Civilization is an infinite, cyclical game of one-upmanship between the systems builders and the systems gamers. When people say "late-stage capitalism" I hear "phase in the current cycle where the systems gamers are ahead."
What bothers me is an implicit expectation that letting the system fail is going to work for anyone. People who believe that have never lived through a system failing. You move on by building something new, not waiting.
@BenRiceM Not only is it a better movie, the plot actually makes sense now. I haven’t reshared a link in my community Discord that got more enthusiastic feedback than that one in a while. 😅
goddddamnit it's one thing when a delivery person is in a hurry or whatever & lies & says they tried to deliver but I wasn't home -- I get that.
But the goldang USPS carrier went to the trouble of filling out the coral "sorry we missed you" form, including my name & address & everything, and left it in my mailbox WHEN I WAS SITTING HERE IN MY APARTMENT ALL AFTERNOON.
@hbuchel My impression is that using CSS well requires specialized knowledge, which our industry is actively trying to squelch with the labor arbitrage of "Javascript everywhere" so everyone has the same skillset. Enough folks have drank the Kool Aid on this they have a critical mass and don't understand they're undercutting their own labor by devaluing others' experience.
“Amazon has launched a new ‘one-click to quit the union’ tool, and they’re relentlessly pushing it to every worker in their Coventry warehouse. […] If a worker scans the QR code and clicks the link, Amazon’s software automatically generates a letter from the worker and then emails it to the trade union, ending their membership.”
@ramsey I worked for a company that used GPLv2 with a CLA precisely so they could relicense. It's the "rules for thee, not for me" licensing tactic, used for when startups are concerned about their ability to sell out if all their code is GPL-bound. You basically use your accrued CLA rights to publish a "new" copy that isn't encumbered. I forked a GPLv2 project from that company but I don't have the CLAs so my fork is GPLv2 forever.
@ramsey Basically, you need significant contributions outside the company under the GPL without a CLA for it to "stick" — at least, that's my understanding of prevailing legal theory. I don't think most license strategies have been tested in court because they turn into protracted Google v Oracle messes because suddenly the entire industry cares.
Who will I see at #PHPTek next week? I’m giving a keynote on Thursday, and I’m super nervous. It’s only the second keynote I’ve ever given, and the first one was over 10 years ago. 😬😰 #PHP
Considering that every year we have a new ambitious replacement for #npm in the JavaScript world, @naderman and @seldaek apparently did a very good job when building and maintaining #composer for #php. Thanks a lot to you two and everyone else involved.
@muhdiekuh Agreed! I also like to believe the #PHP ecosystem aged out of the "prove how clever & right you are" phase. 😅 We're all out here like,
"amazing, thank you, now I can work faster" not "huh, bet I can do better, hold my beer".
@ramsey Ah, sorry. I did as well but mine went missing in the upgrade and I had to reinstall. I got the same nonsense message about Software Update but that flow didn't work until after I upgraded the dev tools.
