Has anyone with an Apple Vision Pro confirmed whether it has Lockdown Mode yet?

tootctl media remove-orphans
... 1 day later ...
Removed 391249 orphans (approx. 127 GB)

This doesn't seem right... any know how/why orphaned media could've built up to this degree? This reduced my storage in Wasabi to 1/10th of what it was before.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@shanie my content cache retention period isn't set at all.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@shanie hmm... maybe that means the regular media deletion process is timing out when deleting things in S3, so they're marked as deleted in the database but not actually deleted in storage? 🤔

Although, I'm not really sure why it'd be timing out, and I don't see any logs indicating that's happening...

Maybe I'll increase the timeout like they did and check back in a month to see if the problem returned. thx

🍾 Huge news 🍾

In 2024, we will be migrating from the Oxen Network to the Session Network.

This will add clarity and transparency to our ecosystem, massively simplify running a Session server, and eventually enable new functionality.

📢 This change will not impact the security of Session users 📢

It's a change designed to make the network stronger and more scaleable, and to improve the experience of network operators.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@session another non-private coin, just what the world needs lol

did you consider allowing network operators without cryptocurrency at all?

skyfaller, to bluesky
@skyfaller@jawns.club avatar

Is open source? I saw the announcement a while back that they open sourced the clients: https://news.itsfoss.com/bluesky-social-open-source/

But what about server software etc.? Could you actually run your own copy of Bluesky without any proprietary software at this time?

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@skyfaller last I looked it was open source but highly reliant on AWS APIs, not something you could easily host on your own metal without significant modifications to the code. That was a little while ago though, not sure if that's changed recently (but I doubt it).

Plus even if you do host it (I know there's at least 1 alternative server already out there) there's still no federation between servers yet.

Can someone who understands activity pub fill me in on the whole Threads posting to Mastodon thing? Mosseri (IG CEO) said that soon Threads users would be able to post to Mastodon. Will I be able to cross post my Threads posts to this Mastodon profile? Or do I have to set up a second Mostodon profile for my Threads cross posts? I'm confused how this whole thing will work

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@taylorlorenz your Threads account will just show up in Mastodon like any other account. You could boost your Threads posts from this account if you wanted, but everyone will see both a @taylorlorenz and a @taylorlorenz account on here once Threads adds AP support.

Question for the community who's smarter than me: I need a WordPress hosting provider who's reasonably privacy friendly and user-friendly. I have a few some candidates in mind but I want to get more feedback before I decide. I'm not looking for "super hardcore anonymous bulletproof," more just like "not an absolute fucking travesty but also reasonably priced and doesn't require CLI."

Any suggestions?

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@nateb how about https://www.pikapods.com you can sign up without a payment method and get $5 trial credit to test it out.

Interesting new filled in square icon in the v4.3.0 alpha when you boost a post.

I just realized that's probably for colorblind people using the web interface, what a neat feature 😄

The same icon gray and not filled in when not selected.

I’m watching a show on Amazon Prime and they start playing an ad right in the middle of it, WTF?

If this is the new norm for streaming they’re not giving me a lot of options here 🏴‍☠️

jonah,

@EllenJS ugh, I suppose Bezos will be getting another $36 a year from me. I don't want them to cancel the Prime-exclusive shows I watch after all.

Got a NAS recently, still getting the thing set up in my spare time, but it's neat so far. One thing I'm a little baffled by though: no full-disk encryption! This seems like a pretty basic feature in 2024, very surprised that they don't have it. In fact, I bought one of the "budget" models and it seems like there's no native option to encrypt folders at all.

The Kids Online Safety Act just won't go away. If you live in the US, make sure your lawmaker is opposed to KOSA (and ask them to pass some real federal privacy laws while you're at it).

Okay, I have too many of these stickers. If you want one now's your chance:

There's a small price to cover a stamp for shipping and the rest will be donated to @privacyguides, but if you really want these and can't pay, DM me for a 100% off code 😄

jonah, to apple
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

You can tell Apple is absolutely FURIOUS about the DMA from their latest press release. My favorite quote is: "EU users will be confronted with a list of default browsers before they have the opportunity to understand the options available to them. The screen also interrupts EU users’ experience the first time they open Safari intending to navigate to a webpage."

That's a heck of a way to say that EU users will be asked to choose their favorite browser!

https://www.jonaharagon.com/posts/apple-is-incredibly-salty-about-the-digital-markets-act/

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@pomCountyIrregs I think the main difference is that everyone knows what a web browser is already (as opposed to a "Mastodon server"), but might not know how to set up a different one on iOS (which itself is a relatively new feature).

The other thing is that it's interrupting users because Apple designed it to interrupt users. Apple could let people choose ahead of time during the standard setup process after updating or when setting up a new phone, instead of right when the user wants to visit a website, for example.

Instead they choose to present you with this choice at the most inconvenient possible time available to them, to maximize the likelihood people will select Safari just to move on.

Apple is the king of dark patterns, after all.

Removed 404 Media from my RSS feed today because quite frankly it's pretty fucking ridiculous that a news outlet that puts orgs on blast for their privacy failings would require an account just to read articles. I don't care if it's free, it's hypocritical (and ironic) and it's obvious they just want my email address.

It was actually on my to-do list to see how much their Patreon cost right when they started doing this.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@nateb I predict this will happen more and more. Monetizing the written web is nearly impossible, leaving publications with basically three options if they want to survive:

  1. Start spamming a bunch of listicles and AI articles about products you should buy, because it's the only way to make money from free written content anymore.
  2. Pivot to video.
  3. [most difficult] Build a large subscriber base with a healthy percentage that pays you for your work.

To be honest after ~2015 I thought only options 1 and 2 would be possible in the long-term, until Substack came around and proved newsletters can work, actually.

Anyways... I'm a fan of the direct-to-email #3 model myself, but if you're not then I suspect the internet is just going to get worse and worse for you as time goes on.

jonah,
@jonah@neat.computer avatar

@nateb what alternative answer would you propose? Because IMO it isn't a simple choice between "walling off content" and "not walling off content," it's a choice between doing what they're doing or not existing at all.

This is especially the case for a new publication like 404 Media, when content discovery and the quality of search engine results are at an all-time low.
