Fascinating first person account by a psychologist who faked data

The scientist: Diederik Stapel. A Dutch social psychologist. He wrote a book explaining the context and how one thing led to another until he was caught. Nick Brown translated it into English. Freely available here:

http://nick.brown.free.fr/stapel

Page 101:

I also became increasingly skilled in the use of techniques that could put a healthy-
looking shine on otherwise mediocre results. If I didn’t get the effect I wanted across all the
different measures I’d used or the questions I’d asked, I would use the ones that did show
that effect. If an effect was present in an experiment, but not strongly enough to be tapped
by all of the types of measurements I’d used, I would make it stronger by combining the measures where the effect seemed to be only partly working. ...

Page 102:

After years of balancing on the outer limits, the gray became darker and darker until
it was black, and I fell off the edge into the abyss. I’d been having trouble with my
experiments for some time. Even with my various “gray” methods for “improving” the data,
I wasn’t able to get the results the way I wanted them. I couldn’t resist the temptation to go wanted it so badly. I wanted to belong, to be part of the action, to score. I really, really wanted to be really, really good. I wanted to be published in the best journals
and speak in the largest room at conferences. I wanted people to hang on my every word
as I headed for coffee or lunch after delivering a lecture. I felt very alone.

p103

I was alone in my tastefully furnished office at the University of Groningen. I’d taken
extra care when closing the door, and made my desk extra tidy. Everything had to be neat
and orderly. No mess. I opened the computer file with the data that I had entered and
changed an unexpected 2 into a 4; then, a little further along, I changed a 3 into a 5. It
didn’t feel right. I looked around me, nervously. The data danced in front of my eyes.
When the results are just not quite what you’d so badly hoped for; when you know that that
hope is based on a thorough analysis of the literature; when this is your third experiment
on this topic and the first two worked great; when you know that there are other people
doing similar research elsewhere who are getting good results; then, surely, you’re entitled
to adjust the results just a little?

@PessoaBrain @NicoleCRust I've migrated to a field in a group that only wants to work in the old style and I am clearly behind other researches in terms of funding opportunities. I don't care, but I see how other researchers can be pressed to and reduce quality.

I’m finding myself more and more bothered by the value incongruence of accounts associated with scientific integrity and science reform movements (personal or organisational) remaining active on the platform holding a vote to bring back Alex Jones.

if it’s important to maintain an account as a matter of historic record, occasionally ‘liking’ some tweet about the weather should be enough.

lf_araujo,
@lf_araujo@mastodon.social avatar

@UlrikeHahn Sorry to piggyback this discussion, for me it comes down to having a social networking platform that resembles Twitter, allows scientific interactions and a bit of social hygiene (moderation). It simply is the case that I find it all here with minimal effort to adapt. Right now I'm happy with the apps and how civilised this environment is.

It's funny how I often feel incredibly uncomfortable here because I can’t really talk about generative AI, OpenAI stuff, innovation etc… because some of the crowd is just toxic about it.
Even on X, you don’t get that kind of people flaming in your mentions because they think they’re on such a high horse.
I can have whatever opinion I want and you need to calm down.
Get over it. Generative AI is here to stay and so many workflow and tools will get improved because of it.

lf_araujo,
@lf_araujo@mastodon.social avatar

@dimillian Noticed this too! Other similar problems here: CW policing, ALT text exclusionists, anti-science activism in some areas of knowledge. I fear mention the areas as I am not ready to enter the discussion again. And of course AI is evil.

How do you quick edit file in from terminal? I have this habit it quick „vim” command - it’s quick. But my neovim config is unmanaged for a few months so it’s broken. So you simply open emacs in terminal (slow boot) or have some nice shortcut to throw the file into an existing client?

lf_araujo,

@RogerBW @mms I also do the -c trick, now what is the advantage of the -nw option? Can you expand on this a little more? Thanks,

@dimillian used most of these back in the day. Also I think the apps for mastodon really matured, each one having it's own style and personality.

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs Saw an ABA post and immediately knew how negative it could get. Yes ABA is the best current practice, not all will benefit, and punitive practices should not be part of it. But all every one ever heard about are the punitive practices in ABA.

is such a rabbit hole. I spent too much time playing with my Android setup with the version and Unexpected Keyboard and it works surprisingly well. I'm going to need to either build myself or use the sourceforge release since fdroid doesn't have gnutls, and likely the termux compatible build as I'll likely need more packages. Eventually I'll try syncing up with my desktop config. I still don't fully understand why the f-droid version is stuck at the Feb build...

Mas a medida que eu envelheço o velho mundo fica cada vez menos atrativo como destino, até para o trabalho é um chore. Hey gang, in my attempt to make the violin plots useful I am trying to overlay the true values of the simulation on the violins. Preferably tiny horizontal lines, but points are ok. This is as far as I got, since the true values have different names (b1,b3) as the simulation values (mrdoc2_b1_hat ...) I cannot overlay one on the other, how to go about it?
