@misc Many engineers already believed this about React/Node, and previously believed it about Rails. It neatly dovetails with the overarching 20-something + VC-driven narrative about the industry that only the latest tech can possibly allow survival.

Differentiating bullying from free speech, disruption, or "leaning in" isn't nuanced. If someone doesn't, it's simply because the bullying is in their interest.

@hryggrbyr Mind sharing where the screencap came from? I have trouble finding a source more specific than "sometime in December."

The next time a hotshot engineer acts like PHP is outdated I'm going to refer to React & Node as tech bubble frameworks and see what they say. 😂

My company is officially walking back any social media integrations in our product and I couldn't be more excited. The turning of a page that needed turning. What a waste that chapter was.

I’ve been using Threads more lately because it seems like skating to where the puck is going, but I remain unconvinced that I want to be where the puck is

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@jonasdowney Having more fun here than I ever did on Twitter tbh. 🤷 I think the puck is headed toward the fediverse, just not at the speed of capitalism. 😅 Might bounce around a bit more first.

MAANG does prestige hiring and orients to their needs: Being web intermediaries. (Search, social, commerce, libraries, hosting, and next: "AI".)

Those engineers show up on HN, SO, and elsewhere to demo the "right way".

People search how to do X, find the MAANG way, and "they must be doing it right, they have all the money".

Anything that dis-intermediates gets its market purchased & sunset a la Blogger and Google Reader.

If you think you found the next big thing, ask who it truly benefits.

The easiest way to tell if a tech trend has legs is to verify many people care about it despite zero billionaires advocating for it.

My husband got Covid and we followed the CDC guidance (2 completely negative tests 24-hours apart) before un-quarantining. I had symptoms 36 hours later. 🫠 Maybe be a little skeptical of that one, is all I'm saying.

I want to get back into Dr. Who but I fell off during the Matt Smith era; not because of dislike of him or anything. I typically watch shows in bulk and when I don't have the time for it then I end up not watching anything for a long while. So my plan of watching from the beginning with Chris Eccleston is probably a bad idea. I feel like I missed a lot that I would like but now also feel like I have to start from the beginning. 😭

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@hbuchel I really don't think it's a bad idea to go back to Exccleston and start over, I've done it with a friend and enjoyed it. Also perfectly fine to start in with Tenant, though maybe start with ep2 if you don't want a weird transitional start. 😅 I think it's worth it to catch up. The 50th anniversary stuff in particular was extremely gratifying.

Most changes in this world are cyclical, like the swing of a pendulum, rather than a fork in the road. Few people can differentiate a short-term trend from a permanent shift in real-time. If you do, you could move mountains with the gained leverage. Instead, we reward the folks who hype the short-term trends by making them billionaires.

The pendulum swings slowly, but swing it must. Media consolidation may have hit its tail-eating apex. https://www.fastcompany.com/90983739/worker-owned-media-future-defector-aftermath-404

When people say: “COVID is here to stay” it just sounds like people are throwing in the towel? Like, to me it makes as much sense as if people were to look into our water supply and said: “Cholera is here to stay.”

What do they even mean? Just like we can filter water, we can filter air. This is a thing we know how to do, is relatively inexpensive, and if subsidized would likely pay itself back in productivity gains alone. It really shouldn’t be that hard.

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@yosh I regularly have 20-50 person events at my house (it’s old with no HVAC). There’s a HEPPA air filter in every room that are double the capacity required per square foot, and unless every window is open, they run. To date, no Covid transmission in my house. 🤷 Not rocket science.

The best candy bars, in order:

  1. Reese's Take5
  2. Take5
  3. Whatchamacallit
  4. Twix
  5. Two Reese's PB Cups dressed up like a candy bar

However, my 430 trick-or-treaters preferred Sour Patch Kids by a 2-to-1 margin over Reese's Take5 and chose the Starbursts or Crunch bars at an equivalent rate.

Kids. 🤷😂

Mastodon search should have a way to exclude giant ass posts. (or posts with more than a certain number of hashtags)

linc,
@linc@phpc.social avatar

@misc That's always been the tension of the idea there can be "one true platform" and also why it's usually not helpful to connect identities across multiple platforms (except for ad dollars). You show up differently for different people; it's a fundamental human quality. Tech can't override it.
