University College London shoutout! UCL is unwilling to set up a Mastodon account now, but they say that if there's lots of UCL presence here already it will nudge them in this direction. If you're at UCL or know someone who is, and you're on here, please reply to this to let us know! Current chief plotters: @sellathechemist , me and maybe more)

@helenczerski @sellathechemist Well, worked in UCL for 14 years, now made my way south to the other college by the Thames:-) Hopefully, UCL might encourage to appear here as well!

Agh

The broad direction of this Jon Henley piece in The Guardian about Germany's economic woes is correct, but some details are wide of the mark

It could have done with someone who follows German politics every day checking it before it went out

As I have no clue about and have a background in CS, I am wondering what good books/lectures to read and all other learning material.

What is possible, where are we, what are typical applications.
NVDI, NWDI, SAR etc pp
Assume no prior knowledge and an interest in data.
Happy for advanced stuff with "read later, after you are familiar with concept X,Y,Z"
Do NOT assume knowing stuff like nadir.

I am trying to gather a collection :)

@mwfc There's a bunch of #MOOC and training things from #ESA: -> https://eo4society.esa.int/training-education/massive-open-online-courses-moocs/

Ultimately, it's a super broad area, and it depends on what you're interested in (land? vegetation? atmosphere? ocean? cryosphere?). Can probably give you some more pointers.

jgomezdans,
@jgomezdans@fediscience.org avatar

@mwfc This is a book chapter that goes into the physics behind EO of vegetation: Disney, M. (2016). Remote Sensing of Vegetation: Potentials, Limitations, Developments and Applications. In: Hikosaka, K., Niinemets, Ü., Anten, N. (eds) Canopy Photosynthesis: From Basics to Applications. Advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration, vol 42. Springer, Dordrecht. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-94-017-7291-4_11

@mwfc This is what kills it for academic users. Some years ago, there was talk of federating computational resources across organisations, but never heard back.

jgomezdans,
@jgomezdans@fediscience.org avatar

@mwfc I think that there are things like @openEO_Platform that are a step in that direction. It's still a bit more annoying to use than Planetary Computer, and I'm not sure about long term support and so on.

jgomezdans,
@jgomezdans@fediscience.org avatar

@mwfc My point was that there are ways to federate processing and storage across institutions. Ultimately, someone has to pay for that, and unless some big org (EU, ESA, country X...) supports this, it'll all be like an arcade machine: insert a coin to carry on playing.

jgomezdans,
@jgomezdans@fediscience.org avatar

@mwfc That's what Microsoft's Planetary Computer and Google's EarthEngine have been doing. I personally find it risky to depend on a vendor (Google in particular, Planetary Computer is based on open stuff), and think that similar things should be supported by public investment.

Python 3.7 reached the end of its life today. 🎉

Here are some Python 3.8 features you can now embrace:

• cached_property
• self-documenting f-string expressions
• walrus operator
• positional-only args
• passing dictionaries to reversed()

A few other favorites of mine:

• math.‍prod (like sum, but for multiplication)
• clearing the REPL with globals().clear()... this would break things in Python 3.7!
• argparse's add_argument method has an "extend" action

jgomezdans,
@jgomezdans@fediscience.org avatar

@treyhunner cached_property looks really useful! How comes I never came across it before!!??
