@jasonsanford, as always, has a clear explanation of the current WorldCon/Hugo Awards issue/discussion. I very much appreciate him calling out Kevin Standlee on his disingenuousness. Because I'm sure there are many palm-colored people screaming SEE? SEE? WE TOLD YOU! rn even though the problem here is not only with the Chinese government.

In the end, there were many messed up things going on with Chengdu's bid and, subsequently, how Chengdu handled running WorldCon. That doesn't mean the pushback we saw to the bid (esp when it became obvious they were going to win by a mile) wasn't informed by racism and/or xenophobia on many people's parts.

I know this because we saw the same with Saudi Arabia's bid. The bulk of the objections I saw being raised against it were utter horsepucky.

How did I know it was high-quality manure and not actual concern for, say, LGBTQ+ attendees or cis women? Because everyone who came into the Jeddah bid channel on the WorldCon Discord server came in to toss the same old and tired accusations or "questions" at the chairperson based on Western media narratives about Saudi in specific or Arabs in general.

They were rude af to the chair from jump. I watched it happen in real time. I heard it was very much the same in the Chengdu channel.

And before you jump in to say something like: But the Saudi government killed a journalist and got away with it!!

I would like to remind you that the American government kills migrants, migrant children, refugees, asylum seekers, children in countries we're in conflict with, journalists who accidentally get in the way of bombs and drones, etc etc etc. Governments in general have a habit of doing what they want in the name of Protecting the Homeland...

There are several folks who want to leave Substack (if you don't know why, tell me) but are having a hard time finding a replacement. Mostly they're people who have free newsletters they have no desire to monetize.

What are the Newsletter options for people like this? Which services won't charge you based on the number of subscribers or emails you send? Are there any?

@Drbruced @pluralistic Please do! I've been curious about the experience given that the way Jetpack subscriptions worked previously was very clunky. Also, are you on the .com or hosting WP on your own server? There seem to be differences in features.

At some point it will be impossible to buy a new toilet that doesn't come with a monthly subscription to a service that will likely cease to exist long before the toilet needs replacing.

Even before I clicked on the article I had a feeling this would be about Bluestockings. They're the kind of community-focused space that would do this kind of thing. I hope they can resolve this. And I wish people would stop talking out their anger at societal problems on the entities trying to help.

@cstross these neighbors are living in a delusion if they think what Bluestockings is doing is bringing the "bad elements" to the neighborhood. I know that area of town and um... these problems have existed there for decades.

In case you haven't seen it, The Atlantic did a deep dive into Substack's Nazi Problem.

My conclusion?

Substack's CEOs/Owners are, at best, more interested in making money than in keeping literal white supremacists and Nazis off their platform. At worst, the Substack CEOs/Owners are supremacist/Nazi sympathizers.

Either way, Substack directly supports Nazis.
