This Apple Vision thing looks like it could be interesting in some use cases, but no one is ever wearing that thing in an office or in public.

Like seriously, it’s just as ridiculous as any other VR headset.

alvinho,

@thelinuxEXP i'd like 2 know watt prompted them 2 spend so much $ developing that project & watt kind of ROI do they expect?

bjoessi,

@thelinuxEXP @alvinho I don't think we can be sure that they expect to have (short term) return on investment for this product. It might be that they do this because they want to show that they are still creating innovative products (not just iterations of old) and it might also be that they use the experience from this enthusiast tier product to release a consumer tier product a few years down the line. Or maybe they think inflation goes crazy and that $3500 isn't as expensive next year 😁

Presi300,

@thelinuxEXP
Looks interesting, but not 3500$ interesting lmao, you can buy a nice car with that money.

sahbak,

@thelinuxEXP guess we'll wait and see

theminimlrblog,

@thelinuxEXP Plot twist: They bring out a Yellow Edition midway through the year. 💰💰💰

lilacTeeth,

@thelinuxEXP apple can normalize a lot of ridiculous things but the vr headset seems too far

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@lilacTeeth Yeah some people are already saying it might replace the smartphone… Not in this current form it won’t. Make it the size of glasses without a tethered battery, and maybe, but we’re super far from that for now…

dieTasse,

@thelinuxEXP Its not very interesting product. No real VR gaming. I don't think this will be comfortable for office work, TV watching. That's why the price, they need the most fanatic fans to pay for these first generation and to have time to find if there is any good use case that would make it desirable for the masses...

gianmarcogg03,

@thelinuxEXP it's the Microsoft HoloLens but 8 years later, ironically the same MSRP. Will probably die in a few years because it's too niche and expensive.

CanadaMan,
@CanadaMan@mastodon.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP right now, having vr for anything other than gaming just seems to bulky to work

arnan,

@thelinuxEXP vr is kinda ridiculous in and of itself if you think about it... It hardly has any practical use outside a few very specific usecases.

ppvolto,

@thelinuxEXP Apple Missed the Target Audience like Microsoft with there first HoloLens

elouboub,

@thelinuxEXP Imagine giving a megacorp more money to lobby our politicians with

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@elouboub Oh come on, there’s no way they’d use that money to influence our society, they’re the « good company »! /s

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thelinuxEXP Did they suggest wearing it in those scenarios? I only watched the product video on their website.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@AngryAnt They showed someone wearing it at the office, and someone wearing it in remote work situations with their families around, plus someone wearing it in a plane, so I guess they’d expect people to wear this thing around other people!

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thelinuxEXP Ah I missed the office shot.

The plane makes sense though. Everyone not working there already looks like a complete troll and overtly hates you - wearing a headset isn’t going to affect that.

thelinuxEXP,
@thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

@AngryAnt Hahaha true, and Inpersonally would prefer sitting next to someone wearing this than someone wearing sweat pants and taking their shoes off in the plane…

WohaoGast,

@thelinuxEXP I'd say it looks more stupid than a regular VR headset. I'd rather be seen wearing a Valve Index so at least people don't see as much of my face.

AngryAnt,
@AngryAnt@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@thelinuxEXP Slapping a display on the front of it was kind of a fun move.

    DaisyLee,
    @DaisyLee@mastodon.social avatar

    @thelinuxEXP I've seen people wear Meta Quests on planes while traveling. So never underestimate people

    jvh,

    @thelinuxEXP they should have teamed up with dyson to make it even more ridiculous 🤣

    penguintech1,

    @thelinuxEXP It will have it's own audience eventually ( mostly Apple fanboys and Youtubers like MKBHD hyping it for them ), but I doubt any free software advocate or privacy conscious person would buy that thing.

    like you said before, "they don't solve any problem", why would I put a VR headset to have an online meeting ( where people don't have legs 😂 ), while I can do it in jitsi

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @penguintech1 Yep. The « the whole room is your office » thing is kinda cool, and watching movies on a giant screen even if you don’t have a TV, that’s cool, but at that price? Hell no.

    neffscape,
    @neffscape@fosstodon.org avatar

    @thelinuxEXP @penguintech1 I like the idea of a bigger screen or multiple screens in my space, but living with a snorkle on my face all day long? No way!An for $3400? Sounds ridiculous to me.

    penguintech1,

    @thelinuxEXP tbh, the only thing I like about it, is it gives more monitors, but at that price I'll just buy a real monitor... :mastodon_oops:

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @penguintech1 Yeah, same here!

    toady,

    @thelinuxEXP expected more :bec_sigh:

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @toady Yeah, what they showed looks decent enough, but it doesn’t really push AR or VR, in software or hardware.

    There’s nothing to really push the general public to these products here.

    AlexS_kx_wx,
    OmarSuarez81,

    @thelinuxEXP Somewhat frustratingly (but also probably for the best experience), Vision Pro requires magnetically attached corrective lenses from Zeiss for users who wear glasses – like me and Tim Cook.

    And US Only

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @OmarSuarez81 And that battery looks proprietary AF

    chrisdoestech,
    @chrisdoestech@fosstodon.org avatar

    @thelinuxEXP if Facebook struggle with their VR at less than half the price and more utility then this will struggle, even given the Cult of Apple

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @chrisdoestech To be fair to Apple, their software looks years ahead of what Meta showed, but yeah, at that price, I doubt it will be making waves except in some niche professional markets.

    chrisdoestech,
    @chrisdoestech@fosstodon.org avatar

    @thelinuxEXP

    Very true but its Apple doing what Apple does best. Style over substance

    @eschguy I don’t think they’re bringing enough new stuff at that price, yeah. Cool, you don’t need controllers, not worth the extra 2700 bucks.

    @thelinuxEXP glasshole 2.0.

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @ryankage It even makes you look worse than Google glass, I know, I used Glass for a full month when we developed an app for it back at my first job 😂

    ryankage,
    @ryankage@mastodon.social avatar

    @thelinuxEXP and people will know you spent over $3499 (after tax) which is insane lol.

    thelinuxEXP,
    @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social avatar

    @ryankage Imagine in France with 20% VAT and the euro conversion rate Apple does here, it will cost more than 4000€ 😂

    ryankage,
    @ryankage@mastodon.social avatar

    @thelinuxEXP i even use an iphone 14 pro. so i'm not against expensive apple products, but i couldn't imagine spending $3499+ and taking that in public. wonder how many people will snatch them off their heads. yikes.
