When an author uses a transformative agreement to publish without themselves paying an APC, is it appropriate to say "The authors received no financial support for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article"?
If not, what should they say in the funding/sponsorship section?

Important news - for everyone in the US who wants safer healthcare, and especially for who want to follow along as the evidence to guidance to practice cycle happens

CDC has responded to the HICPAC infection control guidelines draft: https://blogs.cdc.gov/safehealthcare/draft-2024-guideline-to-prevent-transmission-of-pathogens-in-healthcare-settings/
HT @luckytran

For background, here's my thread when I live tweeted the fall HICPAC meeting day 1: https://social.esmarconf.org/@kdnyhan/111340872591266896

And day 2: https://social.esmarconf.org/@kdnyhan/111346813321254312

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

After just glancing at the CDC response, I feel better than I did at the end of the day 2 thread.... ✊

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

I can't tell when the next meeting will be - maybe June 6-7 or maybe before?

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

With it doesn't take long to get back to 🤯
I'm reading the précis of a listening session https://www.cdc.gov/hicpac/pdf/2023-October-HICPAC-ListeningSession-508.pdf
On the plus side - airborne and occupational health all stars like Lisa Broadway, Don Milton, Peg Seminarie, among others.
On the minus side, well...

"Dr. Jernigan asked the group whether there are important more general research questions that still need to be answered as soon as possible to address some of the issues raised."
On the one hand, yes! Give big grants to Mike Hoerger and everyone at CIDRAP, yes!!

On the other hand, who can read that without hearing "CDC wants to slow walk airborne protections à la Merchants of Doubt"?

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

And
"Dr. Cohen apologized for having to step away, but noted that she was able to hear all 3 presentations and expressed her appreciation for the group’s thoughts and feedback. She emphasized that she would be learning more as CDC works through this process."

😒how long could these presentations possibly have taken? They are recorded in the minutes in three paragraphs. She had to "step away" from watching but she "was able to hear"?

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

And "she would be learning more" 🤦‍♀️

Ok, yes, lifelong learning is great. Interprofessional collaboration is great too. But maybe, if you become CDC director during an airborne pandemic, maybe you should try to get up to speed about respirators and aerosols? Like, before you hit three months in the job?

(If you have somehow gotten through the first 3.5 years of airborne pandemic PRACTICING MEDICINE without getting a handle on respirators and aerosols SMH)

@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

And - where are the minutes for the Nov 2-3 meeting? I do not see them at https://www.cdc.gov/hicpac/minutes.html

Reading rec:

Khalil, H., Campbell, F., Danial, K., Pollock, D., Munn, Z., Welsh, V., Saran, A., Hoppe, D., & Tricco, A. C. (2024). Advancing the methodology of mapping reviews: A scoping review. Research Synthesis Methods, n/a(n/a). https://doi.org/10.1002/jrsm.1694

I guess the fact that I recognize fewer than half of the documents that mapping review authors cited as relevant methodological guidance means that I need to read the paper ROTFL

Hi, do I know anyone -- or do you want to introduce me to anyone -- who might attend the What Works Solutions Summit in in June?
I'm not interested in traveling (to a climate conference ✈️🤯✈️) but if you are, or are nearby, maybe we could collaborate on an abstract about the relative coverage and value of several bibliographic databases relevant to climate and health.

Hi @medlibs and others up on #EvidenceSynthesis #medlibs #SystematicReviews

I read some PICO Portal documentation yesterday because a library user's friend really likes it, and I have questions. #3 is my top priority. Any insight? Thanks!

Hi , take a look at this paper

Mellifont, D. (2023). A rapid review informing an assessment tool to support the inclusion of lived experience researchers in research. Canadian Journal of Disability Studies, 12(3), 86–109. Retrieved from https://cjds.uwaterloo.ca/index.php/cjds/article/view/1035

They created a "Disability research inclusion of lived experience assessment tool" that I'm going to share with some stakeholders on my campus

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

My attention is caught by the tool item 12, are research findings to be disseminated in accessible and understandable ways that are informed by researchers with disability?

As a librarian, I've never been asked: if I publish in journal X, will my paper be accessible to people who use screenreaders (in HTML and in PDF formats)? Will my paper be surrounded by distracting ads and "value-added website features" on the journal's site? Will the journal support alt text for figures?

kdnyhan,
@kdnyhan@social.esmarconf.org avatar

Still thinking about item 12, are research findings to be disseminated in accessible and understandable ways that are informed by researchers with disability?

Disseminating research at conferences is another place to think about accessibility and inclusion. During the pandemic I've co-authored quite a few conference papers/posters for events that I didn't attend because of the absence of health and safety policies.

PSA: read your author agreement. Or at least save it, so that when you later on ask, "can I do X with my figure?" we have somewhere to start.

@danslerush Hi @medlibs let's do this infographic (scroll up), but for the resources we offer library users.
Actually -- end users are bound to follow the terms of the contract that the institution negotiated and signed, right? But how are they supposed to know what those terms are?
I don't even know what the contracts say, between my employer and Wolters Kluwer, or my employer and Clarivate, or my employer and Elsevier.
