Is there any good Blog post to learn #uBlue customization with relatively limited knowledge about #Docker? I don't like the idea of a distro that I can't customize easily so normal #Silverblue doesn't sound like my favorite choice but uBlue, #VanillaOS and similar approaches sound very tempting and I love the concept of #Atomic distros in general! Also, do you think it's easy enough to learn to imediately switch my main computer over or should I do some more testing in VMs first?
The Fedora Project is taking rpm-ostree and atomic systems to the next level with our bootc community initiative!
The goal is to evolve Fedora Atomic Desktops, Fedora CoreOS, and Fedora IoT to incorporate bootable containers. You will get the benefit of an atomic OS on your computer while unlocking a world of customization through the cloud native development model.
Yesterday at Red Hat Summit @jorge and @cgwalters presented to a full house of Red Hat employees to walk through the state of atomic / image-based Linux and where we can go from here.
Fedora and Red Hat are looking at what we're doing with bootable containers and are interested in carrying that forward!
Hey'all! We're BlueBuild, a FOSS community project focused on making the customization of image-based atomic Linux distributions a breeze. (atomic @fedora, @UniversalBlue
Universal Blue is generally available today! We're out of beta and ready to showcase everything a Linux desktop can be. Our work has been to show how many problems in client Linux are already solved from the cloud native world. We hope you'll join us on this journey!
Bluefin is out of beta as well and ready for you to use! We merged Silverblue with all of the extra goodness you need for a no-fuss desktop experience.
All the codecs and drivers you need already baked in
Ubuntu-like philosophy behind UX design and feel
Grand Touring Support for the scenic route to the latest software
Atomic upgrades and rollbacks
It's the hotrodded Fedora install you always wanted. 😎
Tooted about a #Fedora issue yesterday, in which I couldn't install it at all. I now have, ahem, "screenshots" so hopefully someone smarter than I can point me in the right direction.
I am booting from a 16GB SanDisk Cruzer Blade.
On UEFI, I get a message to say the image is invalid / unsupported.
On BIOS, the installer starts (after a successful self-test) but immediately crashes with a big, scary Python error.
Q: Which is the best gaming Linux distro in the world?
A: The one that works for you. :)
Of course we're very excited about Bazzite and the unique ways it can address problems as a custom image of Fedora Atomic. However, we share lots of packages with other distros like Nobara and ChimeraOS.
this is nowhere near a stable release and most people should look into Sodalite if they want a good Pantheon-on-Fedora-Atomic experience, but
Zeliblue Pantheon is coming together decently, though it's jank af right now because I had to build it off of silverblue-main instead of base-main for reasons, but it...mostly works
one big exception is AppCenter because of PackageKit i think, but Flatpak-only AppCenter is coming in elementary OS 8, so that'll be nice
just tested out the new #uBlue ISO generator stuff with Zeliblue
installation was much quicker than with the old ISOs, and on GNOME we actually get GNOME's Initial Setup for user creation now (haven't tested a KDE Plasma image yet)
so in other words: it feels much like installing vanilla Fedora Silverblue now. but with custom uBlue images instead
As part of the Fedora COSMIC effort that is going on, the lead maintainer of that has spun up a pre-alpha, for-testing-only Fedora COSMIC image that we're hosting. If this excites you, consider contributing to make it an official spin!
