Train bubble! I posted a list of the 25 most beautiful stations: https://news.fontstand.com/essays/25-fonts-you-didnt-rent/

I like that there’s already a discussion about which ones really are the 25 most beautiful train stations. You don’t love Timișoara? 🤩

This is a combo of personal favourites I visited and some that are universally loved and fitted the international font selection.
I did not visit Madrid, Zhmerynka and Beijing yet.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

And of course I have a runner-up outtakes list!
Might save for future blog posts but in the meantime, do visit Knaresborough, York, Napoli Afragola, Lisbon Oriente, Kaunas, Helsinki, Flinders Street Melbourne and of course

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@jon It’s been lots of years since I visited 😭

@Luke I miss last Lastfm. It was a staple of my 2010 internet experience but I never figured out a good way to track all my erratic listening across lots of devices and apps. And their radio function was so great. Not the same with the video search now.

Despite Josette the cat's best efforts to distract me, version 4 of the South East Europe 2024 plan is now done

Now going to Bijelo Polje rather than Trebinje, and ending in Sarajevo (due to a political meeting there) rather than Beograd

And - all being well - now now taking the Šarganska osmica cross border heritage train too!

Details of the project, and map:

@jon Bijelo Polje❣️

For a moment I confused your rail game posts with your rail travel posts and thought, wow, “go to a political meeting in Sarajevo” – action cards full of loving details

Question to the travelling wise: if I wanted to book a train trip across Europe, what's the best website to play around on to look at my options?
I'm hoping to take a trip in the spring...

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@Nikkileah For play use the Interrail/Eurail mobile app (website rather clunky) and save potential routes and connections. For actual travel I would consult a website with live updates from the region you travel at that moment. DB app (website clunky) and CD app are great for almost all of Europe. Some Portuguese and Spanish and some timetables in the Baltics are not in any of them though. For “wilder” areas, Google Maps or Rome2Rio to get an idea (too much Flixbus results tho)

Wow, did not know of Roman sans serif monumental lettering. This is a reconstruction of letters dating ca. 100 BC. From this interesting project.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@jhilden Ohhh!!! A digitization of Krasne Pismo! Die schöne Schrift. One of the nicest works on type history, sadly only available in Czech or German. I had always assumed the author was speaking of and showed concepts and storyline, not any concrete old inscriptions at a historical site.

So , do the passes in the sale (specific 10d/2m) still feature 3 in/outbound days? It seems impossible to see this before activating.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@patrick That depends on the country (of residence). Which one are you based in?

Until tomorrow you can buy a Fluo Grand Est TER reduction card for just €10

And get 50% off all your regional train journeys in the Grand Est region during that period

AND you can bring a friend with you on weekends and they too get a reduction

AND BEST OF ALL you can set when your card will start - so I have set it for February 2025…

I’m in Maastricht

There are even fewer trains running in Belgium today than yesterday 😡

But it’s sunny! ☀️

That means 🚲 to Liège and an impromptu to two old cross border tram lines

Then train to Brussels

@jon So not very full in Kanne? (sorry 🙈)

Do any friends have a company in Germany that could hire a junior web developer at the moment? Either as a junior or intern?

I've a friend based in Berlin, Germany, who's desperately in need of work so she can retain health insurance and stay in the country, after her last internship fell short of 6 months (company failed).

If you know of anything, please reach out!

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

Fourth to last train of the day, and the nicest one today – my Interrail pass of summer 23 is coming to an end.
On the traditionally crappy route from Basel to Saarbrücken, it’s the traditional vermicelli pastry, beer and water from Basel SNCF.

With additional tickets and Deutschlandticket, I have been traveling since 22 August. More trips coming up in the next three weeks but then I think I gotta give the Deuter Trail 24 a bit of rest 😑

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

This is the action figure I managed to draw this summer.
Some random learnings: the continuous pass is much more fun than the flexi. I didn’t like that I constantly weighed up if a trip was worth the travel day. The additional tickets I bought probably added up to the difference to the continuous pass.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

Okay just one learning. Everything else was awesome.
Without the extra trips, pass says 16096 km, 117 trains in 11 countries. Will do better again next year.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim I changed places almost every day last year. This year I wanted to take it a bit more slowly and stay for a couple in each place. I think the latter but with the ability to go anywhere all the time – even just theoretically – is my sweet mix.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim Oh yes, I’m with you on the slow and reservation free ones. Except the night trains, I only had to reserve one Frecciarossa (through boring landscape) and pay for one supplement across an alp pass AT–IT. Oh wait one more Italian IC but those are kinda okay. Still trying to avoid any reservations.

@sergiowct @jon That one is so easy to buy on the train though (like all tickets in CZ). I think it was €0,80 or something. Definitely less than 1

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@sergiowct @jon I wish it was easy to buy any ticket on the train but alas totally not. But I get Jon’s point

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@jon @sergiowct Yes I know. And we are primed to frantically search how to buy it online because all train companies push us to buy online. I just wish that you could buy standard price tickets on board everywhere. That should be the default if you don’t know how to figure it out in advance. I rather close all but the major Reisezentren and do away with all ticket machines. That must bring huge savings. And more, helpful staff on trains would be appreciated by everyone.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@jon @sergiowct Same with Scottland where I thought about it all for real. They don’t have any ticket machines at smaller stations, just a sign up that you should buy from the conductor (like what @moritzkraehe suggests). Also takes so much stress from you if you have a tight connection and/or don’t know how the machine or ticket system works.
