jmcs,

Convective heat transfer wants a word with you.

jmcs,

Even Putin has to use methods more subtle than sending a strike team after his political opponents. Nowadays there are a handful of monarchs that have full legal immunity on paper but I don’t think any of them wants to highlight that they could just outright murder someone with impunity. Trump’s team picking this example as a consequence of their deranged legal theory sounds completely bonkers to me.

jmcs,

He made one look like an accident and tried to blame Czechia for the other. It’s a bit different than claiming publicly that he has the right to kill everyone he wants.

jmcs,

Republicans are just betting that Biden won’t just shoot Trump on live TV during the debates, since they know they have no such moral qualms.

Lots of studios use Denovo to try to reduce piracy during the release period of the game, and then remove it when the impact of piracy would be lower. It probably involves everything from managing customers good will to the cost of Denovo over time.

Everyone from the driver to whoever certified the car as road worthy to Elon Musk should be held responsible. In reality I would be surprised if anyone except the driver will even see the inside of the court.

jmcs,

You have no idea. I once did an open source library that became somewhat popular and shit like that made me give it away to a consulting company that will happily attach a quote to the bullshit requests.

As in my case it was a library I also got the university students demanding I do their homework for them, which is another delightful group.

And letters. If you go to the stasi museum in Berlin they have the letter opening equipment as proof of how despicable they were.

jmcs,

One of the effects of capitalism is that people are conditioned to think as growth in quantity is the end goal of all human activity.

This makes it harder to realize that, as far as the Fediverse is concerned, at very least, Lemmy and Mastodon have achieved viable self-sustaining networks and that driving inorganic growth by targeting users in other platforms would reduce the viability of the network because it makes onboarding new users harder. An example of this even inside reddit was when a subreddit got a sudden large influx of new subscribers they invariably lost what made them stand out in the first place.

jmcs,

Capitalism is almost by definition a tool to create hierarchies. You can’t have an anarchy where the entire economic system generates unbalances of power as a core feature.

Besides, they wasted a perfectly good plot twist that Pulaski is actually Thalassa secretly still in Ann Mulhall’s body, and that she changed names to hide the slower aging.

Lemmy.ml: Shouldn't Firefox have a built-in UI to export and import addon data?

Addons have to implement their own ways to backup and import data, it can be very tedious to do so when using multiple or switching profiles. It wouldn’t be possible to just copy and paste profile folders, like from Firefox Nightly to regular Firefox (since the Firefox version is too new), from Firefox to Floorp, or vice versa...

jmcs,

Firefox sync already supports syncing extensions configuration but it needs to be explicitly supported by the extensions.

such as bicycles.

Hold my beer.

On a more serious note, there are some prototype self driving e-bikes, and due to the lower speed and mass they are probably much safer than Tesla’s murderbots.

jmcs,

I don’t see why it wouldn’t apply. Their argument that selling user data to target ads is the only way they can be profitable is literally the same as Facebook’s.

jmcs,

In a healthy workplace your peers are allowed (and should even be incentivized) to give you feedback about your work. Requesting a justification can turn an order into valid constructive feedback. Or it can be the start of an entire circus performance if there’s no actual justification but it would at least try to address the issue.

jmcs,

… except the ones in the public domain.

That’s right, they all live forever in O’Brien’s pattern buffer.

jmcs,

Ok Google/Siri/Alexa what’s consent and why is it important?

There’s a world of difference between women (or men for that matter) engaging in a sexual activity on their own initiative by their own free will and a multinational trying to sexualize athletes against their will to sell more merchandise.

jmcs,

By that argument most jobs are immoral. I don’t understand why consenting to sex work is significantly different from consenting to working on a construction site. You could argue that without economic coercion no one would do such a job because of the negative health consequences and risks.

jmcs,

Make it a prequel and you can avoid most of those issues. Even the expensive setting can be mitigated by padding the episodes with “cheap” cloak and dagger and politics scenes.

jmcs,

Most stories fall into one of a few archetypes at least since the time of the Epic of Gilgamesh.

jmcs,

That’s not why Iran fired the missiles.

jmcs,

It’s like the joke about the invoice charging 0.10$ for a screw and 100$ for knowing which screw to replace.

Coding is easy. Software engineering not so much.
