It's here!

"Publish and run Python and R scripts on Posit Connect"

https://docs.posit.co/connect/news/#posit-connect-2024.04.0

Before, if you wanted an R script on Connect (for example, to take advantage of Connect's scheduler), you had to publish it as a .Rmd or .qmd file. No longer.

I had no idea at the time how @Posit's conference in 2019 would change my life. Some events are like keyholes that open doors to areas of life you never expected. That is the Posit conference. If you are part of an underrepresented group, apply for a scholarship that includes travel, lodging, and conference costs. Apply by midnight March 22 https://posit.co/blog/posit-conf-2024-announcement/

Hi and friends! Once again will provide opportunity scholarships to individuals worldwide who are members of an underrepresented group so they can attend posit::conf(2024). Apply by March 22nd! More info in the conf announcement here https://posit.co/blog/posit-conf-2024-announcement/

Noticing a pattern in the freelance projects I'm picking up. I'd put them in 2 buckets:

  1. Interactive viz, apps, dashboarding (modern camp)

  2. Building and automating ppt, excel, & pdf reports (old school camp)

Data visualizations live and breathe in different mediums, and I appreciate them all 😊

jeremy_data,
@jeremy_data@fosstodon.org avatar

@tanya_shapiro A big difference is that much of the tech in 1 is open-source, and much in 2 is proprietary and, therefore, difficult to work with, at least in the public sector space. There is so much of 2 in the public sector. I encounter it daily across US gov agencies. This week I met with a stats agency abroad and they were so excited about HTML outputs from R Markdown and Quarto. It gave me hope!

Job opening. I am happy to chat with anyone who has serious interest in customer success, open-source data science, public sector, and @Posit. In fact, you'll be filling my role because I just moved from customer success to sales. https://posit.co/about/careers/

whenever i write "in git, a merge commit has 2 parents", I always get "well, actually..." replies saying that a merge commit can have more than 2 parents.

but have you ever done a merge with more than 2 parents? why? (I haven't!)

@Cmastication @jennybryan @b0rk @gvwilson A frequent struggle of mine is to embrace that a thing can be sufficient even if it's not complete or precise.

Two big things I learned from Michael Lewis’s immensely interesting and unfairly maligned book about Sam Bankman-Fried:

  1. There are ethical consequences to overthinking ethical questions

  2. Quants are no better suited to solving hard modern problems than artists and philosophers

flexdashboard has come to Quarto! I've been waiting so long. I grabbed a small dataset from NOAA about gray whales and whipped up a quick dashboard in Quarto, https://jeremydata.quarto.pub/gray-whale-sightings/. Grab the pre-release of Quarto and give it a shot, https://quarto.org/docs/dashboards/. These are so fun! 😍 🐋

Whenever I explain my at Google into mobile text editing, I'm usually met with blank stares or a slightly hostile "Everyone can edit text on their phones, right? What's the problem?"

Text editing on mobile isn't ok. It's actually much worse than you think, an invisible problem no one appreciates. I wrote this post so you can understand why it's so important.

One form of criticism is obviously true and also not helpful. This form focuses on the fact that today’s lack important features of human intelligence and that humans are in danger of being misled by model outputs. What these criticism rarely if ever address is the fact that human intelligence is often flawed and dangerous. The criticisms, while often true, are not helpful when they simply imply that sticking with human intelligence is the way to avoid harm. That’s laughably false.

jeremy_data,
@jeremy_data@fosstodon.org avatar

@stevensanderson And it gets worse. The fact that some people don't understand LLMs but use them anyway is just more evidence that human intelligence is in need of some kind of assistance from somewhere, even if not from machines.
