Wow, @calebwoodbine made a script that "upgrades" an existing Fedora Workstation to Fedora Silverblue. Note, this is a one-way operation!

@andypiper I've been working on a spiritual successor. 😀

If you end up with some time I could always use eyeballs from experienced folks, but it's also a complete reboot from how Ubuntu and other traditional desktops are used: https://github.com/ublue-os/bluefin

Been running it like this for a long time and I'm about 60% of where I want to be but moving fast!

jorge,
@jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

@andypiper I'm hoping to have a Framework here pretty soon, how do you like yours?

jorge,
@jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

@andypiper So you think the matte screen is the way to go? I haven't pulled the trigger yet but likely can't wait for the AMD version either so eyeing the 12th gen intel. Everything I've read says fedora works totally fine, any software gotchas you've experienced so far?

I've been kicking around the idea of a "cloud native terminal" for a while now. It comes down to, if I can do 99% of my work in a distrobox why not just be there all the time.

I've been doing custom gnome-terminal configs and stuff for a while but it's time to try to make a terminal where it's just built in, and then just leave the default host terminal there for the system level stuff if I need it:

Boosts appreciated!

I don't recommend listening to me for a full 2h30m, but I had so much fun recording this with Brodie, I hope you check it out! We talk about Ubuntu, Universal Blue, Fedora, and all sorts of stuff!

I drop in some lesser known Ubuntu trivia throughout, let's see how many of them you knew about!

    @sgirlprivacy I remove firefox from my bluefin image, if you want a vanilla looking one like that you could always snag the containerfile snippets that do that.

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @sgirlprivacy I'm not sure I understand the question, what do you mean by compiling?

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @sgirlprivacy Like do you just want to remove the browser?

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @sgirlprivacy Yes we're looking for volunteers to help write better documentation, but tldr you need to fork the startingpoint repo to get started and change the private key, that will get it going right away.

    The new package manager from the Homebrew creator, Tea sounds interesting, but that "auto-install" thing looks very risky — I'd rather it prompt me: "would you like to install ..." instead of auto-installing.

    Edit: Hard-nope from me, it's some crypto bullshit. I missed that on the homepage.

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @thisismissem That confused me too, I don't understand why there's web3 stuff on a page about a package manager.

    tunix, to linux

    I've been playing with ublue's isogenerator to see if I can boot a VM off the custom ISO I make out of my startpoint repo at https://github.com/tunix/penguix and finally succeeded. But when I try to boot from it, the download simply never finishes and I can't understand whether it's stalled or something is wrong. 😞

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tunix That download is unfortunately the least reliable step, the progress bar doesn't really move so you have to guess how long it should take your image to DL 😩

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tunix Rebased to your image to check it out! I'm not sure on the log, I think anaconda makes a log during the installation?

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tunix yeah it's working awesome!

    jorge,
    @jorge@hachyderm.io avatar

    @tunix It was pretty fast, but I'm on fiber!

    Here's a real-world problem the Linux desktop can actually help solve.

    It took the repairability movement longer than we hoped but it's here now, and we have that image-based model for distros.

    We can provide a chromebook-like experience but with way more options, flexibility, and better tooling for organizations.

    Put a container runtime on every kid's computer. It will be ignored by 99% of them, but that last 1% is the next generation of open source developers.
