@jon you might be interested to learn that some local associations around Breil-sur-Roya are trying to draw attention to some of the insanities around ticketing, although they don't mention not being able to buy Italian tickets at all https://nice-cuneo-ventimiglia.blogspot.com/2024/06/plaidoyer-pour-le-maintien-et-le.html

A representative starts talking about the line half way through this clip https://www.bfmtv.com/cote-d-azur/replay-emissions/bonsoir-cote-d-azur/nice-tende-un-plaidoyer-pour-sauver-la-ligne_VN-202406040750.html

Much awaited Deutschlandticket à la française announced: https://www.ecologie.gouv.fr/pass-rail

  • only for 16-26 yos
  • only for TERs and Intercités, no other transport included
  • you have to book a free ticket for each journey you take, even TERs
  • you're only allowed to catch one train from a single station per day (changing trains counts, if you have separate tickets)
  • you're only allowed one ticket per hour per day (!?)
  • €49/mo, July and August only

Not quite as simple as the Deutchslandticket

@jon Don't know if you're aware of this, but the railway line to Pärnu is not very old at all. It was opened in 1971! Previously, it had been 750 mm narrow gauge. They then built a brand new connection from Pärnu into Latvia via Mõisaküla by 1985... which was closed to international traffic in 1992 and these days, doesn't exist at all any more. These are (comparably) brand-new railway lines!

Tallinn-Riga via Pärnu was over 100 km shorter than via Tartu and Valga, too...

@jon or maybe the Director General of DG MOVE of the European Commission came by foldable bicycle and could not get the bicycle rack app to work on their fairphone.

But yeah, the driver probably left to late from the hotel.

@jon with the combination of very specific time and undefined date on year 2030, this reminds me of the old soviet joke that goes bit like "a man goes to the car store to buy a car, he pays for it and gets told, ok, come back in 5 years to collect your new vehicle; he pauses for a moment and asks, morning or evening? the clerk replies, does it matter? and the man says: yes, the washing machine repairman is also due on that day"

@jon #Leipzig has a program where people can sponsor bike loops in their neighbourhood for 330 Euro per loop. They are typically installed on residential roads (replacing public parking lots). We pooled some money in our building and sponsored 8 of them.

Totally agree. @jon It was not easy, but at my city (Sevilla, Spain), the cycling orgs finally convinced the townhall only to allow the installation of this type of bike parking. You can even see in the last page of this document (https://www.urbanismosevilla.org/areas/sostenibilidad-innovacion/sevilla-en-bici/ficheros/pdfs/bicicleteros-propiedad-privada/bases-convocatoria-2018-2019-subvenciones-bicicleteros-con-anexos-incluidos/at_download/file) all the tech specifications to install them

Interesting, what a threat competition has been to the company for decades in 🇫🇮 , but abroad an opportunity...

The official approval of these trains for 🇧🇪 and 🇳🇱 is in, so nothing stands in the way of starting on 15/16 June. For the Amsterdam line, that's right after the month-long detour via (single-track) Venlo.

Sadly this is bollocks

Which countries have fast trains is roughly right, but the numbers are miles off

Or if the numbers are right it must have a peculiar definition of “train” to include no regional trains

In any case: DON’T TRUST THIS

remi,

@jon 100% agreed, I even went so far as to suggest "UI/UX" changes. I have yet to see them implement them… (they probably have millions of those terrible stickers in stock though)

And there are so, so, so many paper cuts like this all over the place at SNCF. It's a nightmare for anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of UX design, and real world experience of seeing those trains in use as a passenger.

@jon I got a bit curious, so I asked. And the answer is that there is not special seat for the driver, but as a driver you get used to it and you have the advantage of being able to see the curves in advance. The heat and noise from the engine rooms is a bigger problem and driving from the other end is much more comfortable.

The answer should appear on https://fråga.tågexperterna.nu soon.

@jon I think all shipping lines share the "haffenhaus" building with the glass facade (photo: top right). I was told by a foot passenger there's a bus stop right at the entrance so that would make sense.

The person, a regular traveler, also told me that on arrival the driver of the shuttle bus (man with van) is usually happy to drop people off at the terminal's train-station instead of the main building.
