I now have over 10,000 videos on my primary Favorites playlists on #YouTube. When you exceed 5000 videos on a playlist, YouTube unhelpfully just says "Something went wrong." At which point a few minutes ago I created 0-Favorites 3 (many of you will already know why I have the "0-" on there). If you think 10,000 videos is a lot, keep in mind those are just my main Favorites. My YouTube History of all videos watched is, uh, somewhat longer. Yeah.
Long ago in DEC PDP-11/70 days there were disk drives the size of washing machines to provide 80 or 100MB or so of storage. These all had removable disk packs, some had clear glass covers over the disks.
I used to like staring into the top of those while the disks were spinning so rapidly. I occasionally had the uncomfortable thought of what would happen if one of those disks broke loose at that speed. I also was haunted by the concept that one day I'd be removing one of those disks with the work of dozens of people on it and it would break loose from the cover (much like a big cake cover) and shatter on the floor.
Bizarrely, I now get much the same morbid thrill from staring through the top glass cover of my direct drive washing machine, which in spin cycle spins VERY fast and so looks very much like those old disk drives in action.

Funny enough just yesterday we had an unbalanced load in the washer. The lid locks during operation so we were flummoxed as how to proceed. I figured out a procedure to unlock the lid. After much fiddling around with the load (towels) distribution we restarted the spin cycle. It took a while for the spin cycle to reach maximum speed. We dared not walk away until we were convinced the load was now balanced.
@kflanagan@lauren That was an expensive mistake. When the techs had to replace a drive platter we programmers would fight over who got to take it home as a trophy. Those platters were big and beautiful. Quite the conversation piece hanging on a wall.

I was a devoted watcher. Other twisted shows from that short era that I loved were "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and "Fernwood Tonight". Later one there was "The Larry Sanders Show" which I also loved.
On https://admin.social I had a recommended hosting for a VPS but with an affiliate link so people can get some free starting cash plus they support all our services
But I go so many complaints about that that I just removed it all togeter :bloblaugh:
Sooooomeeeetimesssss people can be a little picky on an already free service without any ads
It's not like I force you to use the free credit, feel free to pay as much as you like :blob_aww:
I call bullshit on this chart. 100 million birds dying from crashing into buildings? That works out to 273K birds a day. There would massive amounts of dead birds lying on the ground near buildings.
I haven't been following it very closely but looks like Mastodon's monthly active user count climbed back up to 2.1M over the last couple of weeks. Not far off from our last peak!
@Sampei@antifawarlord It's sad, and a bit rude, to join an instance and at least not join in threads once in a while.
I did have one bad experience once though. I jumped into a thread with a reply once and was disparaged and called a rando. If you don't reply to a thread once in a while it's hard to get noticed.
@Gargron
I hope it keeps growing but 2.1M is tiny compared to other social media sites. I suppose they started out small too.
I think part of the problem for some people who are interested in joining is trouble picking an instance from the thousands that are available. There is a list of instances but probably most people don't know about it.

I remember some time back that New College was rated as one of the best colleges in the nation by U.S. News and World Report in their annual college rankings. Some think it's the best college in Florida. DeSantis doesn't want progressive education. He's trying to force curriculums to what were being used in the 1950s. He's actually trying to get Randy Fine installed as President of FAU. Randy Fine! One of the most despicable politicians and human begins.
“Critics of DeSantis, who is seeking the Republican nomination for president, say he has focused too much effort on divisive cultural issues and not enough on making housing and insurance more affordable. The Legislature has grappled with the issue each of the last two years, including a special session in December.”
