Testing something. Would someone be so kind as to reply to this?

I've created a situation for myself where every blog post on my site is connected to my newsletter, so everything I write ends up getting emailed out instantly.

But not every post warrants that. So should I create a new "short article" content type?

Maybe, right?

And then those wouldn't all be emailed out in real time - instead they'd be collected up as a digest or maybe not emailed at all?

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@ben I added a notes section to my website for this reason, because I found myself writing less knowing that every post would be emailed.

Why didn't I see anyone talking about adding (in GUI) support for configuring/disabling JavaScript JIT and WebAssembly in 122? Seems like a killer security feature.

Crafting a page I can auto-reply to sponsorship requests with to save everyone time. Anything I'm missing?

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@nateb this seems like good criteria for technical sponsors, but what if you get a sponsorship offer from a company selling like, coffee, or a chair, etc?

Thus begins my v̶i̶l̶l̶a̶i̶n̶ "self-hosting every conceivable thing I can from now on" arc

A few hours ago I received an email that the Open Collective Foundation is dissolving at the end of this year, with new donations no longer being accepted by mid March.

This is an absolute disaster for our work at @privacyguides, which has been fiscally hosted by OCF for many years now. Now we have to incorporate as an independent 501(c)(3) or find another fiscal host, move to another platform to accept donations, and deal with losing all our current regular donors. I predict a lot of lawyer time in my future.

What a headache 😭

Linux/devops/web question. Are there open alternatives to cloudflare's "tunnel thingy"?

Say that I want to host my website https://samuels.bitar.se on a raspberry pi at home but I don't want to expose my home ip, how would I solve this? I know I can do it with Cloudflare but I don't want to use Cloudflare. Can I setup like an nginx proxy on a VPS and do like an ssh tunnel or something? Or are there other solutions?

I learned abour zrok but I don't know if that will work.

Ideas?

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@samuel I was looking for exactly this the other day and found this project which can be self-hosted on the server side and looks super promising, but I haven’t got around to setting it up myself yet.

Struggling to imagine as a journalist why someone would hear about the death of Nex Benedict and go “you know who I should interview for their opinion on this? The owner of the LibsofTiktok account.” But I guess that is why I’m not employed by the 🙂

No clue what fediverse or mastodon is. I just joined this and would love an explanation!

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@levmech Mastodon is basically just social media, except run by a gigantic community of regular people instead of a single billionaire.

@jonah@neat.computer avatar

I wonder if it makes sense to send /inbox and maybe some other API paths to a separate backend webserver, so if an influx of ActivityPub requests comes in it doesn’t affect the front-facing website for instance users. Haven’t heard of anyone running doing that, anyone think it would make a difference?

Finally finished clawing back all my Mastodon instance media from Wasabi S3 back to my own SSDs 😌

jonah,

@double_a_runi I have a zero-tolerance policy for companies (or anyone really) who lie. So when multiple salespeople told me multiple times over the course of a few months that my pricing would be a certain amount and I wasn’t impacted by upcoming price changes, and then they changed my pricing anyways, that was it. (They apologized for the inconvenience of them lying to me at least lol)

It’s actually a bit more expensive doing it this way, but it’s a matter of principle :)

I love that Mastodon 4.2.8 out this morning turns off open registration on sites that aren’t actively monitored. I wish there were a way to remotely upgrade existing sites to that version.

Uh, worms are still unethical, right? Asking for a friend.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@tek tempted to suggest that instances which haven't been updated in 90 days just get expired from the fediverse, like how Signal handles app updates 😈

Google Pay is Dead, Long Live Google Pay

https://blog.google/products/google-pay/payment-apps-update/

The gist: Android phones come with Google Wallet where you can load up tickets and payment, loyalty, & transit cards to use w/contactless or barcode readers. In the US, you also get the GPay/Google Pay app where you can do peer-to-peer payments and link your bank account(s) to see insights. This was going to be Google’s bank offering before that fell through. They’re shuttering the latter to focus on Wallet.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@cassidy how many times can Google "simplify" their payment apps? Sounds like Wikipedia will need to update their chart again https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Google_payment_apps

Not confusing at all!

It's still crazy to me that Mastodon seems to have decided that the best way to block spam registrations is to get everyone to use perhaps the most annoying/difficult CAPTCHA provider on the planet.

Oh, we are SO back 🥳

Sorry this took longer than expected!! I ran into some trouble with the migration and basically had to redo the whole thing... I hope y'all got up to some fun non-Mastodon things in our absence today, and also are glad to be back here 😎

As always, let me know if you run into any lingering issues. The server might take a little bit to catch up on everything in the fediverse that we missed over the last few hours, so be a bit patient please 😄

Okayyyy, I made a bit of a mistake (saved the database dump to /tmp and subsequently rebooted before restoring the backup).

It's not a huge deal, I just have to redo the database backup (which took a while the first time around), so... mstdn.party is going to be offline a little longer than I hoped 😢
