If Apple starts sending all my fucking search, messages, photos, files, etc. data to Google or OpenAI I'm done with them. They are my compromise platform because I hate adding to the Google/Facebook style data reseller big tech data lakes. I honestly don't know what the alternative will be at that point besides having to hobble my experience with /e/os, LineageOS, whatever, self hosting services, etc. and try to figure out a work around for banking apps. Motherfuckers! This is so enraging. I have a feeling I better start getting my ducks in a row to depart their ecosystem sooner rather than later. #rant#apple#ai#enshitification#BigTechShouldNotExistmacrumors.com/2024/04/26/apple…
@hankg I used to be happy with the hobbled experience you mention but have mistakenly become comfortable with the nice features available from iOS (though a Google Pixel would be similar). Very frustrating.
GrapheneOS seems good and I got banking apps working on it, but haven’t been entirely successful with a smartwatch.
@owntracks I've got a couple of iOS devices connected to an Owntracks server. One readily updates its location and the other doesn't. I've seen discussion of various modes (e.g. "quiet", "significant change") but can't see how to set these within the app. Are you able to offer any suggestions?
My prediction is that Apple will make changes—fixing bugs and/or closing loopholes—that break Beeper Mini. It’s untenable that there’s unsanctioned client software for a messaging platform for which privacy and security are a primary feature.
It’s a very nice app, remarkably clever, and for now works like a charm, but if Apple wanted an iMessage client for Android they’d release an iMessage client for Android. Seems irresponsible for Beeper to charge a subscription for an unsupported service.
I’m surprised the setup process for every new iPhone still asks whether you want to use FaceID with a mask when 99+% of people aren’t wearing face masks any more. There are lots of features that a small percentage of people use, but they don’t get asked in the device setup process.
@NycAuntie@gruber I’m looking to replace my 8+ and will probably choose a Pixel running GrapheneOS. FaceID is far too creepy for me to ever want to use it, no matter how good it is.
I’m waiting to see the Pixel Watch 2 first. What got me using iPhones was the Apple Watch; actually usable, unlike Android Wear of the time.
@gruber@NycAuntie that facial recognition technology has disturbing implications is, I'd guess, widely known. For example, this article has been doing the rounds recently: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/09/09/technology/google-facebook-facial-recognition.html
Personally, having such a camera built into an internet-connected device with a proprietary operating system and then having it watch me during the day is too much. It might be benign, but I'd never know.
My son is learning the electric guitar and needs to decide what kind of guitar player he is. Any recommendations for different guitar (metal?) music he can listen to, to help decide?
@yaxu@satsuma in that case, the guitarists who got me interested a long time ago were Hank Marvin (via The Shadows), Albert King, and Wes Montgomery. Grant Green is another favourite.
Your favorite iPhone Mastodon client (wish I could list more than 4 options in a poll, feel free to reply if your favorite isn't listed, e.g. the official Mastodon client):
