Did MKBHD ruin an AI company and their product because of their negative review of it?

No, the bad AI product ruined itself and its company. Just because someone created a business, found funding and created a thing doesn’t mean they should get instant recognition, and a pass for crappy stuff.

Entrepreneurs aren’t your friends, they aren’t superior, they don’t deserve to be coddled. When they make sht products, they should be told that they made sht. MKBHD did their job.

jvh,

@thelinuxEXP His wasn't the first or last bad review either! All the major tech reviewers and tech journalists on YouTube, podcasts and websites (e.g The Verge, Engadget, Cnet) are saying the same thing so I find it bizarre that Marques is being singled out. Clearly the product doesn't deliver its promise. Simple as that.

GOOD NEWS! I can confidently say: the Pi shortage seems to be wrapping up. Don't buy from scalpers, you won't have to wait long for a re-stock from local resellers.

@rpilocator restocks rising, @Raspberry_Pi store limits lifted!

jvh,

@geerlingguy @rpilocator @Raspberry_Pi woohoo, look at all that stock!!

Thunderbird 115 "Supernova" launches on Monday, July 10th! It's our first step towards a more modern, more beautiful, and more customizable Thunderbird experience.

We think you're going to love it, and we are endlessly grateful for all of your support throughout the years 💙

Thunderbird email software's main email interface in Light Mode, showing 3 columns in a "Vertical" layout with new Cards view enabled. The left column shows various accounts and folders, the middle column shows message previews, threads, in various colors and states. The right column shows the full message with header information

jvh,

@thunderbird this looks really awesome! 👍

Another 5.25" floppy for the BBC Micro just arrived in the post.

This one is the Acornsoft Ltd ELITE Demonstration Disc from 1984, with the warning "Not for loan, hire or resale"

jvh,

@peter how well do those keep? I've got a BBC B+ in the loft with a double floppy drive and floppies all which haven't been used since the 90s I'd guess. The BBC itself in the last few years I replaced the power supply so it makes the right noise when you turn it on but I haven't got round to seeing if I can hook it up to a screen and get it loading things. The loft gets pretty hot in the summer and a bit damp with condensation so I don't know how likely the floppies are to work!

jvh,

@peter hmm yeah I can imagine the belts would perish. Probably be some time before I get round to trying it out but thanks for those tips 😁

What's the best way to follow communities on Lemmy from mastodon?

I tried pressing follow, but that seems to require authorisation from their end.

I've had some interactions with individuals by doing some searching on the original Lemmy side and then searching in mastodon but that's quite a pfaff.

Yes, I could just create a Lemmy account to get the full experience, but I'd rather have federation do most of the heavy lifting if I can.

jvh,

@chrisshaw I'm following a few communities and it seems to work. It's kinda filling my home timeline though so I added then to lists however it turns out you have to follow first on Mastodon in order for the lists to work. So now I just need to figure out if I can filter the home feed somehow. Not sure the app I use has that capability though but it might be something I can set via the web... not sure!

jvh,

@chrisshaw I believe there are filters built into Mastodon but I've yet to investigate what they are and how they work. You're right, I wonder if an app developer could display Lemmy posts a bit differently?

This Apple Vision thing looks like it could be interesting in some use cases, but no one is ever wearing that thing in an office or in public.

Like seriously, it’s just as ridiculous as any other VR headset.

jvh,

@thelinuxEXP they should have teamed up with dyson to make it even more ridiculous 🤣

jvh,

@ADHDefy @bigbox perhaps I should try KDE again, I've been using Gnome for so long now, before that, Xfce. Haven't tried KDE for many years and it didn't seem very polished or have the look and feel but from screenshots, it looks a lot different to back then!

jvh,

@Communist Cool, yeah I just remembered hearing a bit about that on @thelinuxexperiment Actually, thinking about it - I'm currently using Pop!_OS as my daily driver and @system76 have been working on Cosmic DE which looks pretty interesting!

This is Marvin.

Marvin has a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8 GBytes of RAM, a 256 Gbyte SSD, a 512 GByte HDD, fan card, camera, and Unicorn HAT HD. The time being displayed was sent by FTP from a different Pi. I've re-written the Unicorn software library, so that it can display things from more than one source...

jvh,

@Walrus how does pushover compare with pushbullet? I've been using the latter for years for sharing stuff between myself and my wife but also for notifications from picos etc. Seems a lot faster than IFTTT and Telegram, which is important for the doorbell

jvh,

@Walrus good to know of another service if pushbullet disappears! I should time the notifications to know exactly, but it feels like less than 5 seconds, although there is no photo involved. How does yours work, is the pi zero working as the doorbell or is it linked up to an existing doorbell? I'm using a pi pico on our doorbell. However, there are people who knock on the door, or just leave the delivery and don't ring the doorbell at all! So I'm wondering about another pico with motion sensor.

jvh,

@Walrus Ah, using motion detection! I wonder if a pico has the processing power for a camera with a high enough resolution... Pi Zero like you've used might be a better idea. I'd like to try out the motion sensor I have to see how that works though, but that plus a camera might be an interesting combo. Or I might borrow some of your code if you didn't mind if the motion sensor isn't reliable enough 😁

jvh,

@peter @Walrus I wonder if a third party RP2040 board with more RAM would do the trick? The cameras seem more expensive than those available for Pi Zeros though.

jvh,

@peter @Walrus Ah right, memory is on the RP2040 chip itself. I guess it's larger flash memory I've seen listed on 3rd party boards, not RAM.

Either the Mastodon app has the math capabilities of OpenAI, or people really don’t watch my videos on Odysee 😅

jvh,

@thelinuxEXP I watch your vids by tapping on them on mastodon and they load up from tilvids in newpipe 😁

@faisal @protonmail hi! yeah I looked into this further as I was initially quite excited about what looked like a good service and reasonable price but then I realised what they call addresses are aliases (something they should really clarify, why do they even limit those?? they're unlimited elsewhere) and they have no plans that work for a family. Real shame. I'll keep a lookout though in case they do release a family plan.

jvh,

@faisal @protonmail out of interest, does proton mail use something that's interoperable with other services? e.g. if I had a self hosted/on prem e-mail set up and used PGP? Or can you only e-mail with end-to-end encryption with other Proton customers?

KorvaxChris, to random

Alright, I did it. I did something I never, ever thought I would.

...I switched to 😬

jvh,

@KorvaxChris I've been wondering about trying the same. But I'm completely embedded in Google, even though I have been using firefox on computers and mobile for a while now, my domains are on Gmail, docs on Google docs, car nav Google maps, use meet for work etc. etc. Out of interest who do you use for e-mail?

jvh,

@KorvaxChris I didn't realise @protonmail also has drive as well as email and calenders too.

What about photos? I wonder if there is a way to use the proton drive to sync photos to automatically?
