"On or around May 12, 2024, ARRL was the victim of a sophisticated network attack by a malicious international cyber group. ARRL immediately involved the FBI and engaged with third party experts to investigate.

This serious incident was extensive and categorized by the FBI as “unique,” compromising network devices, servers, cloud-based systems, and PCs...."

Said it elsewhere, but "unique" (and the quotes around it) is an interesting choice of wording...

Slightly related: I downloaded a mobile logging app I saw recommended on here this morning.

The description on the Play Store seemed reasonable in regards to not being privacy invading malware, but the AI generated splash screen gives me some pause.

Jeff Geerling did an interesting project with the raspberry pi 5, to be a set-top box(*), but his parts cost came to $110 which is dangerously close to that of an N100 mini PC. So unless you really want to stay inside the raspberry pi ecosystem, I don't recommend.

This is where I switch to my ham accent and give kudos to @jlewallen for his packet radio node that uses Birdnet to tell you what birds it heard in the last 24 hours.

sigh I really need to come up with a reliable and inexpensive way to power cycle some equipment remotely.

My is up and running but the two software defined radios aren't responding even after rebooting the computer. The computer was involuntarily power cycled twice yesterday when the power went out and when the backup generator transferred the house back to the grid after grid power was restored.

Or maybe the SDRs need to be reseated in their USB ports? 🤔

kc2ihx,
@kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@douglasvb @ai6yr

Hmm, maybe you can rig up a USB cable routed thru a relay board, and a script that uses that to reset the +5V supply line when an issue is detected?

kc2ihx,
@kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@douglasvb @ai6yr

Probably... I was thinking of a little USB-C power switch dongle that came with the RaspberryPi in my shack. It seems to just be a latching switch that goes between the power supply and the RPi to let me switch it off without unplugging it. But that isn't necessarily the same as a device that has data lines connected.

The box with the pi was marked Canakit, this appears to be the product. You might find the same thing elsewhere.

Either I've ordered too many things from DXEngineering, or they've just given me too many stickers. Now- what to do with all of these?

#hamradio

kc2ihx,
@kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@bud_t

Even if you check the box saying you don't want stickers, they still send them!

kc2ihx,
@kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@bud_t

Yeah, but like after three orders from them you have enough to cross from "hey fellow hams, I too appreciate a well organized online ham store" into walking advertisement territory. My water bottle got a small one, the car roof box and my tool chest got a bigger ones, but I don't plan to use more than that.

(And the water bottle and roof box also have N7KOM stickers)

Interesting, saw someone selling rooted grape cuttings at the farmer's market at $30 each. (I have so many in pots in my backyard which I cannot give away, LOL). #gardening #grapes

My grad school roommate would complain about how all farmers markets were ripoffs, and I was always saying he should try going to one other than Boulder's. Not that there aren't other expensive ones, but the prices there were absurd.

(As a farmer market regular where I live now, absolutely. But something about Boulder CO drives the farmers market premium through the roof)

Reading the wikipedia article on microwave ovens and found this sentence in the part describing the frequencies they use:

"The third, centered on 433.92 MHz, is a narrow band that would require expensive equipment to generate sufficient power without creating interference outside the band, and is only available in some countries"

You know what this means? With a big enough amplifier, you could cook your food with a Baofeng.

@kc2ihx@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@kilroy_was_here to be fair, I want to see if I can do EME CW by pointing my old Sharp microwave oven at the moon, after disabling the door lock of course.

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:

  1. Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
  2. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)

(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )

But recipe suggestions:

My guess was also the Shel Silverstein book, sadly.

But also, was curious about the proliferation of Chicken Soup for the Soul books that seemed to be everywhere in the 1990s so ended up on Wikipedia. Apparently the company that publishes them also owns Redbox, the movie rental kiosks??
