Okayyyy, I made a bit of a mistake (saved the database dump to /tmp and subsequently rebooted before restoring the backup).

It's not a huge deal, I just have to redo the database backup (which took a while the first time around), so... mstdn.party is going to be offline a little longer than I hoped 😢

    I’m finally getting over Caddyserver’s betrayal and learning to love it again (as everyone else already has lol).     I should've asked this a long time ago but: by default, Mastodon saves logs for a year, right? How do I adjust that?

    @nateb I believe you change IP_RETENTION_PERIOD https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#ip_retention_period

    AFAIK everything else is logged by things other than Mastodon (e.g. Nginx logs), so you’d have to configure log rotation on those separately, but usually those have saner periods like ~14 days on most distros.

    Do native English speakers who did not study Latin at school know what “et al.” means?

    Specifically, is listing an app's developer as “Jane Bloggs, et al.” fine or pretentious/incomprehensible nonsense?

    I am once again begging people to never use ccTLDs (any two-letter TLD) for their domains, unless they both live in that country and are comfortable with that country's laws, regardless of how cool they look 🙏

    ccTLDs are completely unregulated property of their respective governments. They could be entirely hosted on a single server in the basement of some island country’s government building if that country wanted, or — as we've seen today— they could be taken over by someone like the Taliban with no recourse. All other TLDs (although some have odd policies) at least have to meet some minimum standards.

    Skiff Privacy has been acquired, will be shutting down

    Skiff has “joined” (read: been acquired) by Notion.

    Skiff privacy is (was?) an and friendly product suite, featuring email, pages, drive and calendar.

    According to their blog post and an email mirror that blog post, Skiff will be “sunsetting” in the next 6 months. In plainspeak, in about 6 months (no definitive date as of writing this post) Skiff’s services will no longer work. Users will not be automatically migrated to Notion.

    Users must migrate/download their data, including migrating skiff domains and redirecting emails. From what I currently understand, email aliases must be handled by hand - so the redirect only works for the primary address.
