I have a lot to say about , , and my old Linux For Everyone. So those thoughts might be scattered or confined to this thread, but here we go because things need to be said!

First: @sri was dead-on when he described LAS as a family reunion. Such a warmth and feeling of camaraderie to the event. I made new friends, new work connections, and forged some new pathways in my brain thanks to eye-opening talks.

Some of those talks inspired me to take action...

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

...what kind of action? First and foremost, reviving the Linux For Everyone show. It was (and hopefully still is) a good platform for generating discussion and raising awareness about important stuff.

One of those important things is sustainable software. I was blown away by some very sobering statistics about how the smallest in-app activities can impact the environment.

There are so many ripple effects... it's staggering. this topic needs more awareness, more action, more discussion.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

...Think about how often you're talking to people about the advantages of and software. Or at least HEARING about that discussion.

What advantages are mentioned? Privacy? Hell yea. Freedom? Damn right. Price? Most likely? Customization? Yup.

What about having an advantage when it comes to energy consumption? I honestly never hear that. And we need to start screaming that from the mountaintops.

I'm also going to advocate for @thunderbird obtaining eco-certification from Blue Angel, a leading Eco label in Germany. And I have a wonderful friend at @kde who's standing by to help with testing and submission processes!

Shaving those CPU-seconds off transaction time can have a MAJOR impact on the environment when you're talking about millions of users.

So yea... I had a lot to say. Stay tuned, I'll have more. . .

@tylnesh And if the @AsahiLinux project can retain all of that energy efficiency, Apple Silicon will look even more appealing.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@tylnesh Also? Every time I turn on my tower PC now, I feel guilty...

@baldpolnareffart and you’re a data scientist or striving to be, right? It might be very helpful to have someone who can intelligently crunch the numbers (what does the ecological footprint of X result look like expanded out to 1 million people?) or provide useful insights and data.

Let’s keep in touch about this.

I've been taking notes for a new episode of Linux For Everyone. I think it's time.

@MarcReininghaus Thanks for the awesome energy, dude.

FEDORA LINUX 39 is stepping up to the GAME! :fedora: 🎮 :linux:

Release 39 of this top Linux OS will boost something called "vm.max_map_count" - to make Windows-only games further fly on Linux.

The goal is to match the ways of Valve's gaming marvels SteamOS / Steam Deck.

@Linux @fedora Very awesome! But worth mentioning that it's a proposal at this point, not a final goal.

Trying to rank the new shows but gosh have there been many seasons since 2017!!! Here we go:

#1 DIS s1
#2 LOW s3
#3 PRO s1

#4 DIS s3
#5 PIC s1
#6 LOW s2

#7 SNW s1
#8 LOW s1
#9 DIS s4

PIC s2
PIC s3
DIS s2

The gaps mark gaps in quality for me.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@jynersolives I'm flabbergasted that you liked S1 + S2 of Picard more than S3.

killyourfm,

@jynersolives I respect this argument, thanks.

Still looking for my "forever Linux laptop." The one I'll put ALL my stickers on.

At one point I thought it would be the @system76 Oryx Pro but 17-inchers are big and & power hungry.

Then I wanted it to be my Apple M1, but app compatibility (ARM) has me a little concerned.

I need all day battery life, great display, MODEST dedicated GPU or strong integrated GPU.

Should I just do what everyone else has been doing and buy a ? The T-14 looks pretty sweet.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@wiredfire @system76 That's the laptop that the ethical partition of my brain wants.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@pimeys
I was NOT expecting what is effectively a tie when it comes to overall performance. That's encouraging.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@kerfuffle I can understand not liking the keyboard layout. But I will say Thinkpads inarguably have the best keyboard comfort and overall feel.

But maybe in your case, an XPS 13 is worth exploring? The displays on those are incredible.

EDIT: VAT and shipping put a System76 laptop too far out of reach.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@popey Dear lord, that thing is stunning!

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@mdiluz Haha, well I love a concise answer.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@baldpolnareffart Everything about that excites me.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@dflag84 @system76 I am pretty enthusiastic about that thing, but I first heard about their plans in 2019... I can't wait another 4 years!

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@janet Yea, eventually my M1 Air is going to be a KILLER Linux laptop. (And Asahi is coming along nicely, but it's an understandably complex and lengthy project)

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@dflag84 Honestly, no! But now apparently I need to put it back on my radar.

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@dflag84 @system76 OOOOOOOOK, they're printing prototypes and testing various panels, etc. That's serious progress!

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@jerrmo It IS time for an L4E show, man...

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@bashfulrobot @wimpy That means Wimpy AND Popey got the same laptop. That alone is a pretty compelling argument!

killyourfm,
@killyourfm@layer8.space avatar

@wimpy @bashfulrobot Thanks! I have the podcast queued up as well.
