Currently sowing a tiny garden for my field ants. I've kept field ants before and they didn't really thrive. I'm hoping if I can arrange for them to tend a heard of aphids they will be happier.

They colony is about 15 strong, and the queen is lovely shiny and black. They are also very nervous and freak out at every new sound and vibration. Will a box of green plants calm them? We shall see!

Nogmaals een verdere discrepantie tussen ‘studeren’ en ‘slagen voor een examen’. Een samenvatting maken is een cognitief proces en dus studeren. Een samenvatting laten genereren is dat niet. @philipdutre @thebandb is dat trouwens de 10 studenten met de hoogste scores of hebben jullie 'n ander systeem? Misschien hebben de knokkers of de studenten die van het verste komen wel 'n ander soort mentor?
Ga je er hier vanuit dat excellentie al ontketend werd in het SO? Hoe vaak heb je bij die 10 toppers studenten die geen mentor (willen) uitnodigen?

Er zijn twee soorten deadlines: échte deadlines, waar vaak andere processen van afhankelijk zijn; en willekeurige deadlines, die zomaar gekozen werden omdat we nu eenmaal een deadline moesten prikken. Gek genoeg is de eerste soort vaak flexibeler en aanpasbaarder dan de tweede soort.

@philipdutre mja... 't is makkelijker om concrete gevolgen in te schatten en te verschuiven dan om een nieuwe wollige deadline te verzinnen? hier ook wel herkenbaar. Al worden die willekeurige deadlines ook wel vaak feestelijk genegeerd.

Pica is elderly. She is a very little very old lady. She enjoys parquor, screaming, meat piles the size of her head, climbing walls and people, being squeezed, not understanding the concept of personal space, squirming under the covers with anyone foolish enough to let her get under there and eating spiders.

She has been alone (except for meal delivery from a friend) for three days and is composing a short opera in the traditional musical style of her people to perform for us when we get back.

@futurebird how lovely! An opera! Our Gala is more into mixed media interactive art, involving the couch, some bodily fluids, mouse cadavres and lots of contact sport elements. Between performances she's a sweet 4 year old cat, competing with her slam poet sister over the unique bestest sleeping spot in her (our?) house.

Maybe we should:
Own 3 pair of shoes made by properly paid craftsmen. That are repairable by other craftsmen.
& will outlast all 30 of the trash fashion brand shoes despite daily wear over the years.

yeah... I missed the part on owning just one pair. But all have great repair service, have been lasting for years anyway and serve me exactly as they should. Dry feet on motorbike, fully protected while on duty or outdoors in snow and comfortable yet professional at work and in the lab.

@ArtBear Exactly. Also, shoes that are made to last are made by someone who cares about them. Someone has lived in these shoes and would know what users would actually need. My Daytonas are the first motor boots that really keep my feet dry in a storm. The Haix feel comfortable enough to go to sleep with, even after a full day carrying drunken teenagers to the first aid tent + keep my feet dry in the snow.
When someone really put some thought in their product, it makes you want to keep it.

has declared a bed day. Outside, we have "Soiweddr", Alsatian for Sauwetter, or dirty weather. You know, when pigs find enough mud to roll around.🐷 I'll never understand why a dog breed doesn't like but Bilbo mix told me that his ancestors once sat beside the open fire. He told me had always been , who kept twolegs and horses for fun. And I do believe him everything, as a silly twoleg! 😄 So have a comfortable !

@NatureMC Gala is on the same wavelength. 3 years after adoption, she has now started exploring the laps of her hoomans. Turns out they 're pretty comfy for morning (8am-3pm...) yoga. Especially when it's raining outside.

@philipdutre Ik kan het artikel niet lezen maar naast het argument dat ze in de abstract aanhalen (lege aula's - nou ja, dan geef ik les voor minder mensen), heb ik vooral de indruk dat het voor studenten de klemtoon verlegt van "begrijpen" naar "alle info verzamelen". Vervolgens verdrinken ze in al die info. Kapstokken maken, gaatjes invullen,... is essentieel om je de stof eigen te maken en wordt te gemakkelijk over het hoofd gezien met opnames van alles.

@philipdutre exactly. Als ik wil dat m'n studenten thuis iets doen (ook mooi meegenomen voor afstandsleren), dan maak ik daar wel specifiek materiaal voor.
Lockdown-onderwijs is voor sommige lesgevers het zetje geweest dat ze nodig hadden om in dat bad (flippers classroom, kennisclips,...) te duiken. Maar opnames van een 2u durende live les op basis van live interactie zijn daar zelden een meerwaarde voor.
Je (enfin, ik in ieder geval) kan niet voor beiden tegelijk cateren.

Als een topsporter zijn teen bezeert, vindt iedereen het perfect aanvaardbaar dat die 6 maand revalideert en 'langzaam terug wedstrijdritme opbouwt'. Als een gewone werknemer een potentieel levensbedreigende medische ingreep ondergaan heeft, wordt de week nadien verwacht dat ie terug op post is.

Anderzijds: als een werknemer op het werk met haar vinger tussen de draaibank raakt, staat de preventiedienst een week later klaar met nieuwe lockout-systemen, PBM's, werkpostfiches en vorming voor alle gebruikers. Als een wielrenner tijdens een koers in het ravijn stort en sterft, koerst iedereen de volgende dag weer vrolijk verder, a dan niet met 'n zwart bandje.

I’ve been crying nonstop because I’ve had to confront the idea of losing my best friend. She suddenly deteriorated and has a bunch of things. Her age makes it hard to guess what recovery will be. She’s already 14, which far exceeds the lifespan for her breed (typically plagued with chronic health conditions, which she doesn’t have).

This morning she regained some energy (she couldn’t walk yesterday) and started eating again.

When cities invest in good cycling infrastructure and safe cycling, a rapidly increasing share of people use a bicycle for their trips around town. (By now 62% of commuters in Copenhagen.) It's fun, efficient, clean, silent and fast. Car drivers benefit, too, from uncongested roads.

@rahmstorf I wonder... the pictures attached are all acoustic bikes. In Belgium, where I live, I rarely ever see anyone riding them anymore. People sometimes even stare at me as if trying to figure out where the battery is on my 2014 Kona Jake. Are other countries still less electrified than Be?

I emptied most of the chillies from my spice rack plus a few bird’s eye chillies into a Thai salad I made yesterday and it wasn’t anywhere close to how spicy it’s supposed to be. And any Thai food that isn’t life-endangeringly spicy just isn’t food I want to eat.

So I will make my own prik bon because this is unacceptable

As the Thai people who order ‘pet maak maak jing jing’ (Thai spicy, really) from the one place in SF that honors it will say, no pain no life’ (while crying)

@philipdutre is 'n groot bureel, alle toffe mensen van t onderwijsteam bij elkaar, aparte stille vergader-/ werkkamertjes. Maar om rustig te werken, is dat dus niet ideaal. Voor studentenopvolging en laagdrempeligheid daarentegen... Met z'n achten zijn we betrokken bij 60-70% van de vakken: onze studenten blijven maar heel zelden onder onze radar :)
