While the rest of Europe is wondering how to sell more international rail tickets, SNCF is doing the opposite from 23 May 🙄

@bilginveperk alerted me

Pretty simple international trips like
Paris - Verviers 🇧🇪
Paris - Rastatt 🇩🇪
can no longer be bought!

Paris - Verviers - 24 May nothing
Paris - Rastatt 22 May gives some options
Paris - Rastatt 24 May suggests I go to Lauterbourg close to the border French side

UV on plastic is better at creating letterforms than any artist or interpolation error

Similar effect on an advertisement for … plastic stuff. Very fitting

How very quaint! You get a handwritten train ticket when you book Sail & Rail from Irland to Britain.

Besides that, walking to the port was not a great idea. Unsurprisingly, they make it quite hard for foot passengers who don’t want to take a taxi (and who don’t have a Transport for Ireland travel card). An incredibly car-centric country 🇮🇪

Sign for bike and pedestrians towards the ferry. Irish translation reads Bád Fartha

If you left high school today, what would you go study? What profession/occupation would you want to choose?

No financial or location constraints, but imagine what you would want to gainfully do with this education for a couple of years.

Reposts appreciated!

Sour beer season has officially started – and I need to go to CZ again asap. The Obora supply is dwindling. (Looking forward to to having a wonderful Duna in Latvia next month!)

First order of business in Northern Ireland, very conveniently located across the bus station the ferry shuttle dropped us off.

The passage from Cairnryan was just wonderful! Perfect weather, first sunburn of the year, super smooth, great Stenaline ship, approach to Belfast harbor just 🥰 (only complaint could be that foot passengers have to wait to be bussed off the boat last so it’s a bit of a dragging end. From the whole boat it seemed to be not even 50 of us. What a shame.)

Unexpectedly, the Crown Liquor Saloon where I was planning to go anyway is right across Belfast’s bus station. Early afternoon beer is in order!

The Guardian now has a dedicated European edition, next to their absolutely excellent (global) international edition. Best designed trusted news site, in my opinion, and very, very affordable to support! https://www.theguardian.com/europe

A very insightful and honest report by Dave Foster on designing his/a Venus-like typeface. I especially like how he writes about asking for advice. Not many admit that but rather let design information sound like they are the independent genius who came up with the thing on their own.

Hip hip hurray, we finally have a good digital Venus! https://www.fostertype.com/retail-type/taurus-grotesk

When I was young I rolled my eyes at older people who couldn’t or didn’t want to keep up with tech and all things new. Like why?
I get it now. Between AI stealing all creative work and identities and the continued infrastructure insanities like hyper loops, maglevs, motorways and, um, cars, (not to mention wars, climate and general politics) moving into the woods sounds increasingly attractive.

problems: where should I go 27–31 July with my last remaining days? Trying to avoid any sports events (Olympic, football) and/or huge crowds.
Sound like ?

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@partim I agree! I’m just not sure if I’m ready for the Eurostar hassle (especially on a weekend). And I have to go to the UK in September when tickets were already out of reach when I checked so will probably buy and IR pass again.

I did UK quite intensively the last two years, but only rushed through DK and SE en route to FI. But probably North not so feasible with this few days

@partim Oh right. All of core old Europe is annoying now in July and August 😞

Phones should have a language-agnostic input option where you get to choose supported character sets. It could be combined with a multi-lingual spell check that learns the languages you type in.

I don’t necessarily want to switch to the Icelandic keyboard to type an occasional place name correctly.

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@anuko @jhilden You can switch between your installed keyboard layouts with the globe pictogram. Try switching to the English layout and compare. Each gives you access to a different set of glyphs Apple thought would be wanted by someone using that keyboard layout ¯_(ツ)_/¯

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@anuko @jhilden The special glyphs you get to access this way depend on your keyboard layout/language settings though. I don’t get any options when I use the German or Dutch keyboard layout. A few when switching to the English one. Would be nice to be able to customize this (I guess access to all options would overwhelm the UI too much)

Nett hier? Offenburg, Baden-Württemberg.

Pleasant small city to overnight in when travelling from Paris towards Hamburg and the Echte Norden. Very quiet in the night, was nice to hear the birds sing when falling asleep. Relatively inexpensive Ibis Styles hotel (although I don’t see what the “styles” refers to in this case) (not in pic).

@tml Loudly playing devices really became a cancer on trains. Is that because most don’t have a headphone jack anymore and people don’t carry (charged) Bluetooth ones with them? I really wish there were clear signs that playing stuff loudly is not allowed. Even in the non-silent cars.

Kann das wirklich sein, dass in Tallinn aktuell nur noch drei von fünf Tramlinien fahren und nach Tondi und Lennujaam gar nichts mehr?

kupfers,
@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@kupfers@mastodon.social avatar

@jon I’m already back in DE, sadly. But I miss it terribly! Heavenly weather all week and I absolutely loved all places I visited!
(I feel bad I could’ve make it a train trip there out of time constraints this time around though with too many buses because of my particular location-combo)
