Read my short story "The Copper Scarab" in Sunspot Jungle, edited by Bill Campbell

It's my first foray into writing steampunk in an ancient Egyptian setting and is all about the power of matriarchy.

Every dang time I read one of @pluralistic 's blog posts I learn 2 - 5 things that piss me off. Things that are important to know, yet things that are enraging, nonetheless.

Today's Thing 1: "Bing is also the primary source of results on Duckduckgo"

Gaaaaahhhhhhh

https://pluralistic.net/2024/03/05/the-map-is-not-the-territory/#vapor-locksmith

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

Today's Thing 2: That Google Maps results allow scammers to literally hijack a legitimate business listing ON A GODDANG MAP.

I 100% agree with @pluralistic that:

"Try as hard as you'd like, you just can't shop your way out of a monopoly โ€“ that's like trying to recycle your way out of the climate emergency. Systemic problems need systemic solutions โ€“ not individual ones."

Stop wasting your time "boycotting Amazon" and focus on supporting the uprooting of monopolies.

everything about this Automattic (WordPress + Tumblr) deal with OpenAI and Midjourney just fills me with rage. Even moreso because, even without this deal, those companies were defying copyright and scraping things, anyway. It feels like artists, writers, and creators are being stomped into the mud while others do what they want.

@FlipboardCS @Flipboard any updates on rss?

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

@JsonCulverhouse @FlipboardCS @Flipboard oh sure! I had posted at those accounts about this before, but that was awhile ago and I'm a tiny blip!

I've repeatedly asked and begged Flipboard to please allow users to add RSS feeds in a meaningful way. Not as individual silos (how it was some time ago), but into the main FB magazine/feed/not sure what y'all call it now.

[thread]

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

@JsonCulverhouse @FlipboardCS @Flipboard Back when FB was very new and Google Reader was cancelled (pours one out for the homies), y'all allowed folks to import their RSS feeds in. We had multiple feeds available in one place with posts all together.

Sometime later as the platform evolved, the ability to do that went away. Adding an RSS feed put each one in its own little silo/card, which was VERY annoying.

Then RSS feed adding went away completely, I think?

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

@JsonCulverhouse @FlipboardCS @Flipboard At any rate, it's what's kept me from using FB since the second year of its existence. I couldn't add any new RSS feeds and I didn't want to have to hop into 15 different cards to see all the posts.

FB leaned real hard into offering curated feeds under broad categories or allowing you to look at one publication's stuff individually. I hate that.

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

@JsonCulverhouse @FlipboardCS @Flipboard What I want is to be able to see ALL my RSS feeds in one place with posts jumbled together in reverse chronological order. Then let me add individual posts to my magazine that I create to share with others.

I do not want someone else curating what I see under broad categories because, most of the time, the curators ignore the content and sources I like in favor of stuff everyone already knows about.

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

@JsonCulverhouse @FlipboardCS @Flipboard Does that make sense?

(I have offered previously to hop on video conferencing to explain how all this should work ๐Ÿ˜‚ I have very strong opinions about RSS feed readers.)

For real, though. Saw a clip of the deranged Muskrat saying in a few years we'll have games that are so immersive and realistic they'll be indistinguishable from reality. Then said: "How do we know that hasn't already happened and we're in a game right now?" and I went: Because you'd be dead or in jail.

Elongated probably does think the majority of people in the world are NPCs with no inner life or humanness to them.

@jasonsanford, as always, has a clear explanation of the current WorldCon/Hugo Awards issue/discussion. I very much appreciate him calling out Kevin Standlee on his disingenuousness. Because I'm sure there are many palm-colored people screaming SEE? SEE? WE TOLD YOU! rn even though the problem here is not only with the Chinese government.

How did I know it was high-quality manure and not actual concern for, say, LGBTQ+ attendees or cis women? Because everyone who came into the Jeddah bid channel on the WorldCon Discord server came in to toss the same old and tired accusations or "questions" at the chairperson based on Western media narratives about Saudi in specific or Arabs in general.

They were rude af to the chair from jump. I watched it happen in real time. I heard it was very much the same in the Chengdu channel.

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

And before you jump in to say something like: But the Saudi government killed a journalist and got away with it!!

I would like to remind you that the American government kills migrants, migrant children, refugees, asylum seekers, children in countries we're in conflict with, journalists who accidentally get in the way of bombs and drones, etc etc etc. Governments in general have a habit of doing what they want in the name of Protecting the Homeland...

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

Not to mention how, when this conversation was going on in the Jeddah channel, it was the end of the summer of 2020. You remember that, right? How police in major cities beat and gassed and sometimes killed peaceful protestors protesting about the police murder of an innocent Black man?

Chicago was bidding that year and I didn't see anyone stomp in that channel demanding to know if it would be safe for Black Americans or BIPOC from outside the US to be there.

(5 of ?)

ktempestbradford,
@ktempestbradford@wandering.shop avatar

Even though that's a real concern anywhere in America and certainly in a city where the cops had JUST attacked a peaceful march not that long before.

"But the LGBTQ+ community isn't safe in Saudi!"

IT'S NOT SAFE HERE, EITHER.

And this is just one layer of the many, many layers having to do with how Western fandom acts when a non-white majority or non-European colonial descendant country wants to host a WorldCon.
