Seriously everyone should just cancel their Prime membership rather than supporting the ongoing streaming wars fuckery. Providing less good service for a constantly-rising price is unacceptable. So much for the invisible hand.

Iโ€™ve spent the last week setting up Plex and Iโ€™m going back to ripping DVDs, Iโ€™m done with this bullshit. Also ๐Ÿดโ€โ˜ ๏ธ

Being compliant with Section 508 and other requirements is the minimum we should be doing to provide modern digital services to people that need them, and that currently face challenges in accessing them. Time to start thinking beyond just being compliant.

@mheadd personally Iโ€™m pretty frustrated that we silo efforts between research, 508, plain language, and limited English proficiency, rather than approaching things holistically.

Iโ€™m struggling to deal with this version of the internet, where hosts are removing people for voluntarily nudity, but not removing nazis.

And a big part of that is because banks & credit card processing companies wonโ€™t allow nudity and sex stuff but are totally ok with hate speech.

From a risk perspective this is asinine - very few people have ever died as a result of naked tits, while weโ€™re watching people be murdered in hate attacks daily.

Everything is fucked and backwards.

I found this piece by Cory Doctorow on the AI bubble interesting, but I worry we're underestimating the amount of chaff that the AI buzz is creating.

The speed at which these tools are able to generate content, which is largely noise, is exponentially outpacing the ability to filter noise. Ironically, many of the companies most heavily invested in developing content-generation tools are also in the search business - although it is not their main business anymore!

We talk a lot about federation of our networks but we're still just in the infancy of that push - we're still looking at microcontent.

The next stage is macrocontent and discovery, which includes search. I don't see many folks talking about that yet.

One of the main reasons I have my Digital Policy website for government is that I spend at least a third of my work time explaining to folks that the permission they have is not the permission they need to do the thing they want to do. (Today is one of those days.) https://digitalpolicy.us/

(Also it's open-source so please contribute back if I've missed key information!)

My amazing friend Jacs Fishburne, who is an incredible artist/model/teacher/generally amazing human, is about $550 short to pay their bills this month. This includes medication for their pup Riley. Please consider buying a print or donating to them!

Email them about purchasing a print of any of the art you see on their site! This one hangs above our dinner table:

It is 100% hilarious but it never occurred for me to mirror my content to until @justin wrote this.
As a reader this makes a lot of sense as I can financially support as many authors as I can with one payment. I wish more writers will consider mirroring their content to Medium so I can help support them.

krusynth,

@liztai @justin I like the idea of their model, but frankly I've been seeing a lot of folks leaving the platform over the last few years, due to Medium shifting to the paid-contributor model where they bring in big names; meanwhile smaller authors are seeing their payouts drop significantly. Pretty much exactly what Spotify has been doing.

Also, they don't pay out to every country, notably writers in India get nothing last I checked.

Personally, I've moved off entirely.

A reminder that Spotify continues to find new ways to not pay smaller artists while simultaneously paying hundreds of millions of dollars to white supremacists like Joe Rogan.

I have technical issues with the Fediverse-as-designed, ActivityPub being a noisy, push-based system that I despise.

But the bigger issue is that Mastodon and its clones continue to fuel the instant-gratification, attention-stealing, all-consuming internet of shit.

A better internet must go back to being slow and thoughtful, less laden with tongue-in-cheek irony and sarcasm and hot-takes.

We must relinquish our obsession on consuming each other's time, so instead we can share time together.

I think I find Instagram the most offensive of social media platforms.

As a sometimes-artist surrounded by artists, I am aware of the painstaking years of perfecting one's craft required to then spend hours to make something amazing.

Instagram has perfected the system of holding your attention on a truly incredible work of art for less than half a second, only to callously swipe your meaty finger across to dismiss it for the next microdose of dopamine.

It's cruelty to creators.

I went to the Museum of Fine Arts here in my new town on Friday, and realized how much my attention span has shortened just over the few years of the pandemic.

It took hours of walking around to force my brain to slow down, observe the fine details, and digest the works rather than gobbling them up whole in a single glance and moving onto the next morsel.

Well Waldo started it, so let's keep it going! For this week's #FridayPlaylist, it's those cold, raining, autumn day songs.

I will admit that I was late to discovering Warpaint, and even later to learning that Shannyn Sossamon was one of the founding members. Heads Up is one of my most frequent go-to albums on days like this.

Every fall when the air turns crisp I always want to listen to this album, Front 242โ€™s 06:21:03:11 Up Evil. Itโ€™s not especially dreary, but it fits the mood so well. Maybe itโ€™s nostalgia, zooming through rural Virginia on cold autumn morningsโ€ฆ

Personally I am excited about a world where consumer tools are powerful enough to make art. They just shot a whole Hollywood movie on $3000 cameras (The Creator on FX3), and I can do with my iPhone what I could have only dreamed of 10 years ago.

Whether an amateur can make cool things with consumer stuff is different from whether enthusiasts and professionals can use consumer stuff as one of the tools. I think we will see different video forms shot in a one-person โ€˜run and gunโ€™ setup.
