You hear a lot about wind turbines killing birds.

CATS kill many orders of magnitude more birds.

How come we hear about wind turbines killing birds all the time but not about cats doing that?

Witness the power of the fossil fuel companies and the way they are able to spread propaganda

Mina,

@dcjohnson

The bar chart shows numbers of birds killed in Germany by cause:

Wind turbines: 100K
Hunting: 1.2M
Power lines: up to 2.8M
Windows and buildings' glass fronts: at least 18M
Traffic: 70M
Cats: 100M

Birds killed by wind turbines are a non-issue, except if you are a lobbyist for fossil energy.

@Mina @dcjohnson And even that graphic seems to paint a distorted picture.

Housecats are - accordimg to the source - accountable for 20 to 100 million bird deaths.
That is a pretty huge range. The difference alone is the amount of birds killed in traffic...

Lets take the average which would be 60 million. And suddenly traffic is the biggest killer...

@Mina @dcjohnson

"Wind turbines: 100K" Do we believe even this?
Where are all the bodies? Are there well fed foxes living under each on-shore wind turbine?

@Mina @dcjohnson

I call bullshit on this chart. 100 million birds dying from crashing into buildings? That works out to 273K birds a day. There would massive amounts of dead birds lying on the ground near buildings.

Mina,

@jujube

1 every 2 days per square km?

It's not so crazy. Don't forget: It's a densely populated country.

At the one office, I used to work in, we had quite some jump scares from birds crashing against the windows.

Probably not all of them died, or not immediately, but still.

The 70M don't seem too crazy to me.

Do you know what also kills many times more birds? Cars. Strangely enough we never hear of that.

Loss and degradation of natural habitats and direct over exploitation of many species are cited as the key threats to avian biodiversity.

@dcjohnson We hear about people bothered by wind turbine noise, yet super highways don't bother them. Got out of the car on country road and walked right up to a turbine. Can't hear it within 100 meters.

    his was a discussion of how fossil fuel interests divert conversations to things like birds.

    cazabon,

    @dcjohnson

    One of the problems is that cats will tear apart, eat, or hide the remains of birds they kill.

    Turbines drop all their kills in one spot in a neat little pile.

    I'm trying to decide if training the cats to leave their kills in a common pile, or training something else to scatter the ones from the turbines would be easier.

    😜

    @dcjohnson EXACTLY!
    Same goes for : Most get killed by habitat destruction, artificial noise - based desorientation, agricultural chemicals and whatnot.
    Compared to that, the amount of deaths caused by wind turbines is negligible.
    Tho it's easier to collect the carcasses that do get flatlined by blunt force kinetic trauma and heavy disturbances at near-miss distances than say those dying a slow and painful death in some forest or getting clapped by cats when they're exhausted on the ground.

    @dcjohnson OFC the same companies will dismiss the damages caused by their exploitation as well...
