory hopefuls, trades unionists all talking about what a devolved Scotland should be like on national tv. I can't stress that last part enough. It wasn't hidden away on a regional channel bracketed by "whinging scots complaining, again.", it wasn't stacked with pro Unionists.

South of the border, no one cares about Scottish Independence or a united Ireland.

You missed out Wales btw.

Here you sort of hit the nail on the head. Extrapolate this and you'll get why we don't want to engage in the Westminster Game.

To put it in more specific terms - what we want, no Westminster party is offering because they only view our votes as bums on seats in Westminster and we need to shut the fuck up about our pressing issues because nobody cares.

Who wants to buy into that mentality?

Theriac,
@Theriac@plasmatrap.com avatar

@AnthonyFStevens @Wen @CloudyMrs @soren

What is it you do you think then, in the face of all the disinterest, that makes Independence an issue that the Labour party has a policy on? That the local branch is given no autonomy?

You would think, given the part that Scots played in the creation of the Labour party, that it would be in their interests to re-engage with voters.

Liberals don't do well in Scotland for historical reasons.

Labour are in the same position the Liberals were in prior to the 1922 general election. Scotland had been staunchly Liberal but they lost ground the grassroots organisations that eventually coalesced into Labour, pushing for emaciaption, workers rights and "Home Rule" but you would know at least the historic part of this I imagine.

Labour was us giving the Westminster system a chance to prove it could do better, hence so many Scots were active.

Around about 1979 on wards, for various reasons which are probably well enough known, we got a bit tired of the whole Westminster charabang.

Tony Blair, to engage with us offered the Scottish parliament 2.0, he is a ghoul but he at least knew how to read opinion polls .

Starmer is so transparent. He wants bums on seats in Westminster and we have votes.

Yet he's tone deaf, wrapping himself in symbols of English and Westminster nationalism, professing admiration for Thatcher.

This level of tone deafness is how Winnie lost the Liberals "safest seat" in 1922.

Independence is across the political spectrum.

Hope this answers your question.

We go the way of Singapore or the Basque territories where we self-declare as a nation state. I specifically cite 2 examples where one got international support and one didn't to underline the risks of this approach.

Another option is to worry less about what Westminster says and carry on building the society we want to live in, this is what has been happening, and we do civil disobedience so well as a country.

Personally I see Brexit Westminster as the millstone around N. Ireland, Wales and Scotland's collective necks. I can't speak for England as it currently seems very confused as to what it wants, but I would be interested to see what would happen if N. Irleand, Wales and Scotland all jointly applied to the EU, if only just to put the willies up Westminster.

Isn't that where we got Labour from?🙂

There is definitely room for something new that isn't one of the 2 parties that have been around for centuries in one form or another and the other one.
But at this point the dark money flowing into Westminster is what's driving everything, until politicans stop paying lip service to the electorate but taking policy decisions from the highest bidder, things aren't going to change.

The current Tories are so bad at hiding corruption and venality it looks like they've given up trying.
But lets not forget Cameron's "broken Britain" schtick - a blame shifting attempt to frame the 2011 riots as chavs dragging us all down, the hypocrisy of the wealthy stealing and selling the family silver chiding da yuf for stealing trainers and plasma tvs, very well encapsulated in Plan B's Ill Manors.

Regardless of how you feel about the music, the video shows juxtaposes the framing of violence in a very astute and nuanced way.

Fun fact: England is the only country in the world to have fully privatised its water and sewerage systems.

Via the Financial Times: "Scotland—which has its own state-owned water company—massively outperformed its neighbours with water standards similar to much of Scandinavia."
